Response Time: Generally, I check my Course Messages in Blackboard twice daily, by 9:00 a.m. and by 5:00 p.m. If I plan to be away from my computer during those times, I will let you know in advance by posting an announcement in Blackboard. Any technical questions can be referred to Blackboard Support. I will update the online grades weekly, at the end of each module typically 2-3 days following the completion of the entire module. You will see a visual indication of new grades posted on your Blackboard home page under the link to this course. Textbook and/or Resource Material Required Text: Eggen, P., & Kauchak. (2016). Educational psychology: Windows on classrooms (10th Ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Merrill. *Please note that this is the etextbook, not the print one. You will have the option to buy or rent it. The etext is available on ipad and Android tablet. It is also available by computer online. 2 Course Description and Prerequisites Survey of major theories emphasizing human growth and development, and motivation and they relate to the teaching and learning process. Includes individual differences as they relate to needs of special learners, and cultural and linguistic differences. Prerequisite: Admission to COE Teacher Education Program CROSSWALK COURSE This course satisfies EDUC Learning Objectives/Outcomes for the Course Student Learning Outcomes 1. The preservice teacher will recognize application of developmental theories to students. 2. The preservice teacher will distinguish varied learner characteristics to better plan instruction. 3. The preservice teacher will discover multiple views of cognition and learning. 4. The preservice teacher will interpret learning motivation under various conditions. 5. The preservice teacher will plan for various methods of classroom management for better teaching environments. 6. The preservice teacher will develop assessments that match learning needs. 7. The preservice teacher will connect learning to the certification standards in human development. 3 System Requirements To participate in this online course, you should have easy access to a computer less than 5-years old with high-speed internet connection via cable modem, LAN or DSL. To ensure you are using a supported browser and have required plug-ins please refer to Supported Browsers, Plugins & Operating Systems for Blackboard Learn from Blackboards resource page. Virus protection UTRGV Software Technical Knowledge Requirements Basic Computer Skills Required You are expected to be proficient in the following basic computer skills: Installing and using basic computer applications Ability to submit and attach documents Keep track of navigation features, and be able to move around in Blackboard Keep track of new tabs or windows that open on your browser when you click certain links. Chapter Review Activities These activities are typically multiple choice to help you review the most important concepts from the readings. Google Plus Community Engagement and discussion in a global stage is far more valuable than a walled garden. What you say and do should make a real world impact, not only for others, but for you, as well. During the semester, you will be joining the Google Plus Community called, Teachers Teaching Today, where you will be interacting with teacher and teachers in training like you to discuss topics, share resources, solve problems, and ask questions. A Google account is required, and an educator related profile should be written. Problem Based Projects These are major projects that require collaboration and several steps to complete. No assignment can be submitted after that, and zero points will be awarded. Module Review Activities = -2 per day it is late (max penalty of -4) Investigative s -2 per day late (max penalty of -4) Solution Presentations = -5 per day it is late (max penalty of -10) This syllabus subject to change in order to better meet course objectives per discretion of instructor. 5

6 Google Plus Community = no late submissions allowed due to the time sensitive nature of the conversation Penalty Points Access Penalty = -1 for each day you don t access the course (must be at least three different days a week: see attendance policy) Google+ Disruption = -2 per instance, for not following instructions for not following the discussion forum schedule of sparks and responses, whether they are early or late Late Penalty = varies per assignments (see Late Policy above) Burning Netiquette = -2 per instance (for not following any of the netiquette rules posted) Distraction Factor = -2 per instance (for not following instructions for assignment guidelines for format or submission) Bonus Points Early Bird = +1 (for early submission [at least 24 hours early] of module review activities) Scout Award = +2 (for helping peers with assignments through the Questions Forum, where the assistance was not a repetition of what someone else had already posted.) Fearless Explorer = +2 (for demonstrating a good attitude and willingness to experiment and explore new technologies, and assisting others with the use of Second Life, Remind, Google + in the Questions Forum) Awesome Factor = +1-3 per instance (for Solution Presentations that go above and beyond the assignment parameters) (see definition of Awesome in this TED Talk by Jill Shargaa here.) Grading Scale This course utilizes the following point scale for final awarding of grades: = A = B = C = D -599 = F It is very important that you understand that for every assignment you do not submit, you lose those points forever. After the late submission grace period of 3 days, you lose your chance to submit an assignment. If you lose 300 or more points before the semester is over, your best option is to drop the class. MANDATORY COURSE EVALUATION PERIOD: Required on all syllabi. Do not modify. Students are required to complete an ONLINE evaluation of this course, accessed through your UTRGV account (My UTRGV Link); you will be contacted through with further instructions. Online evaluations will be available TBA. Students who complete their evaluations will have priority access to their grades. ATTENDANCE: Recommended on all syllabi; may be modified by the instructor as long as it is not inconsistent with UTRGV policy. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes and may be dropped from the course for excessive absences. UTRGV s attendance policy excuses students from attending class if they are participating in officially sponsored university activities, such as athletics; for observance of religious holy days; or for military service. Students should contact the instructor in advance of the excused absence and arrange to make up missed work or examinations. SCHOLASTIC INTEGRITY: Recommended on all syllabi. As members of a community dedicated to Honesty, Integrity and Respect, students are reminded that those who engage in scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and expulsion from the University. Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to: cheating, plagiarism, and collusion; submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person; taking an examination for another person; any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student; or the attempt to commit such acts. Since scholastic dishonesty harms the individual, all students and the integrity of the University, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced (Board of Regents Rules and Regulations and UTRGV Academic Integrity Guidelines). All scholastic dishonesty incidents will be reported to the Dean of Students. SEXUAL HARASSMENT, DISCRIMINATION, and VIOLENCE: Required on all syllabi. Do not modify. In accordance with UT System regulations, your instructor is a responsible employee for reporting purposes under Title IX regulations and so must report any instance, occurring during a student s time in college, of sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, domestic violence, or sexual harassment about which she/he becomes aware during this course through writing, discussion, or personal disclosure. COURSE DROPS: Recommended on all syllabi; may be modified by the instructor as long as it is not inconsistent with UTRGV policy. According to UTRGV policy, students may drop any class without penalty earning a grade of DR until the official drop date. 8 class. Students considering dropping the class should be aware of the 3-peat rule and the 6-drop rule so they can recognize how dropped classes may affect their academic success. The 6-drop rule refers to Texas law that dictates that undergraduate students may not drop more than six courses during their undergraduate career. Courses dropped at other Texas public higher education institutions will count toward the six-course drop limit. The 3-peat rule refers to additional fees charged to students who take the same class for the third time. Course Policies Attendance Policy This online class does have an attendance requirement, but it is measured by access to the Blackboard course and engagement on activities. A total of four absences in any combination listed below will be grounds for getting dropped from the course. You will receive a warning at the third absence recorded, to ensure that the fourth one does not happen. Access Logging in to the course at least three times a week on three different days is mandatory. One absence will be recorded per week where login falls below three times on three different days. Penalty points will be subtracted from your grades for every day you do not login per week, for a maximum of -3 points per week. Engagement Establishing presence biweekly is another way to indicate you are attending and actively engaged with others in the course, including the instructor. Presence should be established weekly so one absence will be recorded per week that presence isn t established (see assignments in previous pages). If a personal emergency, tragedy, or unexpected life event is the cause of your being unable to access or engage in the course, you must notify the instructor within 24 hours, so that alternate arrangements may be made. This is done entirely at the discretion of the instructor, and only if the student gives timely notification. If the student waits longer than a week to notify the instructor, the student may still get an unexcused absence recorded for not being timely in the notification.
