1 Campus Ratings for Canyon Middle School Background Information Under House Bill 5 (passed last year by the 83 rd Texas Legislature), all districts are required to evaluate the district s performance and the performance of each campus in regard to community and student engagement. Districts must assign one of four performance ratings Exemplary, Recognized, Acceptable or Unacceptable to the district and each campus for overall performance, including the following categories: Fine arts; Wellness and physical education; Community and parental involvement; 21 st Century Workforce Development program; Second language acquisition program; Digital learning environment; Dropout prevention strategies; and Educational programs for gifted and talented students. House Bill 5 requires a local committee or committees to determine the criteria that the district uses to evaluate and assign performance ratings and to evaluate the district s compliance with statutory reporting and policy requirements. In Comal Independent School District, the District Educational Improvement Council (DEIC) developed the rating criteria and the campus sitebased decision-making teams determined the ratings for each category. Under House Bill 5, districts must post the ratings and compliance status for the district and each campus on the school district s website by August 8, 2014.

Teachers have been trained in second language acquisition strategies and are utilizing these strategies in the classroom to aid student learning. Campus activities are designed and implemented to encourage parent and community involvement and participation in the educational process. Parents are encouraged to become active in activities and programs at the district level, including instructional and operations committees. For English Language Learners (ELLs), Canyon Middle School has an English as a Second Language (ESL) program for students who are not native English speakers. Students are supported by ESL certified teachers and teachers who have been trained in providing second language acquisition support to students. ELLs class schedules are determined based on the level of English language support needed. Students in the beginning or intermediate levels of English language proficiency are scheduled with a dedicated ESL teacher for their English Language Arts classes and are provided with inclusion support during their content area classes to assist in understanding both the content and the language of math, science and social studies. Students who are in the advanced or advanced high levels of English language acquisition and require less intensive support are instructed by ESL certified and trained teachers and monitored throughout the school year. As students English language proficiency improves, adjustments to the level of language support are made. Canyon Middle School offers Spanish for students seeking to acquire a second language. Students in 7 th grade are enrolled in an Exploratory Spanish class, and upon completion and a demonstrated readiness, students are enrolled in the Spanish I class, allowing students the opportunity to earn high school credit while enrolled in a junior high school course. All staff at Canyon Middle School take steps to encourage school attendance, including mentoring students, student-interest advisory programs, one-to-one and small group discussions, and developing relationships with students that provide a campus environment that is safe and secure. Counselors, administrators, teachers and support staff (including Communities in Schools) utilize early warning indicators to identify students at risk of dropping out and work to intervene as necessary and appropriate. As part of this program, students are enrolled in a GT course that provides high-level activities to match the requisite expectations. Teachers and staff are consulted to ensure that all students who fit the respective criteria for admission into the GT program are identified and encouraged to apply for consideration. The comprehensive assessment program is administered by Comal ISD to ensure that students are prepared to handle the rigors of the GT courses. The GT teacher regularly communicates with staff as to the progress and success of the students enrolled in the program, as well as with parents in regard to the performance and progress of their son or daughter.
