1 MHRD, GIAN SPONSORED COURSE ON "SLAG DESIGN IN METALLURGICAL PROCESSES (155037B03)" organized on August 2016 at Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science, College of Engineering Pune. Dr.N.B.Dhokey, Course Coordinator and Head of the Dept welcomed the dignitaries and delegates. During inaugural address by Prof B.N.Choudhary, Dy. Director, College of Engineering Pune, he emphasized that GIAN has introduced new path for networking with world renowned academician and urge participant to derive maximum benefit through collaboration on frontier areas of research. Dr. S.T. Vagge, Local Institute coordinator has briefed the perspective plan and philosophy of GIAN. Professor Seshadri Seetharaman, Professor Emeritus, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, addressed the gathering and explained the importance of the course in the Indian context and World in general. 5 Participants There were delegates from Industry, R and d centre and Academics registered for the this program. The detail statistic of the delegates is as follows: Tata Steels (9), TRDDC ( 2), Honganas India ( 3), Kalyani Capenter ( 2), JSW (1), VNIT (1), Aditya Birla Science Centre ( 1), NML (4) IIT Kharagpur ( 2), Students ( 34) and faculty ( 9). Total participation of 69 have been reported. On the last date of course, valedictory function was organized. Feedback of delegates was taken. The certificate of participation was distributed to the participants. Dr Dhokey thanks GIAN. MHRD for sponsoring the course and Dr B B Ahuja, Director, College of Engineering Pune for providing all possible help in the execution of the course. The organizing committee has also extended special thanks to IT team of COEP for Live streaming of this entire course and Dr Vilas Gunjal for his valuables support. Feedback on Course The total duration of the course was 43 hours which amounts to One full-fledged course on Slag Design in academic institute. The participants were invited to give oral as well as written feedback to know their satisfaction index. Participants have expressed their strong desire to have such course for accelerating in-house R and D, for developing new technology and finding new alternative ways for utilization of slag and plant waste like mill scale, blue dust etc. This course has also given us insight on inclusion in curriculum a subject like 5

6 "Phase diagrams" and undertaking collaborative R and D project in Steel, Aluminum and Copper sectors both for technology development and utilization of waste. The participants were very much impressed with way in which discussion was held on binary and ternary diagrams and available software tools for improving fundamental understanding on slag. The case studies pertaining to steel sector especially on recovery of valuable metals from slag or concentrate were also discussed were of great interest to the participants.
