Kennedy School of Government Present Research My research examines, from social psychological perspectives, the functioning of pluralistic collectives (societies, organizations, and groups) and the leadership challenges, and opportunities, that pluralism represents. The cross-level view of collective life I am developing considers diversity as a feature of individuals, rather than a feature of groups, and examines the mechanisms through which complex and multi-faceted individuals can come together to create and maintain cohesive collectives, while retaining their individuality and self-complexity: pluralistic possibilities. I use quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in the laboratory and the field. Much of my current research focuses on a particular foundation component of the larger project: examining individual membership in multiple social identity groups, and uncovering how and when different identity group memberships become meaningful to individuals, and the individual and collective outcomes identity salience spawns.
