The only par of he course ha does no involve augh sudy and group work, is he final par he Disseraion. (This MA does no offer a disance learning mode of learning.) The course begins in early Sepember 2018 and alhough here is no official deadline we would recommend ha you apply as soon as possible o avoid disappoinmen as we do have a limi on he number of sudens we can offer places o. For enry o our course, you need o send in a porfolio of creaive wriing, in addiion o holding a good degree in English or a relaed subjec. The porfolio of creaive wriing is an imporan elemen of he applicaion (boh for ars graduaes and for hose from anoher discipline or wihou radiional qualificaions) and should represen some of your bes work o dae. A srong porfolio could override he need for a 2:1 in English. Please selec carefully and presen accuraely. A porfolio migh consis of any bu no all of he following: hree shor sories hree chapers from a novel 5-8 poems a radio play wo or hree scenes of a sage play Or a combinaion of he above, e.g. a shor sory and five poems. 2 The MA in Creaive Wriing is designed o give sudens a srucure wihin which hey can develop boh heir wriing and criical skills, experimening wih a range of possibiliies available o he conemporary wrier. This is an exciing, imaginaive course. Our sudens publish and win prizes. All wrien assignmens, apar from he relaed commenaries on he process of creaing he work, are creaive. The final augh module includes a session given by agens and ediors, and saff are willing o advise on professional issues of placing work. All modules are augh by pracising creaive wriers. The home uiion fees for 2017 were: Full-ime Par ime per 30 credi module and for he disseraion. The fees for 2018 will be released in he new year. 3 Aendance The Roue is offered par-ime or full-ime (usually a 12 week semeser wih a break of one week in he middle). The uorials are on Mondays (5pm-8pm) and/or Wednesdays (5pm 8pm) if you are sudying full-ime hen you would be aending Mondays AND Wednesdays and if you are par-ime hen you will be in on Mondays (1 s year) OR Wednesdays (2 nd years) Enry requiremens Candidaes should normally have a good honours degree in English, or in a relaed discipline, or non-sandard enry via a procedure of accredied prior learning is possible in suiable cases. Course conen The MA comprises four augh modules: The Wriing Sudio Sources and Transformaions Meaphor and he Imaginaion Launching he Manuscrip Par-ime Roue: Usually one module per semeser (wo per year), followed by he disseraion (now called The Manuscrip 20,000 words). The modules are inended o form a series of inpu sessions which are followed by workshops, in which he focus is on developing he suden s wriing. Full-ime Roue: Two modules per semeser (four per year), followed by he disseraion (The Manuscrip 20,000 words). Assessmen To gain an MA in Creaive Wriing, sudens need o complee all four modules from hose offered and a disseraion of 20,000 words (or poery/drama equivalens). Each module is assessed by an assignmen of approximaely 6,000 words or equivalen. To gain a Posgraduae Diploma in Creaive Wriing, sudens need o complee four modules. His prizewinning poery pamphle collecion, Walking o he Fire Tower, was published in 1997 by Redbeck Press. Fas appreared in 2007 from Pighog Press. A furher selecion of new poery appeared in Oxford Poes 2006 (Carcane). Recen publicaions include poems in Irish Pages and The London Magazine. Hugh's research ineress include conemporary poery and he environmen (eco-criicism), and he recenly convened an inernaional conference, in collaboraion wih ASLE, eniled Cross Ferilisaions: Lieraure, Science and Naure, on he subjec. He is he co-edior of Mouh Ogres and Dreaming Beass, he Tongues and Srings Anhologies o which many MA wriers have conribued. Hugh s docoral hesis examined he via negaiva in he poeic imaginaion. Her sories have been widely published in boh he UK and abroad, and broadcas on he BBC. In 2008 she was awarded he Sociey of Auhors' Prize for Shor Ficion, in 2011 she was shorlised for he BBC Naional Shor Sory Award, and in 2012 she was longlised for The Inernaional Sunday Times EFG Shor Sory Award. Her sory collecion Fifeen Modern Tales of Aracion (Penguin) was 'highly recommended' by Time Ou and deemed by he Guardian o be 'as invenive as i is original'. She is currenly compleing her second shor sory collecion. MacLeod is also he auhor of hree novels, The Changeling (Macmillan 1996), The Wave Theory of Angels (Penguin 2005), and Unexploded, which was longlised for he 2013 Man Booker prize. Alongside her wriing, she is Professor of Conemporary Ficion a he Universiy of Chicheser and Direcor of Thresholds Inernaional Shor Sory Forum. Sephen Molle, BA, MA Modules: Sources and Transformaions Research/Publicaions: Sephen's many radio plays broadcas on Radio 4 include: The Joke, A House Halfway o Africa, Curious Exchange, A Whie Velve Nighcap in Florida, Leo Adrif. His plays have feaured in Radio 4's Pick of he Week and have been favourably reviewed in The Guardian, Independen and The Observer. Karen Sevens, BA, MA in Creaive Wriing, PGCHE Modules: The Wriing Sudio, Launching The Manuscrip Research/Publicaions: Karen has a special ineres in he conemporary novel and shor ficion. His poems have been published in he UK, Souh Africa, USA, and Holland, and have gained success in numerous major coness, including he Naional Poery Compeiion, 2003, and he 2005 Forward Anhology. He is a former wrier-in-residence a HMP Noingham Prison, where he edied Beyond he Wall, a collecion of inmaes' work. Naomi holds a PhD in Creaive Wriing from he Universiy of Wales and has also augh a Goldsmihs College. She has published wo collecions of poery wih Waerloo Press, including The Nigh Pavilion, a 2008 Poery Book Sociey Recommendaion; her hird collecion, Adamanine, is forhcoming in 2018 from Red Hen Press (US). Also a verse dramais and libreis, her work for heare has been produced in London and Torono. Her firs novel, cyberchiller Seoul Survivors was published by Jo Flecher Books (Quercus) in Feb 2013, followed by Asra (2014), Rook Song (2015) and The Blood of he Hoopoe (2016), he firs hree volumes of The Gaia Chronicles, a pos-apocalypic eco-science fanasy quare. The Universiy of Chicheser's Creaive Wriing Fellow, Nick Warburon, visis wice a year or so. MA sudens are encouraged o sign up wih Nick for one-off uorials and o send him work ahead. Nick is an exremely experienced wrier, wih more han hiry plays broadcas on radio and exensive credis on elevision, for example, Holby Ciy, Eas Enders, Docors, Born and Bred. Nick has also wrien several children s books and serialised novels for Radio 4, for example Faher and Son by Edmund Gosse, Resurrecion by Tolsoy, and Miss Read s Thrush Green. MA wriers have very much valued heir uorials wih Nick. Wriers Isabel Ashdown and Sian Rees are our Royal Lierary Fund Fellows and can be conaced for a uorial on wriing skills.
