Overview and Preparation for the NJ DLM Teacher Module for DLM Test Administrators October 17, 2017 NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Preparation for DLM This presentation gives information on the use of documents and presentations to prepare your students for the spring assessment. It also gives information on the required training for teachers to be completed. Your School Assessment coordinator will answer any questions you may have. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
List of Topics in this Presentation DLM Basic Info Staff Roles and Responsibilities NJ & DLM Required Training Preparation for Instruction and Assessment Professional Development and Educational Resources DLM AP and FC Surveys Practice Testlets Manuals and Resources Reminders NJ DLM Teacher Training October
NJ DLM Basic Information Students with the most significant cognitive disabilities are the only students eligible to take the NJ Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) alternate assessment. IEPs teams must use the NJ DLM Participation Criteria Guidelines to make this determination. Student in grades 3-8 and grade 11 participate in the English language arts and math assessments. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 participate in the science assessment. Test administration occurs between April 4 to June 1, NJ DLM Teacher Training October
NJ DLM Basic Information NJ uses the DLM Year-End (YE) model which is a computer-based assessment based on the NJSLS and DLM Essential Elements (EEs). Grade specific test specifications (blueprints on skills that are tested) are available. Use the links to the Educator Resource pages to obtain information on the test specifications. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Use the Drop Down Arrows to Access Materials Under the Manuals and Blueprints arrow you can access the ELA, math, and science blueprints: NJ DLM Teacher Training October
DLM Computer Based Testing The assessment is a computer adaptive assessment. The process is: The teacher completes the student s First Contact Survey indicating current level of demonstrated skill level, etc. These answers help the system pick the first set of test items. A student takes a small set of items, called a testlet, then the system takes into account the level of difficulty of the test items and the students performance (correct or incorrect answers). Based on the student s performance another testlet is selected, which contain items that are around the same level, somewhat easier, or somewhat harder than the last testlet (same, lower, or higher level skills are selected). This is an iterative process until the testlets address all Essential Elements in the YE test blueprint. The number of testlets vary based on grade and content area tested. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
DLM Computer Based Testing A small percentage of students will be assessed outside the system via DLM Teacher Administered tests. The student will not view the computer screen as the teachers will administer the questions based on his/her view of the testlets on the computer. When this occurs a teacher will be asked to gather objects to use during the test. A student may sometimes have a teacher administered testlet, then sometimes not, based on the adaptive nature of the test and modifications to the level of testlet assigned to the student. Information on teacher administered testlets is found in the DLM Test Administrator s Manual. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
DLM Educator Roles Teachers have the role of Test Administrator. Teachers administer the assessment to their students. Teachers may not fulfill the other DLM designated roles: District/School Assessment Coordinators District Data Manager District Technology Representative Teachers will receive their login ID and password to the DLM system after their District Data Manager uploads the teacher s information into the DLM Educator Portal system. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Roles and Responsibilities Test Administrator (Classroom Teacher) Individual teacher administers assessments to students and assists in the selection of accessibility features and necessary supports Complete First Contact and Access Profile Surveys Verify applicable students are on your assigned rosters Administer practice tests Review Test Administrator Manual Review Accessibility Manual Contact your School Assessment Coordinator if you have questions. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Roles and Responsibilities There are three additional specific roles for district educators in the DLM testing process. The School and District Assessment Coordinators Are the point of contact for all assessment responsibilities excluding the tasks of the two roles listed below Oversees and assists teachers in their roles Schedules teacher training and ensure proper test administration See DLM site for required training manual The Technology Representative will load the DLM KITE application onto your computer devices so that you may access the practice tests and administer spring testing. The Data Manager will upload and review data to create your classroom test rosters, will obtain all login IDs for your district, and will add new students to the system as necessary. 61 Online Surveys In February 2018 you will need to complete the First Contact survey and the Access Profile survey for each student on your test rosters. Prior to February please review the DLM manuals and begin to consider which survey responses to submit and accessibility features to use for each student. More information on the First Contact and Access Profile surveys are found in the Educator Portal User Guide. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Accessibility Supports DLM offers a variety of accessibility supports during assessment. These supports are delivered through the KITE system and are determined by responses to the First Contact (FC) and Access Profile (AP) survey. Troubleshooting solutions in selecting supports can be found in the Accessibility Manual. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Accessibility Supports You must review the Accessibility Manual for important information regarding completing the AP survey and administering the DLM. Included in the manual is: Six Steps to Customize DLM Accessibility Supports for Students Step 1: Include Eligible Students in the DLM Alternate Assessment. Step 2: Learn About the Accessibility Supports and what the DLM Alternate Assessment provides. Step 3: Discuss and Select appropriate Supports: Considerations for IEP Teams Step 4: Selecting and viewing supports in the KITE System Step 5: Prepare for the Assessment: Using the Chosen Accessibility Supports Step 6: Evaluate the Accessibility Supports Used After the Assessment NJ DLM Teacher Training October
DLM Practice Testlets NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Practice Testlet Information Practice testlets are available on the DLM KITE system and should be administered to the students prior to April 2018 testing. Practice testlets relate to some accessibility features the student may use. Select the practice testlets ( demos ) based on the AP features. The purpose of using the practice items are to give the student experience with the online test experience prior to answering live test questions. This allows the student and teacher to be aware of the computer features, and helps to determine whether the student or teacher would drive (use the computer mouse) during testing. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Practice Testlets Refer to the Test Administration manual along with the Guide to Practice Activities & Released Testlets Year-End model for information on accessing practice testlets. Practice testlets login ID always start with demo for the login info. Personalized practice testlets are not available in the DLM system. The practice test button seen on screen after logging in to a student s account does not function. DO NOT use the student s login ID and password when looking for practice tests! NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Engaging the Students DLM engagement activities are present in the testlets. The engagement activities do not require a student response to a DLM test question. The test administrator will engage the student in the activity and may ask factual questions but not lead them to answers. The activities are meant to give the student a context for the questions, taps and activates prior knowledge and experience, and/or introduces the concept(s) to be addressed. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
Upcoming Information More information on engagement activities, clarification on test directions, etc., will be included in the Winter 2018 presentations. NJ DLM Teacher Training October
