This course satisfies core requirements of the BSBA, and is a pre-requisite for most courses in the Management Concentration. It is an appropriate elective for students majoring in the Sports Management, Communications, Music Industry, and many other majors. III. Describe/assess the different trends and perspectives in management, including classical, humanistic, and management science. 3. Identify how working with international companies is different from working with domestic companies. 4. Explain the challenges and experiences of entering a corporate environment as a manager. 5. Identify the cultural differences in working in an international corporate environment. 6. Describe the utilitarian, individualist, moral-rights, and justice approaches of decision making and provide real-life examples. 7. Explain the process of establishing goals to develop effective plans for the organization. 8. Describe ways in which managers can develop and execute effective strategic plans that range from corporate to global in scope. 9. Analyze the decision-making process and examine the importance of each step, from identifying the problem to considering options and selecting a solution. 10. Identify the differences between the vertical and horizontal methods of organization and discuss the advantages and disadvantages in a range of management situations. 11. Examine the challenges of adapting to and managing change for organizations as they strive to achieve their objectives. 12. Discuss the complexities of managing diverse personalities and cultural backgrounds in organizations. 13. Explain the strategic role of human resource management. Cheating, lying, and stealing in any format are honor code violations. Violation of the policy which include academic dishonesty will result in a zero for the assignment and possible failure of the course. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and lying about academic work. A student who submits the work of others, whether in whole or in part, without proper acknowledgement or permission, or who has falsified information within his own work, is in violation of the Honor Code, and is therefore subject to appropriate sanctions resulting from such a violation. The unauthorized use of publisher-supplied materials or websites that require a fee to access which are used or accessed contrary to the copyright and payment of appropriate fees is considered stealing. All instances of suspected honor code violations will be submitted to the Office of the Associate Provost for Student Academic Success. The Honor Code: "As a member of the Catawba College Community, I will uphold the value of academic honesty that grounds our institution, and I will not lie, cheat, or steal." The Pledge: "On my honor, I have not violated the Honor Code in completing this work." Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and lying about academic work. A student who submits the work of others, whether in whole or in part, without proper acknowledgement or permission, or who has falsified information within his own work, is in violation of the Honor Code, and is therefore subject to appropriate sanctions resulting from such a violation. VIII: Attendance Policy: Catawba professors retain the right to fail any student who is absent from 25% of class sessions. This policy is in the college catalog. For this course, missing more than 2.25 classes cumulative can result in a grade of F so being late to class or classes can add up to a missed session. Failure to submit online assignments by the stated due date as part of an online session is considered an absence for that session. Two absences (cumulative) will result in a one letter grade deduction from the final grade after the earned points are calculated. A student who misses MGT2501 Page 4

5 a class bears personal responsibility for completing any material or assignment presented during missed classes (see The Catawba Catalog for details. Each student is personally responsible for checking CATAWBA and visiting Blackboard at least three times a week for changes and updates to assignments. Examples of an absence that will usually be excused for face to face classes: Serious illness or injury requiring you to seek medical care and miss work for more than 48 hours immediately prior to the class or online due date. If you are well enough to go to work, you are well enough to come to class and post your online work. Serious illness/injury of a direct family member (child, parent, sibling) which would cause the caregiver to be unable to attend work for more than 48 hours directly before the due date or class session. Funeral of a direct family member (child or step child, parent, sibling) within 72 hours of the class or online session Military duty Examples of an absence that will NOT be excused for face to face: Weddings including your own Protests, charity and fund-raising events, social or competitive events Work and/or business trips Internet connectivity problems IX: Missed Work Policy: Assignments are to be handed in on the dates specified. Late assignments will be penalized 5 percentage points per day late. Aplia Quizzes are to be taken on the dates scheduled. Late Aplia Quizzes will be penalized by 5 percentage points per day late. X: Electronic Device Policy Students may use laptop computers or pads for note taking. No cell phones or music players may be used during class. All electronic devices are prohibited when taking exams.
