In addition, the master allows students to continue 3rd cycle studies, in Statistics or other areas of Science and Engineering, as well to pursue a teaching or research career. The programme provides a consistent and diversified knowledge in data analysis and statistical inference, with special emphasis on the practical applications using statistical software (SPSS, R, Matlab, etc.) as well as in the interpretation and effective communication of results. Combining (mandatory) course units (CUs) of basic and advanced training in Statistics with course units of practical application of Statistics in different areas, the master allows the students to adapt the study programme to their professional or scientific goals. A graduate in Applied Statistics presents itself as a professional able to integrate multidisciplinary teams in different areas of knowledge, which can make the difference in public, private and/or academic domains. Knowledgeable of a vast range of statistical methodologies, and endowed with a critical and integrated view of their applicability to modelling and solving real problems in different contexts, the student will have the skills and expertise to assist credible decision-making based on data collection and processing. Among others, the areas of expertise of a Statistical professional include: Actuarial : economic forecasts, risk assessment in investments and insurances, credit risk in banks and insurance companies; Public opinion analysis and monitoring of its evolution, for marketing companies, government, social communication, political parties, National Institute of Statistics, among others; Teaching in higher education institutions; Monitoring production and quality control of products as well as the environmental extent, in Industry; Scientific modelling, design and analysis of experiments for products, medicines and medical treatments innovation, in hospitals or pharmaceutical companies; Surveys of population evolution, environmental impact, or weather and climate changeability. Each Course Unit has its own assessment methods, which include formal examinations, but also participation in classes, lectures, seminars, projects, tutorials, practical work, fieldwork, self-study or other assessment tools. Students are required to successfully complete all assessment activities with a minimum grade of 9.5 (on a scale of 1-20) in order to finalize the course units and obtain the corresponding ECTS Credits. The programme discloses pools of expertise in both communicational and multimedia areas, meeting the current societal demands and including new forms of communication with digital media, where the Internet plays an important role. Characterized by a practical approach, which emphasizes the hands-on contact of students with an assortment of innovative tools and the most sought-after today s technologies, this programme endows students with specialized competences in content production and publishing, as well as the upgrading of Internet-based multimedia applications. This Master aims to withhold ability to conduct research and innovation in the fields of Design, Multimedia Content Production, and Development and Optimization of Web applications. The ensuing professionals are also expected to have problem-solving skills in this field, and be able to gather, select, and interpret specific information, support and present solutions, thrive for research, innovation, and lifelong learning Students are qualified to join the staff on companies / organizations / teams in the field of Communication & Multimedia, particularly those working on design, adaptation, and management of systems for dissemination of information, as well as its production, marketing, and/or maintenance, and for development of Web applications. The Master programme in Communication & Multimedia intends to train specialists for wide-range sectors on services and manufacturing, public service, broadcasting media, education, and research. Such training symbiotically articulates course units that focus on developing soft/hard skills, theoretical and applied design, specification, implementation, deployment, management, integration and operation of computer systems. These course units ensure two profile strands: crosswise expertise that combines skills in several areas, and specific knowledge in areas such as: - Computer graphics and digital signal processing; - Information systems; - Ubiquitous computing and smart devices, environments and interactions; - Multimedia systems. Students should be equipped to face new and unfamiliar situations, proposing solutions and proceedings. Besides the standard curriculum requirements, students are fostered for gaining autonomy, learning postures and behaviors that will facilitate them to incorporate the job market. Graduates are intended to join the staff of companies, organizations and teams in Informatics Engineering and Communications, particularly if aimed at the development of computer systems and networks, as well as for the production, distribution, marketing and maintenance of solutions. They are likely to take part in various sectors such as services, industry, public administration, media, among others. The main objective of the 2nd cycle Energy Engineering is to train competent engineers in professional activities associated with: - Research and evaluation of fossil, nuclear and renewable energy resources; - Technologies for energy production; - Harnessing of renewable energy sources; - Storage, transportation and distribution of energy; - Transformation and deployment of energy; - Energy efficiency of buildings; - Aspects of environmental, economic, legal, and security certification in the energetic scope. Hence, engineers must dominate both traditional and emerging energy technologies, with in-depth knowledge on Climate Change. Graduates should have an integrated view of knowledge, embracing technological, scientific and socioeconomic aspects inherent to this area. The skills acquired should meet the requirements of the Mechanical Engineering industry, and may also be directed for investigation activities. It is intended that prospective professionals acquire the following skills: - Ability to project, design, implement and maintain machinery and its components; - Ability to project, design, implement and maintain structures such as pressure vessels, piping and other industrial facilities; - Ability to design, implement and maintain energy facilities, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning technology, as well as pertaining to renewable energy; - Use technical and scientific skills to solve a variety of problems in an integrated and rational way; - Implementation of technological strategies to foster a sustainable development; - Recognize the need for experimentation and be able to design, perform and interpret the results of an experimental program; - Participate in multidisciplinary teams abiding the principles of personal integrity and professional ethics; - Development of a set of transversal skills, particularly in terms of innovation, management and work with crosswise teams. Given the breadth of the proposed programme, future graduates will apply their professional skills in various sectors of activity: - Equipment manufacturing and consumer goods industries, predominantly in the field of mechanical and thermal equipment; - Energy production and distribution industry, and HVAC industry; - Companies that supply services, namely in the evaluation of projects and consultancy; - Laboratories and research institutions for development and industrial innovation; - Central and local administration. It differs significantly from the Bachelor by improving expertise as well as scientific and technical knowledge. It is intended to train professionals for positions of higher scientific and technical responsibility, addressing the needs of disabled and other mobility impairments individuals. Be an important liaison to act in response to special needs individuals, towards a more dignified and autonomous life. Career opportunities encompass: Assistive Technology, Geriatrics and Accessibility companies; Associations and organizations to support people with disabilities and / or elderly; Companies, organizations and health-care services, including hospitals; Services concerning vocational rehabilitation and assistive technologies for special education; Information and Communication Technology Companies; Bodies of the Central Government, Regional and Local; Research Centers and Laboratories; Higher Education Institutions; Among others. Each Course Unit has its own assessment methods, which include formal examinations, but also participation in classes, lectures, seminars, projects, tutorials, practical work, fieldwork, self-study or other assessment tools. Students are required to successfully complete all assessment activities with a minimum grade of 9.5 (on a scale of 1-20) in order to finalize the course units and obtain the corresponding ECTS Credits.
