1 MENTORING AND INDUCTION FOR NEW TEACHERS MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Overview of MINT Overview of MINT September 22, 2009

2 Welcome to Miami-Dade County Public Schools Mentoring and Induction for New Teachers (MINT) is a program offered to all new teachers. MINT is a three-year comprehensive induction program designed to assist and retain new teachers. MINT is aligned with the Florida Educators Accomplished Practices (FEAP) and will provide sustained support by enlisting veteran school, regional and district educators to mentor, coach and guide new teachers.

3 New Teacher Tracks Year One Education Majors - New Teacher Orientation strand for education majors - Site-based mentor assigned - Core learning courses - In-classroom observations (During planning time or if school site funding is available to pay for substitute coverage) Non-Education Majors - New Teacher Orientation strand for non-education majors - Site-based mentor assigned - AP3 or college courses - In-classroom observations (During planning time or if school site funding is available to pay for substitute coverage) Experienced Teachers - New Teacher Orientation strand for teachers with previous teaching experience - Buddy teacher or online mentor assigned/selected - Professional development, as needed - In-classroom observations (During planning time or if school site funding is available to pay for substitute coverage)

7 In-class Teacher Observations New teachers should observe mentor or other veteran teachers Mentors and new teachers will reflect on lessons observed, discuss instructional strategies t and develop a plan to incorporate key learnings in the new teacher s classroom

8 Core Courses for Education Majors Topics Classroom Management Differentiated Instruction Data Analysis Using Data to Inform Instruction Reading in the Content Areas or Content Area Course Three of the five core courses must be taken throughout the first year during any of the following: after hours, PD Day or on Saturdays

9 Core Courses for non-education Majors Alternative Professional Preparation Program (AP3) District-developed and state approved program which allows teachers to meet state certification requirements Taken in lieu of professional learning courses Offered after hours and on Saturdays Teachers participating in AP3 during year two or three must identify a buddy teacher to serve as a mentor

10 Professional Learning Communities for New Teachers (PLCNT) Provide opportunity for new teachers to network and engage in conversation to reflect on best practices and improve instruction. Spearheaded by National Board Certified Teachers or MINT Certified Mentors Held monthly Follow-up to core learning courses Participation i is voluntary

11 Professional Education Competence (PEC) PEC is one of the requirements teachers must fulfill for initial state certification. Successful completion of MINT core learning courses, AP3 or college courses and acceptable annual evaluation meet PEC requirement All activities must be documented on MINT New Teacher Activity E-Log

12 Self Assessment In collaboration with their mentors, new teachers will undertake a self assessment to identify their strengths and areas for growth. The self assessment must be completed within the first 30 days of each new teacher s employment. To download d the self assessment protocol, log on to

13 Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) The 1999 Florida legislature l amended d Florida Statute to include: the requirement for all Florida districts to require principals p to establish and maintain individual professional development plans for each instructional employee. As of November 2002, the Professional Development Plan requirement is now a part of F.S (4)(b)(5). The IPDP must be completed within 30 days of employment.

14 MINT New Teacher Activity E-LOG Upon completion of each MINT program activity, teachers must record information relating to the activity on the New Teacher Activity it E-Log. The log tracks compliance with MINT program requirements and allows new teachers to chart their attainment of professional learning goals as set forth in their Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP). 17 New Teacher Helpline Professional Development, in collaboration with the Office of Human Resources, is committed to assisting new teachers. Support is available by calling the New Teacher Helpline at Callers may request answers to questions relating to personnel issues, classroom management, teaching strategies, etc. School site support and mentoring may also be requested by calling the helpline. Calls will be returned within 24 hours.
