To help new members in our Chapter to understand academic work better and adapt to the postgraduate life earlier, several students in different fields, for example in Optical Tweezers and 3D display technologies, gave a presentation to share their experience on 5 April 2010 in the Institute of Modern Optics, Nankai University, Tianjin, China. 2. PhD student Zhijian Hu attended the Optics & Photonics Annual Meeting of SPIE to give an oral presentation in San Diego last summer with financial support from SPIE. (1-6 August, San Diego, California, USA)

4 3. The 2010 Optical Congress organized by the Chinese Optical Society (COS) and supported by Tianjin Univ. and Nankai Univ. was held in Tianjin on August 26. Director of the Institute of Modern Optics (IMO) Guoguang Mu delivered a speech on the conference. Four PhD students of our club gave presentations on their research work. More than ten members of our club were selected as student volunteers to the congress. (26 August, Tianjin China)

To help new members in our Chapter to learn academic conference presentation skills, we held an academic competition among the students who were divided into five groups and every group prepared a postal on molecular spectrum. Under the supervision of Prof. Fang Hui, who is our spectroscopy lecturer, this competition was implemented successfully. (8 October, Tianjin China)

6 5. Prof. Pierre Chavel, who is the director of Laboratory Charles Fabry de I Institut d Optique(1988-) and the head of the Optical Systems and Components group (2005-) of that laboratory, was invited to give us two lectures on spatial coherence and diffraction by simple optical microstructures respectively. (3-4 Nov., Tianjin China) Lecture A: Heuristics for the Description of Diffraction by Simple Optical Microstructures. Lecture B: Spatial Coherence: Interferometer Design and the Localisation of Interference Fringes. 6. To promote exchanges and corporation between professors in different fields in the College of Information Technical Science (CITS), our advisor Professor Xiaocong Yuan, who is also the Vice Dean of CITS, organized a cross-disciplinary workshop on optics, electronics, automation and their bio-medical applications. Our members attended the workshop. (12 December, Tianjin China)

8 Future Activities 1. New officers will be elected. 2. Invite experts in optics and photonics to conduct lectures in Nankai University. 3. Enroll new members into our chapter. 4. Website is a window to the outside world, therefore we would like to build our own Chapter webpage and try our best to maintain it. 5. Attending conference is a good way to expand our vision and broaden our scope of knowledge, therefore we will encourage more student members to participate in more conferences. 6. We plan to hold a public lab tour for undergraduate to learn research activities. 7. To keep close relations with other SPIE chapters, we plan to organize some joint activities. 8. Visit local companies for better understanding of optical engineering and practical applications. 9. Prepare to attend the 3 rd International Symposium on Photonics and Optoelectronics 2011 in Wuhan. 10. Organize a job fair for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
