FPA is the home for the next generation of CFP professionals. By providing diverse education, relationship building, information-sharing, and volunteer opportunities that create positive social change, we are the definitive resource for students to gain knowledge and establish relationships. Currently, there are not enough young CFP professionals to meet the public s demand for quality financial planning. The future rests with new planners coming into the financial planning profession and to those providing resources and programming to help them jump-start and advance in their careers. FPA is committed to help shape this future through the FPA Student Program. The purpose of this program is to close the gap between supply and demand. Additionally, we hope to increase student awareness about FPA, with the ultimate goal of keeping them actively involved in the organization to become committed CFP professionals and FPA members. By working together, we can be the ONE CONNECTION to engage future leaders of the profession and help them bridge the gap through their career development. There are many ways for chapters to get involved. To that end, we have created this guide to help chapters develop and implement programs in their areas. Please note, you are not required to coordinate these programs we just want to pass them along as ideas to support your chapter s student efforts. As this initiative continues to grow, new ideas will emerge. We encourage you to share your activities with us so we can update this guide and others can learn from your successes. If you have questions or would like to learn more about these ideas, please send an to Students@OneFPA.org. We look forward to working with you! 2016, Financial Planning Association 2 P a g e

FPA Guide for Student Engagement Value Proposition: The first thing your chapter will want to do is communicate the FPA Student Program value proposition. It is an important piece of communication as it may be the #1 factor that encourages potential members to continue learning about FPA and the many benefits we offer. Below is the FPA Student Program Value Proposition we request chapters share: FPA if the home for the next generation of CFP professionals. By providing diverse education, relationship building, information-sharing and volunteer opportunities that create positive social change, we are the definitive resource for students and new professionals to gain knowledge and establish relationships. Add this statement on your website, event materials, printed publications, relevant FPA Connect communities, etc. Start a FPA Student Chapter: FPA chapters partner with universities across the country to help students learn more about the profession and the benefits of FPA membership. Learn more about why and how to start a FPA student community on page 4. Best Practices/Tips: See suggestions on how your chapter can engage with students on pages 5-6. Student Program Resources: FPA has a variety of resources to 1) help students develop in their careers as financial planners and 2) help your chapter involve and engage students in chapter activities. Learn more about these offerings on pages 7-8. If you have any questions, please send an to Students@OneFPA.org 2016, Financial Planning Association 3 P a g e

FPA Student Chapters FPA chapters form relationships with universities nationwide to increase awareness about FPA and grow the profession. By working with universities, we can get in front of thousands of students to spread the word about FPA and the CFP certification. Why Start a FPA Student Chapter? There are many reasons to form a student chapter including: Grow future leaders of the profession and help bridge the gap between supply and demand of the delivery of quality financial planning. Chapters that engage students early in their career paths will have a greater success at keeping them actively involved in FPA throughout their career. Sustain the viability and future of FPA and be recognized as an innovative thought leader and advocate for the CFP practitioner and the profession. How to Start a FPA Student Chapter: Forming a FPA Student Chapter is easy! Steps include: 1. Build a relationship with the CFP Board Registered Program Director or faculty advisor who oversees the financial planning degree program at the university. Find a list of CFP Registered Program Directors in your area. 2. Assign one FPA Chapter Board Member to be the university and student liaison. 3. Introduce yourself to the CFP Board Registered Program Director or faculty advisor and share the FPA University Partner Agreement with them. See sample in Addendum on pages Through the FPA University Partner Program, the university receives up to two (2), one-year complimentary FPA faculty memberships. 4. Once the agreement is signed by the university, send an electronic copy to Students@OneFPA.org for FPA signature. 5. FPA will sign and return the agreement to the chapter. 6. Provide the signed agreement by both parties to the university for their records. 7. The FPA chapter and the university will work together on the deliverables outlined in the agreement and student engagement activities. 2016, Financial Planning Association 4 P a g e

Best Practices and Tips: Student Engagement Congratulations! Your chapter is ready to help students learn more about the financial planning profession and introduce the many benefits FPA offers to help them jump-start and advance in their careers. Below are suggestions to help support your chapter s student program: Offer chapter leaders as speakers for student chapter meetings or in the classroom. FPA has a turnkey presentation that addresses why to become a CFP professional, career paths, and FPA resources to help students along the continuum of their careers (Request Presentation). Host a FPA Career Day event with a local university to help students find internships and/or meet with potential employers. (Request the FPA Career Day Chapter Toolkit). Provide a local mentoring program via the FPA MentorMatch Chapter Program (Request the FPA MentorMatch Chapter Program toolkit). Offer educational programming that includes client case studies, information on career paths, public speaking tips, ideas on how to fulfill the CFP experience requirement, and buying a practice. Consider online educational programming (e.g., webinars, virtual meetings, etc.), especially if the university is not near your chapter. Invite the FPA Student Community to participate in chapter activities, preferably at no cost. Pair students up with a buddy to help them meet and engage with chapter members. Host a FPA Student Community meeting in conjunction with a regular chapter meeting. For example, your chapter coordinates a meeting, students attend, and then it spins off into a student event. Invite students to chapter events. them chapter activities that may be of special interest including: o o o o o o Educational programming Mentoring opportunities Internship openings FPA Career Day event Study Groups Relevant articles on financial planning careers, etc. Encourage students to volunteer for chapter events including your annual symposium, pro bono, advocacy, community service, etc. Make sure the Program Director and/or student liaison is engaged with the chapter. Invite them to serve on the chapter s Board of Directors. 2016, Financial Planning Association 5 P a g e

Recommend the Program Director share the Journal of Financial Planning as part of their curriculum. The Journal is FPA s #1 member benefit and is a great way to showcase FPA. It will also help students learn current trends in the profession. Invite all students (members and non-members) to participate in the FPA Student Chapter. This will help non-members learn more about FPA and the profession. Program Directors may want to encourage non-members to join FPA so they have access to the many benefits we offer to help them along their career path. Provide financial assistance to the FPA Student Chapter through student member reimbursements provided to your chapter. These funds can cover meeting costs, scholarship programs, FPA s Annual Conference student registrations, travel costs, etc. Suggest the Program Director give students participation points as part of their curriculum, involvement in the FPA Student Chapter can be several points. Work with the FPA Student Community to organize meetings, speakers, topics, etc. Your chapter may want to host several meetings on campus, allowing more opportunities for students to attend. Share information about the profession, trends, career paths, etc. Help students find internships, meet with hiring firms, and complete the CFP experience requirement. Direct students to the FPA Job Board to identify internship and entry-level job opportunities (see Addendum, page 19 to implement a job board on your chapter website). Coordinate Shadow Days, where members volunteer to have students observe them at work for a ½ to full day. Offer scholarships for students to attend chapter or national events and cover costs for CFP Exam preparation (see Addendum, pages to learn more about partnering with education providers to offer scholarships on exam preparation materials). Create a chapter based study group to help students pass the CFP Exam. 2016, Financial Planning Association 6 P a g e
