1 MimioTraining Core Skills Course description: This course focuses on utilizing interactive teaching technologies effectively in the classroom. It offers Mimio advocates opportunities to collaborate and share new and innovative ideas with their peers. The course also provides the foundation for the follow-on course, Mimio Advanced Skills. Course objectives: The goal of this course is to offer participants a broad overview of how to successfully integrate Mimio interactive teaching technologies into everyday teaching. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the various components of Mimio hardware and software. 2. Use the tools available within MimioStudio classroom software to create interactive learning activities. 3. Develop small-group and whole-group activities using MimioStudio Notebook as the delivery system. 4. Navigate and add content to the MimioStudio Gallery to contribute to lesson development. 5. Add pre-existing content to MimioStudio Notebook to enhance lesson development. 6. Share ideas and teaching resources with other course participants. Methodology: This course is taught through an assortment of readings, videos, assignments, discussions, assessments, and live online sessions. All materials are available in the Blackboard Learn course shell. Participants must have a computer with Internet access to be able to access Blackboard. We will send participants a username/password in the course orientation at the beginning of the course. At that time, they will be able to access the Week 1 Orientation at The Orientation will provide training on Blackboard s various features. The remaining modules of the Core Skills course can be accessed at the same URL. Time frame: The course is split into five modules to be completed over a five-week period, one module per week. Participants can expect to spend a minimum of 7 hours per week on the course. Each week of the course runs from Sunday to Sunday. The course site will be available to participants on the Sunday before the start of the course. Note: This is not a self-paced course. New topics are introduced each week with associated readings, discussions, videos, assignments, assessments, and a live online session. It is critical that participants schedule a minimum of 7 hours for the course on a weekly basis. Textbooks: There are no required textbooks. 2 Course Policies and Procedures Successful online student/participant: It takes great effort to be a successful online student. You must be self-motivated and self-disciplined to keep on schedule with readings, videos, assignments, discussions, and assessments. Communication is key: It is very important that class members stay connected with the course, their classmates, and the instructor. Participants may use , the discussion board, and/or the live online session to convey any questions. The power of this online course is a direct result of the community atmosphere. Meeting dates: The live online sessions are generally held on Monday evenings (7:30 PM - 8:30 PM EDT or EST, whichever applies). However, individual course moderators reserve the right to change the meeting day/time at their discretion. Recordings of each meeting are made available immediately at the conclusion of the session. A summary of the meeting is required for those that are unable to attend the live session. Working ahead: All of the readings, videos, assignments, discussions, and assessments will be open each week on Sunday morning. The weekly survey will be open on Thursday of each week. Participants should feel free to work ahead during the week, if desired. Netiquette: All course participants are expected to follow rules of common courtesy in all messages, discussion boards, and live online sessions. Mimio wants every participant to be comfortable throughout the course; Mimio reserves the right to remove any participants from the course, without refund, if their conduct is determined to be inappropriate. Responding to The instructor will check daily and strive to respond to course-related s within 24 hours. Announcements: Participants are responsible for checking the announcements each time they log into the course. All important reminders, updates, questions and answers, etc. are posted there. If a student happens to miss any announcements, they can always be found under the "View Last 7 Days" or "View Last 30 Days" tabs. Late work: All assignments, discussion board posts, and assessments are due on Sunday night. If a participant misses a live online session, he or she is required to watch the recorded session, write a brief summary, and then the summary to the instructor to receive credit. Participants have a maximum of one week at the conclusion of the course to hand in late work for credit. Once that week has passed, the course is closed, all grades are final, and no late will work will be accepted. Feedback on assignment submissions: Participants should check for feedback on the graded assignments in the Gradebook by clicking the "View Comments" link. Grades on assignments, discussions, assessments, live online session participation, etc. are posted as soon as possible. 3 Cancellation and drop-out policy: A full refund or credit to your PO will be provided if you cancel prior to one week of the course start date. There will be no refund for cancellations within one week of the posted start date or when dropping out, once the course has started. If participants cancel or drop out during this time, they will be required to register and pay the entrance fee again to participate in a later session. No-shows: Registered participants that do not show up for the course will not receive a refund and will be required to register and pay the entrance fee again to participate in a later session. All moderators will reach out via a maximum of five times for those that do not log into the course during the first week. Moving to another session: Participants can move to another session prior to one week of the course start date. If movement is requested within one week of the course start date or once the course has started, participants must register and pay the entrance fee again to participate in a later course. Most communication between the moderator and participants is conducted via . It is recommended that participants use a personal to register, as many school-based accounts will block mimio.com extensions. 6 Evaluation Criteria: To provide each participant with an authentic online student experience, course activities are graded. Participants will need to submit all work and achieve an overall score of 85% or higher to receive a certificate of completion. If both requirements are not completed, participants will not receive a certificate of completion and will be required to register and pay the entrance fee in order to participate again. Discussion board postings: 20% (5 points each, 20 points total) Sharing information leads to new ideas and is the best way for participants to learn from each other. To that end, each week s module has an associated discussion forum. Participants post a response to a forum question, and start conversations with their peers. Points are earned for responding to each discussion forum and for replying to fellow participants. Up to 5 points will be earned for each week s responses. The goal of the discussion forum is to develop dialogue between participants. Participants respond to each discussion question no later than Thursday of each week, and respond to at least two other class members postings by the Sunday ending the week. Participants are encouraged to respond to more than two other postings and to learn from each other. Note that no points will be earned for discussion responses posted after the week ends. Points will be earned for discussion postings as follows: 1 Point: Minimal responses to the questions. 3 Points: The postings are responses to the questions but lack depth and do not attempt to be part of a class-wide conversation. 5 Points: Substantive responses that are insightful and encourage conversation. 7 Points will be earned for assignments as follows: Full credit: The requirements for each individual assignment are indicated within the assignment description on the Blackboard Learn course shell. You will receive full credit for the assignment if the requirements are met. Partial credit: Based on the requirements provided for each assignment, the moderator will give partial credit at their discretion. Feedback will be provided for the chance to edit and resubmit the assignment by the end of the week. You may check feedback on the graded assignments in their gradebook by clicking the "View Comments" link if you did not receive full credit. No credit: If you receive no credit for the assignment, you will receive feedback and have the chance to resubmit the assignment by the end of the week. Assessments: 20% (20 Points total) After Participants complete the work for each week, they take the associated assessment. They are allowed to use notes or other materials to complete the assessment. Weekly assessments are 10 questions each, with a total of 40 questions for all four assessments. Each question is worth 0.5 points. The assessments contain a mixture of true/false, multiple choice, and multiple answer questions. Each assessment is due at the end of the week. Live Online Sessions: 20% (5 points each, 20 points total) Each week there will be a live online session that participants are expected to attend. In the event of an absence Participants will need to watch the recording of the session and a short paragraph summarizing what was learned.
