2 Library: Book Exhibition Book Exhibition was organized by the Library on January 03, 2017 in the Library premises, from am to 5.00 pm. Faculty visited the exhibition and recommended books for the library. Students also recommended books of their choice for the library collection. Marketing International Research Conference Customer Management to Customer Engagement was the relevant topic for the International Research Conference in Marketing organized by the Marketing Faculty on January 10, Today, Organizations around the world are rushing to engage with their Internal and External customers. Without engagement, the influence of corporate brands will continue to decline and big organizations will lose out in delivering sustainable value. Improved engagement creates business value and strategic differentiation, and technology is enabling a shift from transaction to engagement. The engagement in the business scenario is to be looked as engaging, and the advent of the digital space through internet has opened up seamless opportunities for aligning the various marketing mix which can offer best customer centric offering. Dr. Gautam Trehan, Dr. Jyotinder Kaur Chaddah (for guidance) and Ms. Annie Pillai were organizers of this conference. Parivartan: Managing Innovation in VUCA World. Career Development Cell organized PARIVARTAN a half day symposium featuring Industry Leaders across domains, in the Seminar Hall, on Friday, January 20, 2017 from am to 1.30 pm. Industry leaders like Dr. Kushal Sanghvi, Vice Chairman India and South Asia Icom Global; Mr. Sachin Kamat, Director Employee and Customer Engagement Enrich Salons; Dr. Prasanth Nair, Managing Partner and Country Head InHelm Leadership Solutions and Mr. Aspy Engineer, CEO Integrated Security Solutions Pvt. Ltd (ABAD) interacted with the students and gave the students insights to the corporate world. Page 1

3 2nd INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE GNIMS Business School successfully conducted its 2 nd International Research Conference on the Brand Theme Library: A Temple of Learning and Knowledge, on January 21, The Inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Ajit Singh, Former Director General, GNIMS Business School and the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Bigyan Verma, Director, GNIMS Business School. Dr. Kiran Mangaonkar, Principal, G. N. Khalsa College shared his views about the conference. Highlights of the conference were given by Ms. Kuljeet G. Kahlon, Library Manager, GNIMS Business School. Keynote address was delivered by Dr. M. A. Khan, Registrar, University of Mumbai and the Valedictory address was delivered by Mrs. Vasundhara Deshpande, Librarian, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, Mumbai. Dr Ajit Singh, blessed the conference with his inspiring words. He related the Library with the paradise and its duty of the Librarian to give experience of paradise to the User. He said God has gifted us empty pages in our lives, which we need to fill up with education, knowledge and expertise. Library is the temple of knowledge. To attract users to the Library, librarian has to undertake job of the joker in the circus. Process of learning needs to be changed using different methodology as only Page 2

4 bookish knowledge is not sufficient. Such a conference is the stepping stone for such change. In his welcome address Dr. Bigyan Verma addressed the adieux by giving the example of C. K. Prahalad that by 2020 we need to put emphasize on skills and training i.e. Knowledge Management. He briefed us about the concepts which are very important in today s ICT Era - Knowledge Management and Disruption technologies for the Library. There is paradigm shift in the whole working of the Library due to above things. He also said Libraries should give more stress on Customer Engagement than giving trust on Customer Satisfaction. Change should take place digitally. We have to change a lot digitally, connecting with the Users digitally, using software s, etc. Principal, Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Dr. Kiran Vishnu Mangaonkar addressed the audience highlighting on the reducing reading habits of youngsters. This situation cannot be blamed but need to look forward to inculcate reading habits. Library resources are enriched but student come to library for only exam purpose. Since we know students are tech-savvy, library should connect with them digitally i.e. ICT - Information Communication and Technology. Dr. Magdood Ahmed Khan, Registrar, University of Mumbai delivered his keynote address by stating that the habit of forgetting is good at times so as to unclean and relearn new things. Library should not stick to one phase of traditional way of physical handling they need to change from phase to phase should modernize themselves by application of ICT mobile technology- like e book, journal, IPad etc. Takeaways are how many Users are using the resources available and the response of User, how many people read that book, how many times, journal and e-book through conferences and workshops. Accreditation see the outcome of library s performance and not the recourses of the library. It is need of the Libraries not just to showcase their collection and services but also the usage of these collection and Page 3

5 services should be stressed upon. He stressed that the usage of the Library would become the strength of the Library than just its collection and services. Ms. Kuljeet G. Kahlon, Library Manager, GNIMS Business School gave the highlights of the Library Research Conferences, which were organized by GNIMS till date. Journey of the conferences started in the year 2009 and continued over the years. In 2016, GNIMS library organized the 1 st International Research Conference and this year was the 2 nd International Research Conference. She statistically presented the papers contributed in the conferences with their various demographic features. Dr. H. Anil Kumar, Librarian, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad addressed the audience through Skype. He described the Library as the centre of the temple of the University or college. The main purpose of the library is to share intellectual knowledge, information etc. These intellectual ability is not seen among students, because of which various students remain unemployed. Giving examples from Assocham Reports, which, states that B and C category B schools are producing unemployable pass outs. Declining reading habits are one of the reasons for such a report. There must be a proper balance between print and visual form of library recourses. There is also need of space for students to have conversation etc. He said that there is correlation between reading and academic performance. Good Librarian should work as hybrid between print and non- print technology. There were three technical sessions with different themes like Information Communication and Technology (ICT), Social Media and E-Resources and Best Practices in Library Science. The first session of the conference was on Information Communication and Technology (ICT), which was chaired by Mr. Subhash Athavale, Page 4

6 Librarian, Chandibai Himathmal Mansukhani College and Dr. Sandeep Bhavsar, Librarian, Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, Mumbai. Five papers were presented in this session. Ms. Chaturanga, Librarian, Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA), Colombo, Sri Lanka, presented her Research Paper by explaining about her poverty portal and various links to government as well as research origination. They follow Evidence based data. The challenges are lack of team working and dedicated staff on portal, funding issue extrados in portal. Management emphasize on policy making and not on library. Basically to hold global & regional resources, emphasize need to put on visual formats rather than physical. This requires big team to collect data through field work convert print copies to soft and upload on system. There are no separate Server, SQL is parameter for processing etc. Portal is used for popularizing our portal and awareness of recourses. Portal do not aim at increase funding, from different institution viewing the portal. She discussed the Library status in Sri Lanka and discuss utility of Library Portal as one stop information platform. Dr. P. K. Triparty, Librarian, Regional Institute of Education, Bhopal, spoke about commons learning which is different from traditional library upkeeping. Also elaborated learning commons in collaborative learning environment. There is a need of collaborative teaching where library acts as a good support. Learning commons is the integration of ICT and management which would be a combination of physical and virtual environment where discovery and creativity can be inculcated among students. Commons 2.0 also induces various convections of Wi-Fi, online digital space, technologies (out of class assignments, writing research & group projects).this would also encourage collaboration. This implementation is under progress. This would be a forum to have discussion with teachers, Librarian and peer groups. Challenges are digitalization which is out of read, set up place inside library, arrangement of separate staff, proper maintenance and preparation of Budget. He concluded that in the ICT era Libraries need to collaborate with teachers and students by making use of technology. Page 5

7 Mr. Pradeep Das, Librarian, MIT Art, Design and Technology University, Pune, compared institutions were Knowledge Management taught as subject with Libraries of these institutions. He surveyed how Knowledge Management is practiced more predominantly where it is taught as a subject. There are various Users or research people suggesting various document on Knowledge Management to library. The changes are also found in library i.e., collection on Knowledge Management has increased, also, library hours have been increased. Mr. Rajesh Kumar Das s Library Executive, Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Bidyapeeth, Bengal Foundation, Dhaka, Bangladesh, explained about his research on Mapping Intellectual Structure of Library. In his bibliographic study, he done mapping of Intellectual Structure of Digital Library Initiatives in India. Information, Communication and Technology is spreading all over world. He gave an interesting presentation on Domain knowledge of various keywords used in the research paper and also the author network. The selection criteria is only journal article, author from Indian origin and keywords within for periods of 10 years. Mr. Sachin Vaidya, Librarian, Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science [Autonomous], S. N. D. T. Women s University, Mumbai, spoke about E-learning, types of E- learning, categories and application of E- learning and various tools. E-learning cannot replace the classroom session or face to face teaching session. Videos are available but this can also be complementary and not a proper substitute. E-learning makes our lives easy at any place, anytime. E-learning is just an information communication technology facilitator. E-learning has its consequences on the health of youngsters. Mr. Khushal from Algorhythms, Pune spoke about SLIM21 System for Library Information Management. This system is used by more than 500 Customers, preferred software for all universities. Defiance establishment s corporates, public & state level libraries have been utilizing this software. This is also the age of RFID system where there is self-checking/check out of Library Resources by the Users. There are various modules like cataloguing (database) acquisition (feedback, order, Page 6

8 bill payment etc.), circulation serials control, article indexing, web OPAC and advanced modules like SMS, RFID, etc. Nowadays, Users do not stick to one platform for long period, they change from platform to platform. But there is lack of professionalism in Library due to lack of training, software etc. At the end of the session Mr. Athavale stressed on proactive role of the Libraries and Librarians and Dr. Sandeep Bhavsar stressed on resources and avenues available to the Librarians like Open Sources to cope with the challenges created by ICT. Also concerned about the usage of the Library, explained the concept of Return on Investment (ROI). Also suggested to join various professional forums and online courses to keep abreast with the latest knowledge. Mr. Ranjeet G. Dharmapurikar, Information Scientist, Central Library, Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded and Mr. Rajesh Das, Library Executive, Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Bidyapeeth, Bengal Foundation, Dhaka, Bangladesh chaired the 2 nd Technical Session on Social Media. There were a total of twelve papers lined up for presentation in the second technical session, out of which four papers were presented. The session started with an introduction on Social Media by the Chairperson Mr. Ranjeet Dharmapurkar, who emphasized the advantages of various social platforms if used appropriately. He shared his experience of writing various blogs, papers and also head starting WhatsApp groups where knowledge is shared for professional improvement. Page 7

9 The need of social media platform was highlighted to promote the services offered by the libraries such as Journals, issues, Books, Research Papers etc. to the Users and Professors. Keeping a tap on internet usage by the Users for entertainment (surfing on Facebook, Blogs, WhatsApp, YouTube etc.) purpose, which is restrained, was found to be difficult as library/internet provider cannot continuously track each and every usage. The usage of Social Media for User s entertainment purpose, which nowadays is inevitable, does not serve the main purpose of libraries, which is to provide information. However reading e-newspaper, Informational Blogs, or any source that actually provide information to the User was also considered as entertainment. The first paper was presented by Mr. Rahul Khandare, Librarian, Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel Arts and Science College, Jalgaon, Maharashtra. He discussed the newspaper reading habits of the undergraduate students in Jalgaon. He stated around 68-70% students read newspapers in the library and the most striking finding of the paper was that almost 87% students didn t use newspaper applications. He concluded the most read newspaper is Marathi daily Lokmat. The second paper was presented by R. Perumal, Librarian, J. C. College of Law, Mumbai, on the application and uses of Big Data for Library Professionals. Mr. P Arul Pragasm, Librarian, Shriram Kala Mahila Mahvidyalaya, Amravati, presented the third paper in the session. He also drew attention to the Reading habits of the undergraduate students in Kalyan, Mumbai. His study concluded that the gender differences have a profound effect on the reading habits of students. He also made a point that the visits to the library were mostly for examination purposes and some students used it for entertainment purposes also. The second part drew lot of discussion from the other participants. The last paper for the session was on Dysgraphia by Dr. Abhay Vajpayee, Librarian, Delhi Public School, Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He, as a librarian, has taken the additional responsibility of special kids between the age group of 5-15 years who have hand writing deficiencies to overcome the same by continuous practice. Dr. Abhay Vajpayee showed us how their Page 8

10 library initiated activities to help the Dysgraphia (an abnormality developed in a foetus due to the stress took by a mother in pregnancy). Dysgraphia creates disinterest among children to learn and write. One of symptoms recorded are different gripping capacity and posture of pen/pencil by affected students. Their initiative includes developing habit where kids write daily in school library. The efforts took were appreciated as the activity was improving the handwritings of the students. The initiative cannot be concluded as the sole reason of improvement as external forces such as consultants and psychiatrist/therapist of this concerned problem are being involved for the betterment of the child. He described various innovative methods school librarians can adopt to give therapy to children suffering from Dysgraphia. The session was summarized by Mr. Rajesh Das from Bangladesh. He appreciated the efforts of GNIMS and the organizing committee for providing researchers with a wonderful platform to put forth their ideas and thoughts. He also found the conference very interactive, with lots of discussions on the paper presented. The 3 rd Technical Session on E-Resource and Best Practices in Library Science was chaired by Ms. Sushma Karnik, Library Director, The American Library, U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai and Ms. Chaturangaa Weerasekera, Librarian, Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA), Colombo, Sri Lanka. Only one paper by Dr. Dharmapurikar was presented in this session which was on UGC Infonet s E Shod Sindhu usage in Universities in India. E- books, websites, e-resources consortium for higher education such as ProQuest Online Database, E-Shodh Sindhu etc. are helping libraries and students. E-resources are in demand among students during examinations because students visit library more often then. Mrs. Sushma Karnik spoke on the awareness of the need of marketing of E-Resources. E-Resources should be connected with information need of the User. She also stressed on to have right infrastructure to give accurate service regarding E-Resources. Also, she suggested monthly audit on usage pattern of E-Resources, which is required. Database, apps, journals, issues, research papers, portals, e-books, magazines etc. are only useful and are worth keeping when they serve its purpose, i.e., to guide, provide, share, refer all its knowledgeable and essential content to students, professors, teachers, and those who requires it to put an end Page 9

11 to their quest of searching information. Information should be updated regularly and should refer to new or current activities. Thus old information on e-platforms is not alone sufficient. The Bandwidth, WI-FI speed, uploading and download speed are necessary so that information is shared without wasting the time of the person. Thus monthly audit of the information providing source need to be conducted in order to meet standards set. The webliography happens to be a key tool in providing concise and relevant data than Google. E-books, websites, e-resources consortium for higher education such as ProQuest Online Database, E-Shodh Sindhu etc. are helping libraries and students. E-resources are in demand among students during examinations because students visit library more often then. Marketing of E-resources is another important factor, in order, to generate awareness among Users about the books, articles, question papers etc. Mobile applications, social media are also a way to promote their initiatives and activity of sharing information. Librarians are expected to have leadership, making podcast, video filming etc., skills to enhance their service. Hand on training to the librarians is suggested to collaborate with social media and e-resources. It was concluded that library and librarian s efforts are not redundant as they are most important source of providing information. The skills and all knowledge expected from librarians can never be replaced. Mrs. Vasundhara Deshpande in her valedictory address gave snapshot of the happenings of the Conference also emphasized the important topics which should have discussed in the Conference. Dr. Vidya Hattangadi, Professor, Head - MDP / EMBA, GNIMS Business School shared her views about the Conference. Ms. Neelam Chavan, Librarian, G. N. Khalsa College, Mumbai presented the review of the conference. Page 10

12 Dr. Jyotinder Kaur Chaddah, Associate Professor and Academic coordinator (Parttime), gave the vote of thanks to all the dignitaries as well as the participants who had come from all over the country, including two neighboring countries - Ms. Chaturangaa Weerasekera from Colombo, Srilanka, who had attended last year s International Conference also and Mr. Rajesh Kumar Das from Bangladesh presented their research paper during the conference. She thanked all the people who have contributed to make this International Research Conference a grand success. This conference saw a global response from UEA, USA, Srilanka and Bangladesh, as well as from all over the nation. Total Research Papers received were papers were selected and published in the Conference Proceedings. The Research Papers were published in three different publications - the International Research Conference Proceedings with ISBN No , International e- Journal of Library Science (ISSN No X and Impact Factor 3.216) and Sansmaran Research Journal (ISSN No and Impact Factor 3.678) which were released by the dignitaries. The best paper was awarded to Dr. Abhay Vajpayee, Librarian, Delhi Public School, Indore, Madhya Pradesh on his Research on A Library Research Work Remedy for the victim of Dysgraphia. Participant s felt that the conference was very informative and they gained knowledge about the new technological advancement in the field of Library Science. All the delegates and the participants were awarded certificates. Page 11
