5 Introducing CILEx Introduction to the CILEx Programme The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) is the professional association for Chartered Legal Executives and other members of CILEx. It regulates its members in the public interest. Since 1963 the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives has offered unparalleled access to a flexible career in law. It is a professional association representing around 20,000 members, of which 7,500 are qualified Chartered Legal Executive lawyers and 12,500 are practising paralegals and other legal practitioners. Internationally, CILEx offers a range of legal studies and legal secretary qualifications which are available in over 100 centres globally. CILEx provides a cost-effective way of obtaining law qualifications without having to complete a law degree (although in some countries, graduates of law or non-law subjects can still choose to become a lawyer using CILEx route). Entry is accessible to those holding a variety of qualification levels. The CILEx route is the ideal way to obtain a law qualification for school leavers, graduates, legal support staff, mature students and those who already have family commitments. Benefits of CILEx Membership Being a part of the CILEx family gives you the protection of an organisation that is; a professional body, a front line regulator, an awarding body. Being regulated by ILEX Professional Standards (IPS) is a first-rate membership benefit in itself. Regulation brings with it respect and recognition, it differentiates you from those in the legal profession that do not belong to a recognised professional body and ensures high standards of quality from CILEx professionals. As a member you can sign up for the weekly CILEx which contains a variety of information, from practical membership updates to awards and events you may be interested in. 6 Which Qualification to Choose? Currently, there are Legal Secretary and Paralegal qualifications available to international students: Qualifications for Legal Secretaries: This range of qualifications is aimed at those who work or want to work as administrators/secretaries and who already possess a basic knowledge and understanding of administration but not necessarily the legal skills required. The qualifications have a flexible, modular structure and allow learners to choose from a range of topics to study. There are two qualification options available certificate and diploma, depending on how many units (topics) you wish to take. Certificate / Diploma for Legal Secretaries: We recommend this level for school leavers (JSS/SSS) and individuals with limited working experience Advanced Certificate / Advanced Diploma for Legal Secretaries: We recommend this level for individuals who have some experience in a secretarial role, 2 years or more working experience, or those in a supervisory role Legal Studies (Paralegal) Qualifications: If you work or are seeking employment in a paralegal role, or those occupations where knowledge of the law is required (e.g. law enforcement agencies, court services, customs, etc.), this may be the qualification for you. The Legal Studies qualification has a flexible approach and allows you to choose from two qualifications - Award and Certificate, all set at introductory Level Award in Legal Studies: If you have never studied law before, the Award would be a good place to start as it provides a base on which additional units can be added. This may be suitable for individuals such as company secretaries, company directors and those looking to have a basic understanding of the law and its principles Certificate in Legal Studies. We recommend this qualification for individuals who are involved with drafting legal documents, letters, etc. If you are unsure what level or qualification is suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact one of our staff for assistance. 6

7 Legal Secretaries Certificate / Diploma The Certificate / Diploma for Legal Secretaries qualification is suitable for those who are interested in introductory-level study in legal practice - legal secretaries who wish to understand more about the context of their work or start studying law with a view to working as a paralegal in a file-handling role and do not have the minimum recommended academic requirements to embark on the CILEx Level 3 courses. The courses leading to the CILEx Certificate / Diploma for Legal Secretaries will give you a good introduction to legal study and will give you the confidence to progress to the next stage. To achieve any of the Legal Secretaries qualifications, you will need to pass a series of externally set multiple choice and task-based assignments. 8 Legal Secretaries Advanced Certificate / Advanced Diploma The Advanced Certificate / Advanced Diploma for Legal Secretaries is aimed at learners who work or want to work as a senior administrator/secretary and who may already possess a knowledge / experience of working in a secretarial role or a legal environment, with a good understanding of administration but not necessarily the legal skills required. It is particularly relevant for those wanting to develop those skills within the legal sector. The qualification has a flexible approach and allows learners to choose which route to study. To achieve any of the Legal Secretaries qualifications, you will need to pass a series of externally set multiple choice and task-based assignments. If you have never studied law before, the Award would be a good place to start as it provides a base on which to commence your legal studies. 11 Description of Study Methods Classroom Overview Harley Reed offers flexible study options for our students, with classes available throughout the year All our students on our learning courses receive a full set of study materials and practice questions Harley Reed also ensures all students are registered for exams and with appropriate membership with CILEx Classroom Learning Delivered in a traditional classroom setting with students able to attend full-time weekday intensive (where available), evening, or weekend sessions, involving both teaching and intensive classroom revision sessions (Exam Course). We ensure that learning is embedded through classroom interactions and exam focussed question practice. General Guidance Notes Harley Reed automatically enrols students onto our pass plus scheme. This allows students to go through our courses to resit exams providing all requirements were fulfilled (including attending all tuition, feedback and meetings requested by the tutor and completing all tests / assignments). Full terms are provided in the training terms and conditions to registered students Students should be prepared to dedicate up to 60 hours per module when choosing their preferred progression speed 11

13 Registration Students can register to study with Harley Reed at any point during the year. The registration process is: 1. Students should complete the Harley Reed Student Registration pack and return signed copies by or fax. Students should determine the appropriate entry level based on the entry level requirements and their existing qualifications. Harley Reed s training team is able to assist students in establishing the entry level. 2. Harley Reed will usually discuss the contents of the registration and chosen assessment method with the students to establish the most appropriate route. 3. Harley Reed will confirm the papers the student wishes to enter, their chosen exam route, and the student s course schedule and issue an invoice. 4. On registration, a student registration fee is also payable to CILEx which Harley Reed will collect from students. This amount varies depending on the qualification being studied and includes all examination / assessment costs. 5. Examinations for CILEx are conducted throughout the year at Harley Reed 13
