VMWare Player Will be used to create a second instance of MySQL server. Your laptop must be powerful enough to run VMWare Player/Ubuntu. Course Prerequisite MIS2000: Systems Analysis and Design or CET3500 Software Engineering Design YOU CANNOT RECEIVE CREDIT TOWARD GRADUATION FOR BOTH ITC 2300 and ITC 3001 and ITC 3020 Course Description Topics include designing normalized data tables for use in a relational database management system, creating entity-relationship models, database transaction processing and security. Introduces Structured Query Language (SQL). Student Learning Objectives Upon completion the course, students will have had the opportunity to: Identify the data domain and appropriate data elements for an unstructured problem Discuss the concepts of data integrity, redundancy and integrity within a problem context. Model data to third normal form using recognized Entity-Relationship Diagram conventions Create SQL queries that address an information need using simple table joins and filtering techniques. Build a working application in Oracle s MySQL Workbench/Server environment Apply transaction management and concurrency concepts to a data problem scenario Describe data security threats and recommend appropriate security/backup procedures 1

2 Describe the concepts and tools used for Business Intelligence. Expectations Workload o One (1) academic credit requires 50 minutes a week of classroom or faculty instruction and about two hours of out of class student work for a 15 week course; 100 minutes a week of classroom or direct faculty instruction and about 3.5 hours of out of class student work for a 7.5 week course. o For a three credit course, students should expect 2.5 hours a week of classroom or faculty instruction and a minimum of 5 hours of out of class student work for a 15 week course. Attendance Policy Class participation represents 10% of the final grade. Excused absences are permitted. Otherwise, students are expected to attend all five in class meetings. Policy on late work o Late assignments will AUTOMATICALLY receive half credit. o On ground classes: Assignments are due during the first half hour of class on the due date. (If class begins at 9:30am, you have until 10:00am to hand the assignment in before it is considered late) o Online classes: Each assignment is due at 11:59 pm EST of the date indicated. o If you are absent when an assignment is due, the assignment must still meet the deadline or suffer the penalty of being late. o No make up work (homework, discussion board posts, quizzes, etc) will be permitted. o Extra credit assignments are not available. Course Methodology Each week, you will be expected to: 1. Review the week's learning objectives. 2. Complete all assigned readings. 3. Complete all lecture materials for the week. 4. Participate in the Discussion Board. 5. Complete and submit all assignments and tests by the due dates. For each Coronel chapter assigned there will be a short online multiple choice quiz based on the reading. All quizzes will be untimed (you can start and stop then as many times as necessary before your final submission), multiple-choice and they will all be open notes and open book. The SQL component will be hands-on using MySQL workbench. All ERD diagrams will be drawn in the MySQL workbench environment. Participation/Discussion Board Participation is Discussion Board questions is an essential part of your learning experience. As written in the Grading section of this syllabus, active participation through written responses to 2

3 Discussion Board "prompts" will earn 10% of your final grade. When fellow students post to the Discussion Board, interaction by other students is desirable and if I can be helpful, I will also participate. Each week you are expected to respond to one of several questions that will be posted. You are also expected to reply to at least two posts by other students. Please try and provide you initial response by Wednesday as this will allow everyone time to post a reply. The discussion board will be closed at midnight each Sunday. Attach your completed assignments here and click Submit to turn them in to me. Once your assignment has been graded, you will be able to view the grade and feedback I have provided by clicking on My Grades in the Tools module from the Northeastern University Online Campus tab.
