As you will learn when you browse these materials, our online Master s programs are led by full-time Faculty Directors with significant expertise in their respective areas. The Faculty Directors of all three online Master s programs also teach and advise students in our Boston campus programs and look forward to welcoming you into their learning communities. 3 ONLINE LEARNING AT SED Boston University has been at the forefront of online learning since our first online programs launched in Today, BU s Distance Education office works with many schools on campus, including the School of Education, to provide exceptional student support for all of the University s distance learners. SED s model for online learning mixes pre-recorded lectures with live classroom sessions featuring guest speakers and student presentations. Our fully accredited online programs are led by our expert Boston-campus faculty. When you enroll in one of our online programs, you are joining the School of Education and the Boston University community. A: Educators seeking to advance their capacity and effectiveness as outstanding leaders in teaching, supervisory, and curriculum development positions. what will you learn? A: This program focuses on deepening educators knowledge of the most effective ways to present academic content within their field to all of the students they serve. Our online Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching was designed with practicing teachers in mind. We offer seven specialized tracks that will enable you to deepen your pedagogical content knowledge and develop skills that can be applied in the classroom. As an online student, you will complete 36 credits over two years, allowing you to focus on your studies without compromising your current classroom and students. SCOTT SEIDER Faculty Director seider@bu.edu CURRICULUM AND TEACHING Scott Seider is an Associate Professor at Boston University. His research focuses on the civic and character development of adolescents and he has received funding support from the National Academy of Education, Spencer Foundation, Templeton Foundation, and Canadian Institute of Health Research. Dr. Seider has reported on this work in more than 50 academic publications including Character Compass: How Powerful School Culture Can Point Students Toward Success (2012), which won the American Educational Research Association s outstanding book award in moral development and education. Dr. Seider s current work investigates the development of critical consciousness in adolescents attending a diverse set of urban high schools. Prior to joining the Boston University faculty, Dr. Seider worked as an English and literacy teacher in the Boston and Westwood (MA) Public Schools. He currently serves on advisory boards for Character.org, EL (Expeditionary Learning) Education, the Spencer Foundation, and several academic journals. Boston University School of Education has long been a leader in supporting educators continued development of their pedagogical content expertise. 5 HIGHER EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION ONLINE MASTER S 7 FAQs who is this program for? A: Students seeking to begin or advance their careers in college and university administration in roles that include student life, financial aid, admissions, career services, pre-college advisement, development, and alumni relations. what will you learn? A: Students develop a broad foundation in higher education administration, including insight into historical & contemporary perspectives, current issues, governance, and legal issues. Our Higher Education Administration program has been preparing students to start or advance their careers in higher education for over 25 years. Our curriculum of nine courses provides insight into foundational and historical perspectives of higher education, while also reflecting the contemporary higher education landscape by addressing issues impacting colleges and universities today. You will take courses that will prepare you to approach, understand and innovate in the rapidly expanding landscape of higher education. Our faculty are notably active in professional student affairs organizations, which means that you can likely catch them presenting at or attending a conference near you throughout the year. They are engaged in research and practice that pushes the field forward and challenges the way college and university campuses have historically operated. In our online program, you will also have the opportunity to learn from noteworthy guest speakers who bring experience from a vareity of institution types and roles within the higher education sector. DR. RAUL FERNANDEZ Faculty Director raul@bu.edu HIGHER EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION Dr. Raul Fernandez has more than a decade of professional experience in higher education. He is a well-recognized leader and accomplished speaker on issues of diversity and inclusion, with hundreds of faculty, staff, and students at numerous campuses and conferences having attended his workshops. He is also an active member of NASPA, and has previously served as a regional Latinx Knowledge Community Representative. In 10 years at Boston University, Raul has chaired or served on a variety of committees including the Campus Activities Team, Alcohol Task Force, Multicultural Weekend, Student Affairs Management Conference, and the University Retention and Engagement Committee. A first-generation college graduate, Raul holds degrees in Communication and Nonprofit Management, as well as a doctorate in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from Boston University s School of Education. I m excited to take our successful model of developing competent and compassionate educators with an orientation toward social justice and making it available online to anyone with an interest in serving and supporting college students. 8

6 TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES ONLINE MASTER S 9 FAQs who is this program for? A: Students looking to advance their careers in TESOL education; enter the field as professionals in college & adult language programs in the U.S.; or teach at college, adult, primary, or secondary school programs abroad. what will you learn? A: Our program is designed to provide a solid combination of theory & practice in areas such as linguistic theory, intercultural communication, second language acquisition, and computer assisted language learning. Our TESOL program is built on the principle that understanding the practical applications of language theory is not only useful, but necessary. Students in our program develop lesson plans and course materials that they can implement in their current and future roles as TESOL educators. Unlike many other TESOL graduate programs, SED offers a full Master of Education. We will teach you how to think about language in a way that allows you to work with learners in a variety of contexts. Our Computer Assisted Language Learning course will introduce you to the ways in which technologies can aid learners from varied backgrounds, while our Inter-Cultural Communication course will enable you to consider the function of communication between cultural groups. Graduates of our TESOL program have gone on to become teachers and program directors for language schools, advisors, curriculum writers, textbook publishing consultants, and classroom specialists. DR. MARY HUGHES Faculty Director mhughs@bu.edu TESOL EDUCATION Mary Hughes is a Lecturer in the Language Education Program at Boston University. She has been teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level for almost two decades, and her areas of expertise include English as Second Language, theoretical and applied linguistics, and first and second language acquisition theory and methodology. Dr. Hughes research focuses on instructing English language learners on complex grammatical structures that are found in content area texts. She has presented this research in national and international forums, such as MATSOL (Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Speakers of Other Languages) and the TESOL International Association, and has published her research in current issues of the Journal of Pragmatics and Lingua. She is currently an active member of the regional, national, and international TESOL educators community, and sits on the MATSOL Board of Directors. Students in our program study with renowned TESOL experts. In our courses, we emphasize both the linguistic aspects of learning another language and the best current language pedagogy. With this knowledge, our aspiring teachers will stand out in their field. 10

7 Curriculum & Teaching C&T Tracks Students enrolling in our Curriculum & Teaching program choose to specialize in one of the following content tracks: Elementary Education English Education English as a Second Language Education Math Education Science Education Social Studies Education Special Education Required & Elective Courses Depending on your specialization, you ll take a series of required and elective courses to complete your degree. Here are some examples of the courses you ll choose from: Elective Course Examples EN 701 Teaching Classic and Contemporary Texts LR 551 Reading Development, Assessment, and Instruction in the Elementary School ME 563 Problem Solving in Mathematics COURSE EXAMPLES Required Course Examples The following courses are required for students in every content track. AP 526 Family and Community Engagement This seminar examines the role of civil society in improving schools, family/ school/community relationships, and advancing community development, particularly in urban contexts. Students collaborate in group projects on social entrepreneurship, service learning, full-service community schools, and strategic alliances with businesses. LS 690 Classroom Discourse Classroom Discourse dissects the methodological issues present in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, and the role of discourse as a central component of teaching and learning. Participants will learn strategies for building on students linguistic and cultural backgrounds as assets in the learning process CT 556 Classroom Assessment This course emphasizes the principles and procedures of assessment necessary for educational practitioners. This includes diagnostic tests, construction of classroom tests, observation techniques, and performance measures; norm-and criterion-referenced assessment; uses of standardized tests; and the current issues and controversies surrounding classroom assessment. 8 Higher Education Administration COURSE LIST 11 AP 550 Perspectives on Higher Education An introduction to the history and philosophy of higher education in Europe and America that focuses on the interplay between the goals of the university and the demands placed on higher education by society. AP 600 Diversity and Justice in Education This course discusses how schools, colleges, and other educational settings are affected by the growing societal tension between respect for diversity and the maintenance of common purpose. Students learn strategies for integration and separate development, as well as remediation and enrichment. AP 553 Student Affairs in Higher Education Student Affairs in Higher Education features selected readings, class discussions, and guest lectures designed to provide an overview of how departments that constitute student affairs divisions at colleges and universities foster valuable, non-academic learning opportunities outside of the classroom. AP 730 Innovation in Higher Education Technology, public policy, for-profit institutions, and social change are some of the many factors influencing innovation and reform within the landscape of higher education. This course examines the role that faculty and administrators play in guiding that process. AP 755 Legal Issues in Higher Education Legal Issues in Higher Education uses the case method to review and consider the major issues that arise in the administration of institutions of higher education. Through this course, students gain an understanding of these issues and of the ethical and legal principles applicable to their resolution. RS 600 Introduction to Research This course familiarizes students with quantitative, qualitative, mixed method, and action research approaches to inquiry. Students are introduced to the skills and methods used in conducting research and in establishing the criteria for identifying research-based practice, interventions, and curriculum in education settings. The course also introduces best practices for conducting literature searches, examining empirical research studies, and applying these methods to questions relevant to their graduate program area. Introduction to Research ultimately equips students with the tools necessary to become better consumers and interpreters of reserach and develops their ability to participate in research-based efforts to improve education. AP 662 Strategic Planning and Implementation Strategic Planning and Implementation equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead a department, organization, school, and/or school district in effective strategic planning and implementation. Through in-class workshops, lectures, presentations, readings, and more, students gain a complete understanding of the components and discipline vital to the entire strategic planning and implementation process. This course emphasizes the application of learned concepts and skills and provides the opportunity for aspiring leaders to put such learning into practice by developing a fullyfledged strategic planning document on a project of their choice. AP 612 Governance and Decision-Making in Higher Education Through the study of decision-making structures in higher education, students gain an understanding of the historical and modern roles of trustees, faculty, administrators, and students in the governance process. This course also examines how external forces influence decisions at a campus level and addresses how accountability of the governing bodies and decision-makers is assessed and enforced. AP 551 Issues in Higher Education Administration This course examines the crucial issues facing higher education administrators, including those surrounding curriculum, governance, finance, and mission. 12

9 TESOL TL 509 Foundations of TESOL Pedagogy Foundations of TESOL Pedagogy examines the current theories of second-language teaching, educational material analysis, and practices in adapting and expanding textbook lessons, with a focus on adult, college, and international teaching. LS 565 Applied Linguistics: Language and Linguistics Survey Students gain an introduction to contemporary linguistics, including phonological, morphological, and syntactic theory, sociolinguistics, first- and second-language acquisition, and discourse theory. This survey also covers the application of various branches of linguistics to educational practice, including how to address different cultures in the classroom and the overall role of language in education. LS 658 Second Language Acquistion This course examines the research and theories of second language acquisition with a focus on adult second language acquisition in both naturalistic and classroom contexts. Students explore the major theories, models, and hypotheses related to classroom practice. TL 512 Computer Assisted Language Learning (CLL) Students gain an understanding of how new technologies might help to meet the needs of language learners in a variety of settings and contexts, through examinations of the relationship between second and foreign language learners and teachers as mediated by different technological environments, including voice recognition, speech synthesis, machine-assisted translation, natural language parsers, computational linguistics and concordancing, streaming media, and mobile technology. RS 600 Introduction to Research Introduction to Research explores quantitative, mixed method, and action research approaches to inquiry. Students learn the skills and methods used in conducting research and establishing the criteria for identifying researchbased practice, interventions and curriculum in education settings. LS 626 Inter-Cultural Communication: Theoretical and Methodological Approaches Through exposure to theories and literature drawn from anthropology, linguistics, psychology, and sociology related to the factors that influence communication between cultural groups, students learn how to apply such theories to the practice of language teaching. LS 567 Structure of English Structure of English is an in-depth study of the forms and meanings of the basic structures of contemporary English, with a special focus on the areas which pose problems for learners and teachers. This course emphasises the application of linguistic concepts in resolving such challenges. TL 835 Advanced Seminar in TESOL Pedagogy This course examines the methodological issues involved in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. Through an in-depth treatment of curricular, pedagogical, and language program topics, students demonstrate their ability to develop effective curriculum projects. Lesson Design and Assessment COURSE LIST Students design and demonstrate ESL lesson plans based on a principled framework, utilizing templates for goal-driven lessons that result in measurable student learning outcomes. This course also includes an exploration of theories of student assessment at all stages of learning, from initial diagnostics and needs analyses to recognition and assessment of student progress
