2 Course Description This course is designed to introduce to students fundamental concepts of calculus, including derivatives and integrals for single variable functions. Especially, those concepts may be useful in student s major and future career. Course Topics will include limits and derivatives, continuity, differentiation rules, applications of derivatives, and an introduction to definite and indefinite integrals, including the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Form of instruction: lecture and tutorial. Grading Grading Scale Your overall grade in this course is based upon the following point system. Tutorial quizzes (8) 150pts, 21% Written homeworks (12) 150pts, 21% 2 100pts each 200pts, 29% Final exam 200pts, 29% Total 700pts, 100% Letter Grade Minimum % Minimum Points Needed Passing Grades Grades requiring a course repeat A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D F 93 90% 87% 83% 80% 77% 73% 70% 67% 60% <60% % <420 Conduct Exams Under the terms of enrollment, students acknowledge the University s authority to take disciplinary action for conduct on or off university property that is detrimental to the university s core values. Inappropriate conducts include but not limited to: talking randomly in class, leaving early without permission, arriving very late, unauthorized use of laptop or other electronic devices, etc. They disturb the class. Please respect other students! There will be 2 midterm exams: Wed September 25 at 6pm and Wed November 6 at 6pm; rooms TBA. There will be a comprehensive final exam on Thursday December 12, 7:00pm to 9:00pm. All exams are closed book and closed notes. No calculators. Bring photo ID to each exam. No early finals. No make-ups or early midterm exams except for legitimate documentable 2

3 reasons. If, for some legitimate reason, you cannot make it to one of the exams, please contact the instructor well in advance. Homework/ Quizzes Homework will be assigned in lecture and collected by your TA the week after it is assigned. You are responsible to do your own work, but it is appropriate and often advantageous to work with a study partner or a small study group. Your TA will discuss his/her specific homework requirements/policies. Your TA will give you weekly quizzes in tutorial, except for the first week and exam weeks. Study Assistance Why struggle?
