2 (13) 1 Introduction This document outlines the process for developing mobile learning course content and should be used in conjunction with Adapting elearning and ILT Materials to mlearning document 1.1 Terminology Within this document, the following terms will frequently be used: LPD (Learning Product Development Tool) is a tool for development of learning products and gives support to Sponsors, Developers, Project Managers, Market Introduction Managers and Deployment Managers. LPD is owned by Ericsson Education at Global Services and supported by Product Management for Education within Advise. For an overview of LPD, (internal Ericsson Document) LCMS (Learning Content Management System) is a tool used in all learning product development projects. It is used both during the actual learning product development as well as providing the database for all learning material. In Ericsson, the LCMS tool used is Learn exact. The elearning domain is used for all elearning Product Development. LMS (Learning Management System) is an information system that administers instructor-led training and web-based learning and keeps track of student progress. In Ericsson the LMS system used is mylearning. 1.2 Learning Content Management System (LCMS) Introduction Ericsson uses Sumtotal s Learning Management System to store, schedule and support training delivery. In tandem it also employs a Learning Content Management System (LCMS) from Giunti Labs. The LCMS allows the user to create and author courses. The LCMS facilitates the collaboration of several different authors on any given course. In addition, the components that make up a course can be centralized and shared across multiple courses. This tool allows developers to bundle learning objects together to create a course; a learning object is defined as any training-related content stored in the system. For example, a learning object can be a single image depicting a network diagram, or could equally represent an entire module of a course. 2
3 (13) SCORM is used to tag training content in the LCMS, regardless of content type. For example, an Instructor-led (ILT) course has associated slides and student text books that need to be tagged and stored. It is also used to structure metadata and modules for reuse. The metadata that is applied to content must be highly structured and clearly laid out. For example, each content area is tagged, within that individual modules are tagged, and so on down to individual elements such as an assessment, diagram, audio file and so on. 3
4 (13) 2 Creating Course Content In the LCMS, correctly tagged content is identified and grouped according to the needs of the audience at hand. A course developer bundles all of the resources in the system into a session which is then itself edited to insert metadata describing various aspects of the delivery. This metadata can include information about the subject area, the target audience, learning objectives and so on. It is also possible to add metadata for each individual element in the session this is useful for example where you need to describe an individual animation or graphic in more detail. The level of tracking of the session is also set at this point; individual files can be tracked if required.. Pages A Page is a container of Templates. It may occur at root level (i.e. inside the Container but outside a Level) or inside a Level. Page outside a Level: right click on the Container and select Add Page from the contextual menu. Page inside a Level: right click on the Level and select Add Page from the contextual menu. You can give a title to the Page by typing it in the Name field of the Properties pane. This name will appear in the course s table of contents. A Page may contain one or more Templates. Templates The Template is the lowest level of granularity: it shapes and organizes the learning content. Each Template contains a predefined set of items which helps creating the course. To use a Template you need at least a Page element. Right click on Page and choose a Template from the contextual menu to attach it to your Page. If you need a Page with multiple Templates, repeat this step for every Template you want to attach to your Page. You can give a title to the Template by typing the text in the Name field of the Properties pane. This name will appear in course Table of Contents. 4
5 (13) Glossary The Glossary element is a dictionary of recurring or relevant terms. You can index in the Glossary all the keywords of your learning course and their definition for a quick reference. To add a term in the Glossary right click on the Glossary element and select Add Term from the contextual menu. Credits The Credits element allows publishing the name of working team members or other corporate information. The Credits element is not a packager element, but an external file that you must upload from your file system to the course container. 5
6 (13) 3. Shaping the content: Template basics Template Properties Click on Template s name to display his settings in the Properties pane. The available settings for each template may vary according to Template s purpose, structure or child elements. Text Elements In the GLREV model all text elements are identical. They may have different names (e.g. Overview, Instruction, Feedback) and layout option according to the function they play in the Template, but the basic properties are always the same. 6
7 (13) 4. Creating a Mobile Course using Ericsson Course LO By the use of the Packager and the Ericsson Mobile Course LO Templates it is possible to create and/or modify a course with the following content structure: COURSE CHAPTER 1 PAGE 1.1 PAGE 1.2 PAGE 1.3 CHAPTER 2 PAGE 2.1 PAGE 2.2 PAGE 2.3 The first step to create an Ericsson Mobile Course is to create a new Packager Project. You are strongly suggested to create a different project for each Ericsson Mobile course. To create a new project: Open the Packager Insert domain, host information, your username and password, then click on the Login button (login information are only requested at first access; next time Packager login mask will be filled in with all correct information). Click on File > New. A window is opened: Creating and configuring a Chapter An Ericsson mobile Course basically consists in a sequence of Chapters, each one based on a sequence of Pages. When you create a new Ericsson Mobile LO the following default structure is displayed in the Learning Object window. The Title of the Chapter is defined by the Name parameter (in the Properties Area). To add a new Page, right-click on the Chapter element and select one between: Add LOWelcome Add LOText Add LOGraphic Add LOBullettedList Add LODragDrop 7

The available settings for each template may vary according to Template s purpose, structure or child elements. Text Elements In the GLREV model all text elements are identical. They may have different names (e.g. Overview, Instruction, Feedback) and layout option according to the function they play in the Template, but the basic properties are always the same. To enter a text in a Text element, double click the element in the Learning Object pane and type it in the preview pane: 10
11 (13) 6 Reusability of Resources across Different Content Types There are two main ways in which content from elearning and ILT courses can be reused or adapted to mobile learning content: 1. Common Resources - In this scenario the same resource store is used in an elearning course as is used in mlearning content development. This approach needs to be carefully managed as the mobile templates do not allow for the use of Flash content, and there are limitations on screen size for all type of resources, with the exception of text. 2. Resource redevelopment - In this scenario you use a mix of existing resources and redeveloped resources; redeveloping a resource in this context refers to altering it specifically for the mobile template. An example of this would be to resize or reduce the quality of an image file so it will fit on a smaller screen, rather than scaling it down in the mobile course. 11
12 (13) 7 mlearning Development and Review The developer will download the skeleton course from the Working Area on the mlearning domain to their PC as a starting point for course development. They will proceed with the course development. The mlearning product is to be reviewed by select Ericsson SMEs or Ericsson Technical resources and Ericsson storyboard developer 1. The course developer will publish the course to LCMS in their Working Area for proper version control. 2. The project manager will distribute the review instructions to the SME s. 3. The SME will download the mobile content from the appropriate working area on Lobster to their local Packager application. The mobile content will be previewed using the Mobile Emulator. (Alternatively the.jar file can be distributed to the SME s to load directly to their mobile phones.) 4. All new comments should be submitted to the project manager. 5. The project manager will collate and document the review comments for the developer. 6. The project manager will be responsible for providing any updates to the developer. The course should be completed with required features as outlined in the mlearning Main requirement specification document and the mlearning Design Instructions document Adapting elearning and ILT materials to mlearning The procedure for Review will be repeated until the mlearning course passes the content review. The external mlearning supplier should have a test plan for the mlearning product. Once product testing is completed the test plan should be made available to the Project Manager. A non-technical reviewer will also review the course to ensure the course container meets required standards as per guidelines. The course learning objectives approved in the 1550 must be met in the course. Note that generally the final voice/audio is added to a mlearning course after the complete content has been approved. A final review may need to be planned to review the final audio. The Project Manager will update and finalize the Customer Learning Product Description, The Metadata will be updated by the Project manager, as defined in the LCMS metadata.xls 12
13 (13) 8 Publishing the mlearning course The course should be moved from the elearning Domain to the production Domain. It is the responsibility of the Project Manager to request removal of the Working Area and the users created for development of this project. The product is now ready to be delivered to the Product Manager/Sponsor. 13
