Course Description: This course examines the principles of performing arts management as it relates to profit and non-profit entities. Emphasis will be placed on the practical and contemporary aspects of the field, including facility management, budgeting, programming, audience development, fundraising, marketing, staffing, and leadership.

2 Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Understand business management concepts as they relate to arts organizations. 2. Understand marketing concepts as they relate to arts organizations. 3. Critically apply course material (to improve thinking, problem solving and decisionmaking). 4. Demonstrate knowledge in these concepts by creating mission statements, budgets, staffing line charts, grant applications and marketing campaigns for fictional arts organizations. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Instructional / Methods / Activities Assessments Weekly RESPONSES to posted questions on the discussion board and/or QUIZZES based on the required readings. Creation of specific ASSIGNMENTS as part of your final project, for example, budgets, staffing line charts, grant applications, sample logos, press releases, ads, and mission statements. A FINAL EXAM to evaluate your knowledge of the course material. A final PROJECT to display your critical application of the material by creation a hypothetical arts organization (e.g. community theatre, dance company, professional theatre company, touring theatrical event, opera, or symphony.) DISCUSSION BOARD: This allows you to engage in critical thinking, to expand the reading assignments and to interact with other students taking this course. Do not just ask a question to be on the board. Make an effective point that enhances the topic for the week. I will post a question that requires your response. You should also reply to your classmate s response. So that requires TWO RESPONSES to get full credit for the discussion board for that week, (one response to the question and one reply to a response.) The purpose of the discussion board is to demonstrate to me that you have not only read the material for the week but also processed it in a way that you can critically comment on the concept. To get full credit for each weekly response, post by midnight Sunday. Grading Grades will represent levels of achievement. Weekly RESPONSES 25 % QUIZZES AND ASSIGNMENTS 25 % FINAL EXAM 25 % FINAL PROJECT 25 % A = % B = % C = % D = % F = 59% or less Extra credit of 5 % will be given for attending TWO productions at TAMC theatre department and writing a review of each show. You must send your review to me as an attachment through ecollege. The review should be between 300 and 400 words. The review must be turned in within THREE DAYS of the date of the performance that you attended. It is important that you write your review as soon as possible so the show is fresh in your mind. Extra credit of 5 % will be given by writing a book review of ONE of the optional textbooks. The review must be between 600 and 800 words and turned in by midnight on December 8 th. If you choose to do the extra credit, please request from me the criteria for the reviews. NO OTHER EXTRA CREDIT IS ACCEPTED. NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED.

3 TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS This is an online class. Students are expected to check their myleo accounts on a regular basis for communications about the course. Students will also need to access ecollege regularly for readings, assignments, power point lectures, discussions and quizzes. Academic dishonesty includes working on non-group projects with others, deception, impersonation, cheating during a test, and plagiarism. These are all offenses that warrant disciplinary action up to, and including, an F in the course. Additionally, any student found guilty of a Breach of Conduct, including Academic Honest, could face the following disciplinary actions imposed by the University: (1) Expulsion from the University. Students may not return to the University. (2) Suspension from the University for a definite or indefinite period of time. (3) Disciplinary probation with or without loss of designated privileges for a specified period of time. The violation of the terms of disciplinary probation or the infraction of any University rules (4) Loss of privileges. a. Denial of the use of an automobile for a designated time (on campus). b.
