7 Information retrieval as a process from topic to terms Searching is a process 1. Topic -> concepts-> words/terms (also synonyms) 2. Suitable databases 3. Search query: how to combine 4. Conducting searches 5. Evaluating search results 6. Locating the publications 7

8 Formulating a search query How to use the search terms? Conducting searches truncate when necessary asthma, asthmatic asthma* surgery, surgical surg* ethics, ethical ethic* retina, retinal retina* use Boolean logic to combine logically 8

9 A A A B B B Boolean logic A OR B either A or B or both antiasthmatics OR anti-asthmatic agents A AND B both A and B asthma AND drug therapy A NOT B A but not B asthma NOT exercixe-induced When combined with OR, one term is enough but also all can exist in the reference to be included in the results. The more Ors, the more results. Use with synonyms, close terms, related terms, different spellings. OR expands. The references must contain all the terms. The more ANDs, the less results. AND aikkien hakusanojen pitää olla viitteissä. Mitä enemmän ANDoperaattoreita, sen vähemmän tuloksia. AND reduces. Use carefully! References that have the term are excluded from the results. NOT removes. NOT reduces but in a different way than AND. 9

10 Boolean logic using brackets asthma* AND child* (treatment OR therapy) asthma* AND child* OR ( drug therapy OR pharmacotherapy) If the search query is formed with both AND and OR operators, brackets are needed. Use quotation marks with phrases = search terms that are combinations of two or more words. 10

11 Don t forget to document your searches Keep the search queries you used Print or save the search history You don t have to start afresh, if you have to go back to your searches, e.g. to find more or to check if there s something new or to modify it or to show it to the editor, council, professor, evaluator, funder 11

15 RefWorks Online, browser-based reference management software Import search results from databases into RefWorks Insert references in your manuscript, then print out your finished text with citations and bibliography in chosen style Campus license for students and staff allows you to use RefWorks even after studies or employment in UEF commercial use prohibited 15

17 Terms of use of electronic collections The license agreements define the terms of use for each resource and all users of the resources and the library are required to comply with the terms. Descriptions of the resources and their terms of use can be viewed in the Nelli portal by clicking the i-icon next to each resource. General terms of use You are allowed to browse the resources and make searches print your search results on paper or save them on a file in moderate amounts for your own non-commercial study or research purposes print on paper or save on a file individual articles or parts of e-books in moderate amounts send electronic or printed copies of individual articles to another person's personal use in the name of academic cooperation You are not allowed to use the resources or parts of them for commercial purposes distribute, sell or modify the materials, make spin-off copies or provide access to persons who are not entitled to use the materials remove or change the name of the author or the publisher's copyright information or other identification information or prohibitions use data-mining software copy or print the materials on paper systematically or republish the materials in another format 17
