Welcome to MATH 1001, Quantitative Reasoning, which is taught completely online. Learning online gives students the opportunity to manage the time and place for interacting with course content. However, this course has beginning and ending dates. The homework assignments and tests must be completed using MyMathLab in MyLab/Mastering by specified due dates. The final exam is a proctored exam taken on campus (December 13 at 8:00am). If you do not register in MyLab/Mastering by midnight on Sunday, August 21st, you will be withdrawn. Videos, power point slides, worksheets and test reviews are found in Desire2Learn (D2L). Begin the course by reading the syllabus and watching the orientation video which explains the due dates of this course and how to use MyMathLab and Desire2Learn to complete this course. LEARNING OUTCOMES: What are the learning outcomes for this course? 1. Solve real world problems using mathematics. 2. Use quantitative information to make decisions. 3. Understand the relevance of mathematics to their lives. COMMUNICATION: How will the students and professor interact and communicate online? Most of the communication in this course will be done electronically Desire2Learn discussion board and News, and JagMail. Phone calls and face to face meetings are available during office hours with no appointment necessary. If you need to speak with me by phone outside of office hours, send me an with a number where you can be reached along with the times you can be reached. Whenever you would like to communicate by phone outside of office hours, send me an requesting an appointment. I will use JagMail for sending and receiving all s. Remember to check your JagMail daily. The discussion board in Desire2Learn weekly, and the news area in Desire2Learn weekly. I will respond to all e- mails and messages within two business days. In addition, I will send you an during each learning module that addresses your progress in this course. The discussion board in Desire2Learn is a communication tool that provides a forum for student-student and student-professor interaction. Always remember to check your message for spelling and grammatical errors before posting. Do not post any information on the discussion board that you do not want to share with everyone. Once the information is posted, all of your classmates can read your post. You must respect your classmates time when posting messages on the discussion board; stick to the topic being discussed. There is a forum on the discussion board for casual conversations. I will monitor the posts on the discussion board, and respond as needed. The online learning environment for this course must be conducive to learning and participation. Also, any disruptive student will be referred to the proper university official. 2 MyMathLab: Is a MyMathLab student access code required for this course? A MyMathLab student access code is required for this course. The code may be purchased three different ways: 1. bundled with the textbook from the Augusta University bookstore, (see below that the physical textbook is optional, an e-book is included with the access code) 2. purchased as a stand-alone code from a cashier at the Augusta University bookstore, or 3. purchased from the Pearson website (pearsonmylabandmastering.com). This is a suggested schedule; an orderly, timely way to complete the course and meet all the deadlines. You may complete all homework, quizzes and tests before the due date, but not after the due date. For each section listed, read that section in the textbook, watch the video for that section (power points are provided that are used in the videos), and do the homework in MyMathLab for that section. One topic, ph, is not covered in the textbook, but a video is available. The ph worksheet counts 15 points on Test 2. Details about how to turn in the worksheet are on D2L. 4 Course Grade: How is the course grade calculated? Where are grades posted? Quizzes (10%) Quizzes are completed online in MyMathLab. You may attempt each quiz two times before the due date. See the course calendar. The quizzes are timed, allowing 30 minutes to complete. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Graded Homework (15%) Homework is completed online. You may attempt each homework assignment as many times as necessary before the due date. Use pencil and paper to do the homework and enter final answers accordingly. Your four lowest homework grades will be dropped. Tests (20%) Tests are taken online. You may attempt each test two times before the due date. See the course calendar. Tests are timed, allowing two hours to complete. If you receive services according to Augusta University s Office of Disability Services, contact your instructor for testing guidelines at least 24 hours before attempting a test. Final Exam (55%) The final exam is a cumulative departmental exam. It is a pencil and paper test, not taken online. The proctored final exam must be taken on campus during the designated time.
