By the end of the grammar component, students will be able to formally describe a range of lexicogrammatical features (cohesion and sentence manipulation) and show how they are related to various text types in English. G1 G14 E5 E6 E21 To reach a good command of two foreign languages (at levels C2 and B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) whilst developing interpersonal, social and intercultural skills To become an increasingly autonomous learner, with a responsible, enterprising approach. To know the main characteristics of the languages studied in the degree, from a contrastive point of view. To know the formal and pragmatic use of human language. To avoid common errors of transfer between the languages studied in the degree.

Contenidos del programa / Course contents The course is divided into 2 components: and Grammar This is a practical workshop course focusing on writing and revising extended, fully referenced Argumentative and Discussion essays and learning how to provide intensive collaborative peer feedback in small teams, based on theoretical materials covered in the Lengua III component. Grammar 1. Review of Text Functions and their lexico-grammatical features I: description, narration, instruction and explanation. 2. Review of Text Functions and their lexico-grammatical features II: expository texts, argument and persuasion. 3. Cohesion I: reference, ellipsis, substitution, conjunction. 4. Cohesion II: lexical cohesion. 5. Métodos de evaluación y porcentaje en la calificación final / Evaluation procedures and weight of components in the final grade Component Course Work Final Exam 1st convocatoria % of Final Course grade Grammar nd convocatoria Grammar 40 (from first assessment; not recoverable) 40 (partly recoverable) Notes Students must obtain a positive grade (i.e. more than zero) in each of the two components ( and Grammar), or they will receive a No Evaluado notification in the Actas. In each of the two components ( and Grammar), students must obtain a positive grade (i.e. more than zero - not necessarily a passing grade) in BOTH COURSE WORK and EXAM, or they will receive a No Evaluado notification overall in the Actas. For example, a student in 100

7 Grammar who receives a 0 for coursework and a 6 for the exam will receive a No Evaluado for the final assessment in Grammar, and therefore a No Evaluado for Lengua Inglesa IV as a whole, irrespective of the grade achieved in the other component (). Students only have to repeat in a convocatoria extraordinaria the component(s) failed. The grades for the passed components are held for the convocatoria extraordinaria. However, any student with an overall No Evaluado (NE) in the convocatoria ordinaria MUST retake the assessments in ALL the components in the convocatoria extraordinaria, even those which the student may have passed. Students cannot receive more than 4.9 if they have failed either component, no matter what the theoretical average may be. Coursework that is not handed in at the time/date specified by the professor will receive a 0 grade, unless there is a valid medical reason. Attendance is obligatory. An attendance of less than 80% of classes without justification will result in a reduction in the final grade and the possible failure of the component. Assessment for writing is divided into 2 parts: Peer Feedback (50% of assessment) & Essay (50% of assessment). Students must pass BOTH the Peer Feedback part of the evaluation AND the Essay part of the evaluation. If a student fails one part of the evaluation, then the grade received by the student will be less than 5 (i.e. a fail overall for writing) even if the calculated average is above 5. In these cases the grade given will be 4.9 and the students will have to go to the convocatoria extraordinaria examination. Students who fail the writing component in the 1st convocatoria have to do an exam in the convocatoria extraordinaria which counts for 60% of the final assessment. The other 40% is retained from the original assessment (originally 100% on the convocatoria ordinaria). This 40% is not recoverable. Plagiarism of any kind will result in a zero grade.
