Pearson Education: You may purchase this in the TCC bookstore. It is also available new and used through Amazon and other online vendors. CATALOG DESCRIPTION The study of art from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures as both product and process. Aesthetic judgment making in evaluation of art from different times and places is stressed. 3 credits. No laboratory.

2 COURSE OBJECTIVES In this course, students will: identify and apply the elements of art and the principles of design. make aesthetic judgements about works of art. recognize various art media and processes and evaluate how media choices in art making impact the message and aesthetic attributes of a work of art. describe, distinguish and discuss the major characteristics of art from select cultures and movements across time and place. write about works of art and analyze their meanings in relation to cultural, historical and psychological contexts. categorize works of art thematically and generate a cohesive project that unifies works from across time and place by theme. TEACHING METHODS This course requires active student participation and a commitment to taking responsibility for one s learning. Though I will present some illustrated lectures, much of your learning will involve participation in class activities (analyzing works of visual art, hands on activities, reading relevant texts, quick writing and brainstorming exercises, debating, drawing and participation in group discussions and projects), regular assignments completed on Blackboard and museum visits. Preparatory reading of the textbook and other assigned resources before each class is essential to your success in the course. EVALUATION AND GRADING Your performance in this course will be evaluated based on attendance, participation, weekly assignments, quizzes and a thematic final project. There are a total of 250 points available for the course. They are distributed as follows: 6 total weekly assignments (80 points 10 points, 20 points) 3 weekly quizzes (60 points) 1 final thematic project (80 points) Attendance (15 points) Participation (15 points)

3 I follow the traditional grading scale and will award grades as indicated below. A = % B = 80 89% F = 59% and below C = 70 79% D = 60 69% LATE WORK AND MAKEUP WORK I understand that life can be complicated and that there are unpleasant surprises. Therefore I have established the following policy for late work: Any work that is turned in late will automatically receive a penalty grade of 10% per day that it is late. Work that is more than 3 days late will not be accepted. If there are extenuating circumstances that prevent you from turning in your work on time, we can discuss your situation individually and you will be required to provide me with proper documentation, at my discretion, in order for the work to be accepted. ATTENDANCE As this is a Fast Track course, we only have a total of 8 class meetings. Therefore, it is essential that you come to every class. If you are not able to attend class, please let me know. You are responsible for the information covered in class when you are absent. Absences will affect your grade as noted above. Students should be familiar with TCC s policy on attendance and withdrawal. 4 CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE Open and mutually respectful communication of varied opinions, beliefs, and perspectives during classroom or online discussions and activities encourages the free exchange of ideas that is essential to higher learning and to the ability to learn from each other. Use of any electronic device is at the discretion of the instructor. COURSE WITHDRAWAL: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for the deadline that applies to the course(s). Begin the process with a discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course. Contact the Advisement Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Withdrawal and/or change to an audit from a course after the drop/add period can alter the financial aid award for the current and future semesters. Students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of F or AW, which may have financial aid consequences for the student. AND BLACKBOARD COMMUNICATION All TCC students receive a designated MyTCC address (ex: jane.doe@mail.tulsacc.edu). All communications to you about TCC and course assignments will be sent to your MyTCC address. You must use MyTCC to send to and receive from the instructor regarding this course. Please check your several times each week to ensure that you are kept abreast of information germane to our course. We will also communicate through Blackboard under my TCC. It is your responsibility to login to our course interface on Blackboard several times each week to complete the assignments and quizzes located there and to read any notifications that I post via this interface. CLASS CANCELLATIONS TCC rarely closes. If extreme weather conditions or emergency situations arise, TCC always gives cancellation notices to radio and television stations. This information is also posted on the TCC website ( ). If I am unable to attend class, you

5 will receive notice from ACS and I will contact you via as well. If a class session is cancelled for any reason, it is your responsibility to check Blackboard that day and week to see the assignments and activities posted for the week to compensate for the cancelled class session. Deaf and hard of hearing students ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may: require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test. record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question. recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class or administratively withdraw the student from the class. record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester.

6 Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such request to the Dean of Student Services. Institutional Statement: Each student is responsible for being aware of the information contained in the TCC Catalog, the TCC Student Policies & Resources Handbook, and semester information listed in the class schedule.
