Rationale for the Course The textile industry contributes about 14 percent to industrial production and four percent to the gross domestic product (GDP). It is second largest industry in the country in terms of employment generation and world s second largest producer of textiles and garments. Our country has the potential to increase its textile and apparel share in the world trade from the current level of 4.5 percent to eight percent and reach US$ 80 billion by The industry requires more sewing machine operators and quality controllers. About 30% of the readymade garments of the country are manufactured in Bangalore. Out of 2066 active garment manufacturing units in Bangalore, almost 900+ units are placed in Directorate of Training & Lifelong Learning Page 2 of 103
3 Peenya industrial area itself. Many of the sewing operator professionals have become entrepreneurs to enjoy their career and flexi lifestyle. There is tremendous potential for professionals in sewing operation and quality control, as the market is evergreen, growing and developing at a fast pace. At MSRUAS, we teach fashion as a curriculum loaded with aspects of Garment Manufacturing and Quality Control. The cognitive and learning ability will be harnessed with both theoretical and practical approaches. 10. Course Aim The aim of the course is to create professionals who can efficiently manufacture quality garments to meet the requirements of customers 11. Course Objectives The objectives of the course are: 1. To impart knowledge on general education including physics, chemistry, economics, sociology, environmental studies, statistics and computer applications 2. To impart knowledge on managerial subjects and general subjects like principles of management, accountancy, customer relationship, operations management, behavioral skills, communication skills, legal aspects and human rights for successful operation of garment business 3. To impart skills to operate and maintain sewing machines for garment manufacturing 4. To assess and evaluate the quality of garment 5. 4 12. Intended Learning Outcomes of the Course The Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) are listed under three headings: 1. Knowledge and Understanding 2. Practical Skills and 3. Capability/Transferable Skills Knowledge and Understanding After undergoing this course, the student will be able to : 1. Explain the principles involved in general education 2. Describe the various tools and techniques used in garment manufacturing and quality control 12.2 Practical Skills 3. Perform simple statistical analysis involved in garment manufacturing and quality control 4. Read and interpret various safety regulations, labor laws connected with garment Industry After undergoing this course, the student will be able to : 1. Operate and maintain sewing machines and its attachments 2. Practice construction of various components of garments 3. Practice various techniques of pattern making and garment construction 4. Apply product development and quality control norms 12.3 Capability/Transferable Skills After undergoing this course, the student will be able to : 1. Develop a project report to set up modern garment manufacturing unit 2. Manage operations, finances, accounting and tax calculations 3. Build team, manage team and Communicate effectively with suppliers and customers 4. Use modern ICT tools for efficient operation of the garment business 13. Course Structure A student is required to successfully complete the following modules for the award of the degree. The course is delivered as per the Time Table for every batch. 8 14. Delivery Structure The course is in a semester pattern with an average of 30 hours of interactions per week and 15 weeks per semester 15. Teaching and Learning Methods The module delivery comprises of a combination of few or all of the following: 1. Face to Face Lectures using Audio Visuals 2. Demonstrations 3. Laboratory/Field work/workshop 4. Industry Visit 5. Group Exercises 6. Project Exhibitions 7. Technical Festivals 16. Assessment and Grading 17. Failure 18. Attendance 19. Award of Class Each module is assessed for a total of 100 marks with two tests each of 25 marks and a final examination of 50 marks for general education modules and similar pattern is followed for vocational based modules with emphasis on skills. A candidate is required to score a minimum of 40% overall in each of the modules. If a student fails in a module, he/she is required to take up the make up examination. A student is required to have a minimum attendance of 75% in each of the modules. As per the Academic Regulations for Vocational Programme. 20. Student Support for Learning Student are given the following support: 1. Module notes 2. Reference books in the library 3. Magazines and Journals 4. Internet facility 5. Computing facility 6.
