TEACHING August 2016-Present - Design Studies 102 Lecture (Dsn S 102): Design Studio I 4credits - 1 contact hours students This is the lecture component of Dsn S 102. The goal of lecture is to ensure students are provided a theoretical basis for the topics that they are practicing in their designated studios. Created lectures to facilitate discussions on design Principles, Reflection in and on action, Ethics in design leadership and portfolio workshops. Organized and hosted invited guest lecturers. August 2013-Present (F2013, F2014, F2015, S2016, F2017, S2018) - Design 230 (Des 230): Design Thinking: Initiate, think produce, change. 3credits - 3 contact hours students This 3-credit course focuses on helping students understand design thinking and how to apply it. Students have the opportunity to apply new ways of thinking to tackle a wicked problem. A team-based learning approach encourages students to regularly show their process of design, thought process (using the steps of design thinking, from inspiration to refining) and innovation. Students tackle real-life issues with tangible clients and produce a useable product and/or system. This course assumes that all people are naturally creative and just like any other skill, creativity can lie dormant or can be nurtured through an understanding of theory and practice. Created the syllabus, projects and rubrics. August Present - Architecture 201 (Arch 201): Architectural Design I - Present (F2010, F2011, F2012, F2013, F2014, F2015, F2016): 6 credits contact hours students - Field trip. A design worth 6 credit hours focusing on contemporary design and the use of the design process to aid in creating product through building construction and investigation of human habitation. Created the mapping project (2011) and in collaboration with coordinators helped create project statement (2011, 2012) and syllabus. May July Design 340 (Des 340): Design Studio II - Community Awareness through Design 2 credits contact hours students This 2-credit studio exposes students to the reality of community awareness through design by partnering with an entity/organization in the community to create resources, activities and opportunities for the community at large, to engage with that particular 3

4 entity. Research, interviews, design iterations in 2D and 3D end up morphing into an installation and database that the public and the organization have access to. Created the syllabus and projects. January 2014, Mach Design 240 (Des 240): Design Studio I - Words Synthesized in 3D. 2 credits contact hours students This 2-credit studio focuses on the skill of idea generation and small-scale model building. Through a number of readings that focus on research in design, students analyze various words related to design (mainly design principles). Students learn how to create a series of 3D products related to these words and use these various research methodologies to study a particular material (its quality, structural integrity, use, characteristics, etc). The synthesis of the words related to design and the material qualities allows for the creation of more complex 3D systems. Students not only gain an understanding of methods of research and ideation, but also begin to understand the importance of materiality, methods of quick small-scale (sized) construction and how words can be synthesized to aid in the creation of products. Created the syllabus and projects. August May Design Studies 102 (Dsn S 102). 4 credits contact hours students. A design studio, worth 4 credit hours focusing on general design principles of design arenas including architecture, landscape architecture, community and regional planning, fine arts, graphic design and interior design. Topics covered include two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, the creative process, materiality, visual order and the significance of context (cultural) in design. Created a guideline for a syllabus, graded projects and created a grading rubric for the project, organized reviews and advised students. August December Design Studies 230X (Dsn S 230X): Design Thinking: Initiate, think produce, change. 3credits - 3 contact hours students. As previously described (August 2013-present) January May 2001 & January 2011-May Architecture 202 (Arch 202): Architectural Design II 6 credits contact hours students. Students investigate the condition of an urban environment. The develop designs based on location, scale, history and that make sense in an urban landscape. Helped brainstorm and create projects dealing with scale (2011). August May University Studies 105 (U St 105): Carver Academy Seminar: Freshmen. 1 credit - 3 contact hours students. A 1-credit course that helps students of color adjust to their collegiate environment. The first-year level course includes an introduction to university life and readings that prepare students to be successful scholars. - University Studies 205 & 206 (U St 205 & 206): Carver Academy Seminar: Peer Mentors 1 credit - 3 contact hours students. A 1-credit course that covers topics on leadership development in diverse populations. This course required the development of a new syllabus, was reorganized on WebCT, with discussion boards and journal entries. - University Studies 305 & 306 (U St 305): Carver Academy Seminar: Scholars 1 credit - 3 contact hours students. 4

5 A 1-credit course that covers topics on research, ethical dilemmas in research and the preparation of Caver Academy Scholars for career placement and graduate school. August December Design Studies 102 (Dsn S 102): Design Studio I. 4 credits contact hours students. As previously described (Aug May 2013). August May Architecture 102 (Arch 102): Pre-Architecture Design. 4 credits contact hours students. This course was worth 4 credit hours, focusing on the principles of architecture and creative design, including three dimensional design, drawing, precedent study, form, space and materiality. Created a guideline from the provided syllabus, graded projects and organized reviews. - Design Studies 102 (Dsn S 102): Design Studio I 4 credits contact hours students. This course was just implemented to replace any first-year design studio course that was specific to any design field (described above: Aug May 2013). August May Design Studies 110 & 111 (Dsn S 110 & 111): Design Exchange Seminar I & II 1 credit - 1 contact hour 120 students. This seminar provided guidance to 120 design students from a variety of design majors, who were seeking to apply into their professional program. Helped develop a syllabus in collaboration with the peer mentors and co-coordinator. The syllabus covered issues such as critical thinking, goal setting and being successful in college. Organized an array of social activities that correlated to the topics covered in the course work. August May Architecture 102 (Arch 102): Pre-Architecture Design 4 credits contact hours students. Previously described (August May 2004) EXTENSION July 2013, 2014, 2015, Explore Design! in 3D and Design Innovation. (No credits or course number- Extension activity) students - Field trips. A 2-day or 1-week Summer course where students in Middle school and High school learn; about three-dimensional design principles, the different techniques of threedimensional production, how to use design tools and media appropriately, depending on the idea being explored, how to work from two-dimensional ideas, to produce threedimensional iterations, how to translate ideas (concepts) into reality, the importance of presentation (verbal, physical and written), how to work quickly, yet carefully, to produce a desired three-dimensional result. Created lesson plans for students. June/July 2011& 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015: - Design Condensed/Core Condensed- 2-D to 3-D Charrettes and Transformations. Outreach (0 credits)- 10 contact hours students. A summer camp for high school students that introduces students to the College of Design at Iowa State University. In collaboration with 3 other professors, we were able to design an intensive studio environment that gives the students a strong design 5

6 experience that will become the basis for their college education. After an experimental basis, in the first year (2011) our proposal was accepted again for the next year and the name changed from Design Condensed to Core Condensed. In the 3D portion of the camp, students investigate 3D design principles and recycle materials to build iterations describing their design principles. Brainstormed with colleagues, about different methods to approach the camp. Designed a 1-week and 2-week lesson plan to address the objectives of the session. - Research on learner-centered education in architecture and Higher Education.
