1 COURSE: CIS110 EC Computer Information Systems for Management Fall 2004 (3 credits) MCCC, Parkhouse Hall PH333 / M W 1:30-3:30 p.m. OVERVIEW This course introduces non-computer science majors to the fundamentals of computer hardware, software, and their integration into management information systems. Software covered will include Microsoft Office 2003 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Windows. Additional topics include types of computers and their uses, the evaluation of computer hardware, using the Internet, , networking, software integration and miscellaneous computer related topics. Training will consist of lectures/demonstrations, step-by-step lab exercises from the textbook and student demonstrations. LEARNING GOALS 1. To provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals of computer hardware and software as used in organizations and by individuals. 2. To provide students with experience using Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and the Internet to solve business related problems. 3. To provide students with an introduction to the concerns and issues surrounding the use of computers and management information systems, including ethical concerns. 4. To identify the resources of a computer system including hardware, software, data, personnel, and support. 5. To understand the functions of computer information systems and the equipment required for data input, processing, output, storage and management reporting. 6. To recognize the need to coordinate managerial, financial, personnel, and equipment resources to produce effective information management. 3 ATTENDANCE OTHER You are expected to attend every class. If you miss a class, you are responsible for any work you miss. If you miss more than 6 classes, this may result in a 10 point reduction in the final grade. 2 latenesses = 1 absence. There are no make-ups allowed for missed quiz, presentation or test days. I drop the lowest quiz grade so if you miss a quiz, it will become your dropped grade. Students with disabilities may be eligible for accommodations in this course.
