1 INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL CHEMISTRY (CHM 1025C) PREREQUISITE: One year of high school algebra or minimum grade of C in MAT 0020C or MAT 0024C or appropriate score on an approved assessment. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Prepares students without high school chemistry or with inadequate background for CHM1045C. Modern chemical theories used to develop understanding of fundamentals of inorganic chemistry and its applications. Emphasis on quantitative relationships, using dimensional analysis to solve problems. Laboratory experiences are integral part of course. May not be taken for credit subsequent to earning C or better in CHM 1045C. INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Silvia Zapico szapico@valenciacc.edu MAILCODE: 6-1 REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS: Textbook: Introductory Chemistry, A Foundation, Zumdahl, Houghton Mifflin, 6 th edition, 2008, or Valencia s customized edition. Laboratory Manual: Introductory Chemistry, Corwin, 5 th edition, Calculator: Inexpensive, scientific calculator non-programmable. Lab Goggles: Mandatory for lab experiments. EVALUATION: 4 Exams (100pts. each) 400 pts. A=90%-100% 11 Lab Experiments (15pts. each) 165 pts. B=80%-89% 5 Quizzes (10pts. each) 50 pts. C=70%-79% 615 pts. D=60%-69% F=less than 60% EXAMS: Five (5) one hour exams, counting the final evaluation, will be given this term. The lowest grade will be dropped. Each exam will cover a minimum of two chapters and they will be announced in class a week ahead of time. No make up exams will be given. QUIZZES: Eight (8) to ten (10) quizzes will be given throughout the semester. The five highest grades will count toward the final grade. Quizzes will be graded over ten. LAB EXPERIMENTS: Twelve lab experiments will be performed. The eleven highest lab experiments grades will count toward the final grade. Lab experiments will be graded over 15, and are due the following week. No late reports are accepted and there will be no make ups. A tentative schedule is attached. Only students who are on time and appropriately attired will be allowed to attend the lab. Safety glasses will be worn at all times during experiments.

2 A tentative schedule is attached. COMPETENCIES ADDRESSED: The Valencia Student Core Competencies will be emphasized during the semester. In this course, through classroom lecture, discussion, group work, lab experiments, and other learning activities, the students will further develop a level of mastery of these core competencies. Critical thinking skills will be used in all aspects of this course. This is a very important skill in order to study, understand and apply concepts in Chemistry and enhance the learning of chemistry. Therefore, it is important for the student to read and study with understanding. The Value Core competency will be emphasized as the student finds relevance and connections with everyday live and real life scenarios in the lab. The student will learn to value Chemistry as a central science. During the semester, there will be many levels of communication. These will be in the form of applied learning reports, sharing of ideas with the instructor and classmates. The act competency skills will be developed through the enhanced learning of chemical concepts, laws, theories and their applications. This learning will allow the student to make decisions and to reason using facts and the scientific method. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance will be recorded. Absences will result in a zero for the assignments. Excessive absences (two weeks or more) may result in a notification sent to the students. If further absences occur after this notification, the student may be withdrawn from the class with a grade of W as appropriate.
