1 Lake-Sumter Community College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix Number REA 0002 Course Title: College Prep Reading II CRN: 30112,30114 Credit: 4 Term: Summer B 2011 This course provides reading instruction to those students who test into the course based on a Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) for reading or for those students who have Course Catalog completed the REA 0001 course with a grade of C or higher in preparation for passing the Description: College Preparatory Reading Test (CPRT), a comprehensive exit test for reading. This course is designed to build vocabulary skills, literal and critical comprehension skills, and successful reading strategies.. The following are the specific comprehension improvement and vocabulary development course objectives. 1. Comprehension Improvement A. Literal comprehension skills 1. Recognizing main idea in a given passage 2.Identiying supporting details 3.Determing the meaning of words on the basis of context B. Critical reading skills 1. Recognizing the author s purpose 2. Identifying the author s overall organizational pattern 3. Distinguishing between statement of fact and statement of opinion 4. Detecting bias 5. Recognizing the author s tone 6. Recognizing explicit and implicit relationships within a sentence 7. Recognizing valid arguments 8. Drawing logical inferences and conclusion II. Vocabulary Development A. 2 B. Learning and using common word parts to determine the meaning of new words C. Recognizing the denotation and connotation of words D. Recognizing that every word represents a concept and serves as a graphic symbol of that concept. Apply understanding of paragraph structures and student success skills to written responses Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Assessed in this Course: (what the students take with them beyond this course) Develop flexibility in reading rate appropriate for reading material and to increase fluency with fictional and non-fictional texts Analyze a text using critical reading skills; separating fact and opinion, detecting propaganda techniques, and recognizing errors in reading Analyze valid arguments and to draw conclusions and inferences by recognizing the point of the argument and by the examination of the adequacy and relevance of the support given Recognize the author s purpose, tone, and bias to interpret the inferences wit a written or visual text. To recognize and identify both stated and implied main ideas, supporting details, transitions, and pattern of organization in paragraphs and longer passages. Academic Integrity: Important Information for Students with Disabilities: Privacy Policy (FERPA): The successful functioning of the academic community demands honesty, which is the basis of respect for both ideas and persons. In the academic community, there is an ongoing assumption of academic integrity at all levels. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Attendance / Withdrawal Policies: Withdrawal Deadline: Friday, July 25, 2011 Methods of Evaluation: REA 0002 is a skills course, and the student must be present to participate. It is mandatory, therefore, that ALL TARDIES AND ABSENCES BE MADE UP by attending an additional reading section taught by the same instructor. The failure to make up any absence or tardy attendance will result in a grade reduction of 3.3% per absence. 1. REA 0002 Assignments TR Spring 2011 Text book directions: Write your answers in the text book. Tear out the assigned pages, write your name, my name and on the color of your folder on the first page. TURN IN TEXTS ON THE DAY OF THE EXAM-ASSEMBLE ALL OF YOUR GRADED HOMEWORK, ARRANGE IN OREDER AND TURN IN THE ENITRE BOOK INSIDE THE COVER. (200 points) Ten Steps to Improving College Reading Skills: Complete all objective and short answer questions including practice questions. Do not complete the discussion questions. Use the limited answer key starting on page 615 before completing the review questions. Text book assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned date whether the student is present or not. Five per cent will be deducted for each class the assignment is late.
