1 KARNATAKA STATE COUNCIL FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Indian Institute of Science Campus, Bangalore REPORT ON 37 th SERIES of STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAMME (SPP) Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), set up in 1975, is an autonomous registered organization of Government of Karnataka. The Council receives a grant-in-aid from the Government of Karnataka. The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, also extends partial financial support to the Council. The Council s main mission is to promote the application of science and technology to the developmental process in Karnataka. To accomplish this mission, the State Council works with the support of a 50-member council, presided by the Hon ble Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka and an Executive Committee whose Chairman is the Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. In both of these bodies, there is representation of ministers, state government officials and scientists / engineers from various educational and R&D institutions in the state. KSCST uses its funds to sponsor projects in the educational, scientific and technological institutions in Karnataka. The Council took up several projects in the areas of Education, Energy, Building, Health, Urban Systems, Ecology and Environment, Chemical Processes etc. The Council is more particular about education sector and wants to improve the quality of education as well as to bring in many young budding students into the science/engineering stream. STUDENT PROJECT PROGRAMME (SPP) In order to improve the quality of engineering education, the Council embarked upon a major venture - the Student Project Programme (SPP) - to select good student projects in various disciplines from various engineering colleges, fund them and provide technical support. The Student Project Programme is one of the important programmes of the KSCST; it involves students and faculty of engineering colleges in taking up projects oriented towards developmental problems of the state and coming out with practical solutions, more specifically, those relevant to rural areas. The Student Project Programme (SPP) was initiated during and has undergone substantial qualitative and quantitative improvements over the last three decades. The Student Project Programme has, by now, stimulated a large number of students and faculty to think about the problems of their immediate surroundings and to use their knowledge and training to improve their environment. This process has been ably assisted by more than one hundred faculty members of the Indian 24
2 Institute of Science and experts from various other research institutions and government departments. Engineering colleges of the State have shown keen interest in this novel programme. The Student Project Programme of KSCST has attracted the attention of educationists and technologists in the entire country. The objectives are: Apply creativity of students to solve development problems of our people and State through Science and Technology. Enrich college education by taking up small projects to evolve solutions to real life problems. Improve understanding and develop methodology for solving complex issues. The work discipline acquired by students in evolving and executing their projects, improves their analytical and technical capabilities and methodology, enabling better performance at job interviews, besides getting a formal certificate of recognition. The sponsorship, by Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology, has become a benchmark of quality for engineering student projects and these projects have been highly valued by both academic and industrial communities. In this programme, several completed projects are identified as promising and having commercial potential. Concerned faculty/students of such projects are encouraged to go ahead for further modification wherever required and to takeup field trials or scale up. Projects have been diverse, reflecting the varied interests of the students/guides and some of them have been very innovative. The recent enhancement of financial support by the state government has enabled us to support several such innovative projects and some of these projects have received wide publicity in local as well as national media. 37 th Series of Student Project Programme (SPP) : SPP, when started in the year , supported 81 projects, from 13 institutions. Now, during the 37 th Series ( ) of this program, the Council received 1438 project proposals from 110 institutions and 371 projects have been supported with a total funding of about Rs lakhs. So far, over 7000 projects have been supported by the KSCST under this programme during last 36 years. The activities of 37 th Series of SPP started in October The Council contacted experts from Indian Institute of Science and various R&D institutions in identifying thrust areas for selection of student projects. As per the recommendations of the subject experts and approval by Secretary, KSCST, SPP poster was printed in A3 size which displayed information about the thrust areas for this series. 25
3 Following are thrust areas recommended by the experts for student projects. Mechanisms / machines for Garbage disposal specially in the urban environment, Drainage cleaning, Weed removal in lakes, Waste processing and wealth from waste Micro Air Vehicle, Smart Technology for physically challenged Mobile driven technology for water supply, irrigation, etc. Automobile exhaust control Greenhouse gas mitigation, Techniques in Air pollution control Application of Electrostatics, Electrostatic Hazards Material processing, aero space materials Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) Experimental fluid mechanics Solar thermal energy devices Self powered electronics Health monitoring systems Low power embedded system Efficient, swift fire fighting/extinguishing gadgets Projects to combat local problems encountered in your region Any other innovative projects SPP poster contains, in addition to thrust areas, format of the proposal and other relevant details. Posters were sent to all the engineering colleges of the State and Universities, indicating last date for submission of the project proposals. The Council received 1438 project proposals (Annexure 1) from various disciplines from 110 institutions in the State. These proposals were scrutinized by experts from Indian Institute of Science and other R&D institutions. After rigorous processing of the project proposals and evaluation by experts, 371 proposals from 110 engineering colleges were supported and sponsored with a total financial assistance of about Rs Lakhs. Project sanction letters and budget sanction details were sent to the concerned project guides and Principals of the engineering colleges. Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board (KSBDB), Government of Karnataka also supported 50 projects with a special sanction on biofuel projects. This was in addition to assistance provided by the Council. Approved list of projects, 26
4 sanctioned directly under SPP and Biofuel Projects under KSBDB, were announced in KSCST website KSCST has organized nodal centre evaluation of the supported projects at following engineering colleges namely : SL.
