2 Introduction of UNN and PolyU SPEED The programmes described in this brochure are offered by the School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED) in collaboration with Northumbria University, Newcastle, the UK. Since January 2003, these programmes have nurtured around 5,000 graduates in Hong Kong, and the January 2019 cohort will be the 33 rd intake since the collaboration. The curricula, syllabuses and assessments are identical to those delivered on campus in Newcastle. Students will be awarded the degrees by Northumbria University upon successful completion of study. Northumbria University Northumbria University (UNN) is the largest university in the North East UK, first established as a polytechnic in 1969 and inaugurated as a university on 1 September It is an expanding multicultural learning community, with excellent links with further and higher education, industry and commerce throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. Newcastle Business School Newcastle Business School (NBS) of Northumbria University is a centre of excellence in business and management education, recognised for academic quality and business relevance. It is one of the largest, most successful and fastest growing business schools in the UK and has established a first-class reputation internationally for dynamic, responsive business and management training and development. NBS also won the Business School of the Year award at the highly prestigious Times Higher Education Awards The Hong Kong Polytechnic University The origin of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) can be traced back to 1937 with the founding of the first publicly-funded post-secondary technical institution in Hong Kong the Government Trade School. The School was renamed the Hong Kong Technical College in In August 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic was formally established, taking over the campus and staff of the Hong Kong Technical College. The institution assumed full university status in November PolyU is a government-funded institution in Hong Kong providing high quality education of an applied nature that meets the changing requirements of the community, and preparing students for challenges in their future career. School of Professional Education and Executive Development Officially formed by PolyU in 1999, PolyU SPEED has been actively developing and delivering a wide range of professionally-oriented programmes that are relevant to individual advancement and wider socio-economic needs. In pursuing its vision to becoming a leading self-financing tertiary education institution in Hong Kong, PolyU SPEED provides sub-degree graduates with quality articulation degree programmes relevant to their career and professional aspirations. 1

3 Scholarships Scholarship opportunities are available for students with outstanding academic results and merits. English Language and Cultural Learning Programme Students admitted to the UNN programmes can apply, on a competitive basis, to attend the English Language and Cultural Learning Programme at Northumbria University and experience the life and culture in the UK in the Summer Term. Successful candidates will be required to contribute part of the costs involved. Programme Features / Benefits Teaching and Learning Support Modules are conducted through lectures and seminars. Apart from face-to-face teaching, students will also have access to web-based materials. Study Support activities such as orientation, library induction, research workshop and so on will be run to facilitate academic support and provide students with a framework for independent learning. Class Schedule and Teaching Venue Part-time classes are conducted on weekday evenings and / or Saturday afternoons / evenings on PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus or PolyU West Kowloon Campus. Library Facilities Library facilities are available to students. Financial Assistance Extended Non-means-tested Loan Students on the programmes are eligible to apply for the Extended Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (ENLS) offered by the Student Finance Office (SFO). For more details, please visit the CEF website at For admission to the programmes, applicants should: possess a Higher Diploma or an Associate Degree or an equivalent qualification in a business-related discipline, or BTEC Higher National Diploma in Business, AND achieve a pass (Grade E or above) in HKALE Use of English, a score of 575 in TOEFL, or 6.5 in IELTS, or equivalent in other tests of English. Holders of other qualification(s) with substantial relevant work experience may also apply. Such applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 2

The programme explores and develops the functional areas of business, including management, marketing and strategy. 8 Module Description HR0371 Rewarding Relationships (20 credits) This module aims to deliver a critical and relevant overview of the purposes and practices of reward management and employment relations. By the end of the module, students should be able to design reward practices against objectives and to consider and balance the implications of those practices for competing sets of organisational interests. The module s learning activities focus upon the integration of knowledge and skill-based activities, specifically the development of a reward system that reflects contemporary innovations and its implementation through appropriate employment relations practices such as negotiation and compromise. HR0372 Culture and Organisations (20 credits) The rationale of the module is to develop a coherent understanding of the issues relating to theory and practical applications of cultural and organisational impacts on organisations and institutions in the global and international environment. The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and seminars. These will be supported by e-portal learning activities. HR0373 Employee Resourcing and Development (20 credits) This module aims to develop students critical knowledge and understanding of how Resourcing and Development (R&D) can add value and enhance organisational effectiveness and sustainability. The module will explore the effective integration of R&D in managing the interests of stakeholders in the development, design, delivery and evaluation of the R&D strategies and processes within an organisational context. The module examines the integration of R&D to facilitate the achievement of organisations strategic objectives in the development and management of organisational knowledge and capacity building. The module aims to encourage students to critically engage with current theoretical and applied perspectives and explore the practical application of these perspectives through reference to written case studies illustrating work situations, group tasks, or directly through students reflection on their own experience and work-based assignment. 7

9 MO0358 Strategic Supply Chain Management (20 credits) The module is designed to equip students with the depth of knowledge, skills and techniques necessary to understand, analyse, design and formulate a supply chain management philosophy. Emphasis is placed on the ability of students to apply knowledge and learning through business-related case studies. The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and case studies. MO0359 Supply Networks (20 credits) MO0360 Innovation and IT in the Supply Chain (20 credits) The module provides an understanding of the physical movements of goods through supply chains, the networks of organisations involved and the modes of transport used. The module will explore the logistical and network solutions for real business distribution problems across both inland and overseas operations and the challenges and future opportunities of logistics providers / freight operators. The module also focuses on transport as a service to the public, both domestically and internationally, examining the allied industries it supports. It also provides an appreciation of the socio-political debate surrounding the sustainability of different transport modes and the realities of such debates when serving and operating in international markets. Students studying this module will achieve an all-round appreciation of transport and distribution throughout supply chains through a variety of lectures, workshops, seminars and case studies. The module provides students with an understanding of managing innovations in supply chains. Students will be provided with an overview of what innovation actually is, e.g. product, process and organisational innovation, and how supply chains can effectively and efficiently support innovation processes across organisations. Furthermore, the module will explore the importance of managing knowledge for the purpose of managing innovation in supply chains, and will introduce to students different knowledge management frameworks. As relationships are important for managing innovations in supply chains, the module also focuses on giving students an overview of different kinds of relationship processes. Moreover, students will be introduced to different kinds of relationship facets, e.g. power and trust, and how these relationship facets can be used to manage innovations in supply chains. Finally, students will be introduced to a specific type of process innovation, i.e. information technology. In relation to information technology, a few current topics will be discussed. 8

10 MK0388 Marketing Management and Strategy (20 credits) HR0388 Academic and Career Development (20 credits) This module will extend students knowledge and understanding of marketing acquired from their introductory module, into the management area (approach and application). They will learn to apply the principles and techniques of marketing management across a wide range of goods and services in different markets. Students will learn to use models which help marketing managers to make more informed decisions (e.g. new product development, brand repositioning, deletion, sales force management and communication technique). Students will undertake analysis of complex situations via the use of case studies and learn how to present solutions through group discussions. The ability to think strategically will be expressed in the production of marketing plans. The module will be delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops. This module is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and transferable skills for their future employability and career development. Students will also receive support in extending their academic skills so that they can take a critical approach to this module and their wider studies. This module begins by supporting students to understand and demonstrate advanced academic study skills. This will enable them to take a more critical, deeper and more research-informed approach to their studies. Students will develop valuable knowledge and skills of the global graduate labour market drawing upon national and international exemplars, whilst exploring key aspects of their skills, knowledge, personality, values, abilities and interests to make a well-informed career choice and develop a career plan. The module is taught by combined lectures / seminars / workshops due to the interactive nature of the module. Detailed directed reading, diagnostics and interactive exercises will be undertaken which are contextualised to the country of study and intended employment. 9

11 NX0328 Contemporary Issues in Business (20 credits) SM0382 Strategic Management and Corporate Responsibility (20 credits) To support individual investigation into an applied business problem or issue, each student will develop a topic based on existing research with the support of a specialist workshop tutor. This individual investigation will draw on relevant academic theories, concepts and frameworks and will result in a critical synthesis of business practice and academic theory. This module is taught through a series of workshops and lectures. This workshop programme is supported by directed reading and advice specific to the investigation of the student s specific business issue / problem and the development of their professional awareness and competence. The overall aim of this module is to teach students how organisations can compete successfully in economic terms while managing their social and environmental responsibility. At the end of the module students will be able to critically evaluate the factors which underpin an organisation s success (or otherwise) in managing the triple bottom line and will have learned how to use appropriate frameworks to analyse research material and draw useful conclusions.
