4 A message from the Director of Assessment, Centre for Medical Education, Cardiff Dear Delegate, A very warm welcome to APACHE! In 2017 Cardiff and the Academy of Medical educators worked together for the first time on a day long programme for those involved in assessment in a clinical and healthcare context. It was a really interesting exercise to get together a group of experts in assessment issues with such a varied range of experience and to share tried and tested theories, new ideas and good practice with colleagues from across the UK and beyond. Delegates told us they got a great deal out of the event so we decided to hold it again this year. We have some of the same faces from last year and some new ones too. We re particularly thrilled that Erik Driessen has come over from the Netherlands to deliver a keynote talk and a workshop too! We are very grateful to Julie Browne and the Academy of Medical Educators team for all their hard work in organising the event, as well as for the support of the Centre for Medical Education. I hope that you enjoy the two days and take advantage of the informal setting to network and get to know some of your assessment colleagues during the sessions and over dinner. 5 Keynote speaker Professor Erik Driessen Erik Driessen holds a masters degree in educational science and a PhD in medical education. He is Professor in Medical Education and Chair of the Department of Educational Development and Research at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht. He is Editor in Chief of the Journal Perspectives on Medical Education. Driessen is interested in evaluation and assessment and more specifically topics such as learning and assessment in the workplace, mentoring, and the use of portfolios for learning and assessment. He is also interested in education across different cultures. He publishes on all of these topics in different journals and books. A part of Professor Driessen s work is international: he mentors PHD students from many countries and he participates in a variety of international projects, such as consultancies and research projects in and outside of Europe. In 2008, he was a visiting professor at the Gifu Medical School in Japan.
