1 AOFAQ Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (QCF) National Qualification Number: TBA Qualification specification Qualification Overview The AOFAQ Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (QCF) has been accredited by the regulators of England and Wales (Ofqual and the Welsh Government) and is part of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The qualification is aimed at all employees whether new starters, currently in employment or seeking work. The purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge to identify workplace hazards and contribute to the positive health and safety culture within the workplace. The qualification contains subjects which are essential in maintaining a safe working environment. The qualification also provides a demonstration of the employer s commitment to fulfil their legal obligation to provide training to its employees. The qualification is suitable for ages 14+ and there are no pre requisites to attend the course. Guided Learning Hours: 10 The number of tutor- led contact hours required to support learner achievement of a unit/module or qualification. Credit value: 1 Qualification Structure This qualification is made up of one unit and in the table below the learning outcomes and assessment criteria are detailed showing what method of assessment will be used to achieve each one. 3 Learner Entry Requirements None are required to access this qualification. Learner ID Requirements Centres must instruct each learner to bring identification and this must be validated by the trainer and recorded on the Learner Assessment Logbook. Also, centres must advise learners to bring their Unique Learner Number to the course if they have one. Further guidance on this can be found in the D13 manual. It is the responsibility of the trainer to ensure learners undertaking the qualification are indeed the person they are claiming to be. Assessment The course is assessed through multiple choice questions via a Learner Assessment Logbook which is downloaded from the AoFAQ s Training Manager. The learner must correctly answer 20 or more questions out of 30 in order to be awarded the qualification. Learners will pass or fail the course. Successful Learners receive a National Qualification Certificate. This qualification is valid for 3 years. In order to re- qualify after 3 years, Learners must be assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria. Further guidance on assessment requirements can be found in the D13 manual. Internal Quality Assurers Centres are required to have Internal Quality Assurers to sample the work of trainers. This must be clearly documented and will be monitored by AoFAQ. Further guidance is available from AoFAQ on the role of Internal Quality Assurers. 4 Useful websites: Occupational Competence Requirements AOFAQ recognises the variety of qualifications available. In order to deliver this course, the tutor must have a teaching qualification and/or teaching experience and a suitable qualification in the field of health and safety. Tutors must maintain their own continued personal development to ensure subject currency. Acceptable teaching/ training qualifications: The tutor must hold one of the following: Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Certificate in Education (CERT ED) Diploma in Education (DIP ED) Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector (PTLLS) Certificate in teaching in the lifelong learning sector (CTLLS) Diploma in teaching in the lifelong learning sector (DTLLS) Master of Arts in Education (MA ED) Master of Arts in Professional Development, Education and Training (MA PDET) Professional trainer certificate IHCD Instructional methods course Level 3 or 4 NVQ Learning and Development CIPD Certificate in Learning Practice Proof of 30 hours of training in any subject (must be verifiable) If your teaching or training qualification is not listed, please contact us. Acceptable subject knowledge qualifications may include: The tutor must hold one of the following: Level 3 or 4 in Supervising/Managing Health and Safety in the Workplace NEBOSH Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health IOSH Managing Safely Degree/ Dip HE in Environmental Health, Health and Safety etc Any other qualification approved by AOFAQ No formal Trainer/Assessor qualifications It is recognised that trainer/assessors may not hold formal qualifications but may have significant experience in undertaking these roles. It is expected that the trainer/assessors be registered and working towards formal qualifications within one year and that the qualifications are gained within two years. During this period a portfolio should be maintained and include details of knowledge and experience gained and the time period over which they were applied, and any contributing training undertaken and the learning outcomes achieved. There should be evidence that the AoFAQ Issue 1.0 Page 4 of 5

5 individual has conducted at least two theoretical Health and Safety training sessions under the supervision of a qualified trainer. Internal Quality Assurers must: Be occupationally competent in the area of health and safety. This can be evidenced by: Meeting the criteria listed for the trainer Have working knowledge of the requirements of the qualification they are quality assuring at the time any assessment is being undertaken Have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the role of assessors Visit and observe assessments and carry out other related internal quality assurance Note: It is understood that not all IQA s will be qualified initially, and that sufficient time should be considered to achieve these qualifications. During this time centres should ensure that IQA s are following the principles set out in the current Learning and Development NOS 11 Internally Monitor and Maintain the Quality of Assessment. This could be evidenced by holding a qualification such as: SQA Accredited Learning and Development Unit 11 Internally Monitor and Maintain the Quality of Workplace Assessment QCF Qualifications based on the Learning and Development NOS 11 Internally Monitor and Maintain the Quality of Assessment Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice (QCF) Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice (QCF) V1 or D34 Note: This list is not exhaustive.
