Our community is continually and deservedly impressed by the school and its successes, from the consistently high performance in public examinations to the wide range of enrichment activities we offer. At Newlands we have a very clear vision for the future of our school. We are determined that our girls have the best possible education and opportunities. We have created an environment in which all students can achieve their full potential, both inside and outside the classroom; we have high expectations for our students and we want them to be proud of their work and of their school. Our girls leave us, not only with excellent qualifications, but as confident, articulate and aspirational young women, fully equipped to take up a place in higher education and employment. 4 Achieving Excellence At the heart of Newlands Girls School is our commitment to excellence, not just as a vision, but woven into every aspect of what we do. Our A Level results are categorised as outstanding, especially in the Russell Group prioritised subjects where over half of the results are A*, A or B grades. It is a delight each year to see our girls achieve the results that guarantee them a university place of their choice. We also achieve consistently excellent results at GCSE which regularly puts us at the top of local league tables. Nearly 90% of our girls make more than the expected amount of progress from the end of Key Stage 2 to the end of Key Stage 4 in Mathematics and English which builds firm foundations for learning across the curriculum. All girls receive personalised information, advice and guidance to help them to be the best they can be and to make well-informed decisions about the subjects they choose to study both now and in the future. Supported by our superb pastoral care, we provide a high quality, stimulating learning environment in which each student can develop and achieve her full potential. Inspiring Curriculum The curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant for young women in the 21st Century. Modern technology, the global dimension and a handson approach to learning make the curriculum exciting and challenging for all students. A truly personalised approach means that all students have the opportunity to enjoy, and succeed in, their chosen subjects. The curriculum is tailored to individual needs and abilities, including a Gifted and Talented programme and extra support for those with additional learning needs. Field trips, residential experiences, visiting speakers, theatre groups and House Competitions all contribute to a rich educational provision which brings subjects to life in a creative and enjoyable way. Teaching is innovative, inspirational and constantly evolving. Students are key to the ongoing development of our curriculum and learning environment. Their experiences as learners are invaluable and help to inform the strategic direction and development of our school. Whatever each individual girl s interest or passion, we have talented and dedicated staff who can develop it in an inspiring, enriching and exciting way. 04

6 I liked Year 7. I thought it was a great year. I enjoyed all the lessons and my whole form were really friendly. Year 8 Student Learning outside the classroom At Newlands, all girls are encouraged to take part in at least one extra-curricular activity and can choose from an impressive list including sport, drama and music clubs, science, film and public speaking groups and for the older girls, off-site equine care in addition to The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Our annual school play and The Gym and Dance Show are key dates in the Newlands Diary with hundreds of girls participating and performing to a full house every night. 06

7 Nurturing talent Newlands provides a safe and happy environment for girls to reach their full potential. We believe that the development of the whole person is a key to success. In addition to excellent provision for teaching and learning, our superb pastoral care supports every girl at every stage of her development, from an extensive range of activities for induction into Year 7, to a tailored programme of support for university admission. The Student Voice enables our girls to play an active role in the school s decision-making processes, preparing them to take their place as citizens of the future. Work experience and expert careers advice make sure that every girl has equal access to opportunities. We aim to ensure that all of our girls leave us equipped with the skills to successfully follow their chosen paths. Student Council has given me the confidence and responsibility to voice other students opinions and helped me become an independent, mature representative of Newlands. 9 Leadership, Courage and Resilience All girls are encouraged to believe in themselves and unleash their aspirations. We provide and facilitate opportunities that enable them to develop a real sense of self-worth, drive and ambition. At Newlands we pride ourselves in encouraging our girls to develop their leadership skills and to become responsible global citizens, so that when they leave us they are fully equipped for higher education and the world of work. One of the aspects of which we are most proud is the way our older students support and encourage our younger students. They are outstanding role models for the younger girls and play a key role in supporting their progress and development throughout the school. We recognise that Newlands girls are future leaders and change-makers and we aim to provide them with every opportunity to develop the skills and talents that will enable them to be world class. Dedication and determination We have an outstanding team of dedicated staff whose shared aim is in helping all students to achieve their individual goals. There is a relationship of respect, trust and support between the staff and students. Staff lead by example, instilling in the students a sense of determination to reach their potential and will not hesitate to go above and beyond to ensure the students success. Newlands ethos is based around a partnership between students, staff and parents. Individual and collective responsibility and commitment shown by all members of the Newlands community enable us to maintain our high standards and continue our success year on year. 09

10 Lifelong friendships One of the many things that makes Newlands special is the way our students go the extra mile to support one another friendships are formed here which last a lifetime. Our Head Girls, Deputy Head Girls and Student Leaders are at the forefront of ensuring that all members of our community feel supported and work enthusiastically alongside each other, irrespective of age or ability. The range of creative and inspiring lessons and activities provide a unique community that encourages everyone to participate and feel valued. The range of experiences from drama, dance and music to debate and enterprise creates many opportunities for students with shared passions and interests to form new friendships. We encourage girls to make connections both inside and outside school, helping them to form meaningful, lifelong partnerships. At Newlands we encourage mutual respect for all members of our wider community and students have a clear sense of identity and respect for the values of others.
