1 of :16 Sixth edition ICTO Newsletter The sixth edition of the ICTO Newsletter is available. The ICTO Newsletter is a joint initiative by E&SA and the SSC ICT. The newsletter will provide regular updates on new developments in the field of ICT in education at TU Delft. Each edition will highlight a number of topics that may be relevant and interesting to you and youreducational practice. In the Calender both national and local evenst related to the use of ICT in education are highlighted. Previous editions ICTO Newsletter (Un)subscribe ICTO Newsletter Questions, remarks, contribute: Printversion current ICTO Newsletter From the editor: As usual, much has been happening lately in the field of ICT in education. Not only at TU Delft, but also elsewhere. A good enough reason to bring out another issue of the ICTO Newsletter. The first ICTO Roadshow held at the IDE Faculty has now finished, so more about that in this issue. You can also read about the announcement of four new E-Merge projects and another particularly interesting leaflet has appeared in the SSC ICT publication series. Read more There is now more information about the Digital Assessment project within TU Delft; a brief update on that in this issue. The last report in this newsletter is about the experiences of Meta Keijzer during the Mobile Learning Spring School, which she visited on behalf of TU Delft. Lastly, good news about Open Course Ware: OCW is now on the Core website (China Open Resource for Education, the Chinese version of OCW), meaning that an even wider public will be aware of and have access to TU Delft's educational materials (see More information? Send an to nieuwsbrieficto@.tudelft.nl ICTO Roadshow 2009 The ICTO Roadshow is an initiative of Educational & Student Affairs (E&SA), the faculty and the SSC ICT and the pilot was held at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering from 9 to 11 June. The aim of this Roadshow is to encourage more lecturers to apply ICT in Education. During the Roadshow, several lecturers who are currently using ICT in their teaching presented their work to colleagues who are not yet making use of ICT in Education. This is all under the heading of teachers informing teachers in order to get colleagues to think about whether the use (application) of ICT in Education might also have advantages for their own teaching. Read more Given that the ICTO Roadshow at IDE was the very first one, it was a nerve-wracking time for the organisers waiting to see whether the concept would get a favourable reception from the lecturers. On the first day of the Roadshow, the turnout was fairly modest and 'De Kuil' remained pretty empty. It turned out that there was another meeting the same day at IDE which many of the lecturers were attending. Luckily, however, the ICT Roadshow was visited on the second and third day by a large number of lecturers (and even a few students). The lecturers were able to wander round the Roadshow and see various ICTO applications, often explained by fellow IDE lecturers. This was all accompanied by a delicious lunch provided for the visitors. People were thus able to find out more information about the use of various educational support software, such as Wikis, digital assessment (Blackboard) and peer review in teaching. The lecturers could also look at various gadgets (and more importantly, try them out), such as the MIMIO interactive whiteboard, digital paper and various other digital teaching aids designed to make the lecturer s life easier. There were also examples of more sophisticated techniques, such as digital drawing on an interactive whiteboard (which produced astoundingly good results), and online and distance collaboration on the (digital) design of a product. A major advantage of these techniques is that learning can become increasingly non-dependent on time and space. The techniques also make it possible to record the entire design process, thus providing an opportunity to look back over each step of the process, which is of course extremely helpful for students as well as future designers. We can now look back at a successful first ICTO Roadshow. Given that the first Roadshow was a pilot, we will thus evaluate it thoroughly and make any improvements that are necessary (and possible). The presentations given at the ICTO Roadshow were also recorded by Collegerama and will soon be made available on the website: For more information about the ICTO Roadshow, please contact Frans van der Meijden (F.P.M.vanderMeijden@tudelft.nl) or Willem Smit (w.smit@tudelft.nl). Examples of student portfolios on Blackboard: In view of the limited experience with Blackboard s portfolio system (a standard component of the Content System), the SSC-ICT asked four students to study the portfolio system in more detail. For three weeks, the four students from different faculties (IDE, AE, 3mE and EEMCS) worked on various portfolios. For this assignment, each student made a development portfolio and a showcase portfolio. This gave us a total of eight sample portfolios representative of what we would expect from a student at TU Delft. Read more The examples can be seen on TU Delft s ICTO website under the item Portfolio system in the ICTO showcase: If you are interested in using the portfolio system and would like more information on this subject, please visit the Community of Practice (COP) Portfolio TU Delft in Blackboard. There, you will find a large collection of information about the portfolio system, including examples. You can find COP portfolio by logging on to Blackboard, then going to the

Four E-Merge projects around the theme of Continuous Learning Tracks and Study Success The theme of Continuous Learning Tracks and Study success was chosen by the E-Merge Board to illustrate the collaboration between the E-Merge institutions. It is closely in keeping with a number of national trends in higher education, as are also taking shape in the context of SURF and NAP. An E-Merge Strategy Day was organised on 31 October 2008 and around thirty members of staff from the Institutions took part. Six project outlines were established on the basis of several reports of concrete problems; four of them were selected to be developed further. One project was dropped during the subsequent planning phase and another added, resulting in the four projects. Read more The four new projects are: E-Merge Experts & Expertise Hub: Interventions for Study Success To provide access to initiatives and expertise in relation to interventions in Continuous Learning Tracks and Study Success in the four E-Merge institutions. The primary aim of the project is to identify and make available in digital form the expertise and experience relating to Continuous Learning Tracks and Study Success in the form of a structured information and communication platform for experts within the E-Merge institutions. The High Five project by the HHS will be used as the first case study to collect and exchange information and experiences. This project will entail the initiation of a series of interventions in courses, related to the five main factors surrounding study delays and drop-out of non-western students. The secondary aim of the project is dissemination: to ensure that the combined knowledge is available to everyone and that experience will circulate. This substantive aim of the project will be supported by a technical component. Professionals within the E-Merge institutions who are involved in Continuous Learning Tracks and Study Success. E-Coach The percentage of students who achieve their propedeuse (first-year certificate) within two years and who graduate within four years is falling. E-coaching can help to increase the study results on the programmes. To develop an instrument which can monitor study progress quickly and clearly. That instrument is the Electronic study coach. E-Coach is complementary to the institutions study monitoring systems and can, in its criterion-directed, automated and web-based form, inform various interested parties about study delays incurred by individual students. Reports are requested by means of search commands. Search commands can be stored and performed again later. Specific data can thus be accessed quickly, on request or through an automatic subscription. Each search command can specify which interested parties need to be informed. A tailor-made text can then be formulated for each group to be sent with the performance report. The project is in keeping with the institutions various study monitoring systems, models for study support and user needs and requirements. Examples of interested parties are student career advisors, year coordinators, cluster office staff and, of course, the students themselves. Master's degree programme intake The Universities of Leiden and Delft offer a wide range of Master s degree programmes. The Hogeschool Leiden and the Hague University of Applied Sciences also have their own Master s programmes, but provide increasing numbers of students who transfer to the two universities. All four institutions also want to increase their intake of Dutch and international students into their Master s degree programmes. The basic principle of the project is to help increase the Master's programme intake. The key question in this project is: How can you give future students an insight into the content, level and study programme compatibility of a Master s degree programme? This will be done by offering an introduction module and bridging courses in the form of OpenCourseWare (OCW) and Open Educational Resources (OER) for each Master s programme. Each module will be a combination of teaching materials by means of which potential students will be able to get a good idea of the kind of teaching on the Master s programme in question. Dutch and international hogeschool and university students with an interest in Master s degree programmes at the E-Merge institutions.

CTO TU Delft: Printversion of :16 Knowledge sharing leads to knowledge increase Today s students are expected to be able to formulate (and act upon) reflective questions within their profession as a driving force for continued development. By exchanging knowledge and experiences, both in text and in sound and image, professional behaviour will change and theories of practice will be adjusted. This means that students have to play an active role in social knowledge networks, which link experts, alumni, lecturers and students. The aim of the project is to link experts and students from knowledge institutions, society and the business community in order to find answers to their own questions and to develop new knowledge. To that end, a platform will be created, both socially and technically, to share and increase knowledge. The platform will be used to encourage the exchange of knowledge between students and experts or alumni. It can also be used to bring about synergy between professional networks and educational and research networks. A crucial factor is the creation of a built-in reward system, which would generate incentives for active participation. Otherwise, the information in the network soon becomes outdated, as a result of which participation falls. The platform being developed should halt this process. The fact that users will find experts effective and actually get answers is what distinguishes this project from, for example, LinkedIn. Experts, lecturers, students, alumni. More information? Visit the E-Merge website: SSC ICT publication series: The second SSC ICT publication has now been issued: Blackboard Portfolio in your Educational practice. E-Portfolio as an instrument for development, assessment and presentation of academic skills. This publication explains the possibilities of the E-Portfolio, making use of the Blackboard Portfolio. The E-Portfolio is discussed from a theoretical and practical perspective. Read more Here you will find a summary of this publication. The complete publication can be found on the ICTO website: Summary In 2008, the faculties of Architecture (A), Industrial Design Engineering (IDE), Aerospace Engineering (AE) and Applied Sciences (AS) began the implementation of an E-Portfolio. As part of the Strategic Educational Resources (SOM) promotion programme, these faculties receive functional, technical and financial support from the Shared Service Centre ICT (SSC-ICT) and Educational & Student Affairs (O&S). With this E-Portfolio, the faculties aim to provide better support and guidance for students in the development of their (academic) skills. The E-Portfolio is an instrument with which the development, the validation and the presentation of academic competence can be supported and facilitated. The SSC-ICT provides the Blackboard Portfolio, by means of which the E-Portfolio can be created. This Blackboard Portfolio forms part of the Blackboard digital learning environment which enables both students and lecturers to get to work quickly and easily. This publication explains the possibilities of the E-Portfolio, making use of the Blackboard Portfolio. The E-Portfolio is discussed from a theoretical and practical perspective. Chapter 1 gives a brief outline of the background upon which the need for an E-Portfolio is based. The method of assessment and validation of skills will depend heavily on the course and the teaching methods used. It is, however, possible to adopt a general approach in respect of presentation and reporting for a clearer line in the comparison of portfolios. The Portfolio concept will be explored further in Chapter 2. Portfolio is an instrument in which the owner purposely incorporates (a selection of) presentable artefacts. These artefacts give an indication of the level or development of the acquired (academic) skills. Depending on the incorporated artefacts, the portfolio can be used in various ways. The applications can be defined by the terms 'Development portfolio', 'Assessment portfolio' and 'Showcase portfolio'. Before the various applications of the E-Portfolio are illustrated by means of practical examples, Chapter 3 looks at the services offered by the SSC-ICT and the SSC-E&SA in respect of the E-Portfolio. These applications, also types of portfolio, form the basis for Chapters 4, 5 and 6. For each type of portfolio, a brief theoretical background is given, followed by the practical experience of a number of faculties and services at TU Delft. There is, however, more practical experience of the E-Portfolio within TU Delft. This SSC-ICT publication is unable to elaborate on all these practical experiences. To give an idea nonetheless, Annex 1 contains a fact sheet with a rundown of all Portfolio projects that have been initiated since 2008 in the context of the Strategic Educational Resources (SOM) programme. Even outside the context of SOM, however, an increasing number of initiatives are taking place in various faculties in respect of the use of the portfolio system. Lastly, Annex 2 provides a helping hand in relation to the implementation process. But before moving on to that, it is important to first establish a basis for the Portfolio concept. With this second SSC-ICT, the SSC-ICT aims to give a straightforward insight into the possibilities offered by an E-Portfolio in day-to-day educational practice at TU Delft. We hope that we have thus provided you with enough help. More information? Martijn Ouwehand: g.m.ouwehand@tudelft.nl; Tel ; Digital Assessment Update With the announcement that Etude is to disappear, digital assessment has become an important item on campus. We have

4 of :16 also noticed that with the increasing number of students, more and more lecturers are finding out about the possibility of taking practice tests and tests for a bonus point digitally. Initial analysis of the status of digital assessments on campus has shown that various assessment systems are currently used for this purpose. Given that it is not possible to support all systems from the central ICT and Educational & Student Affairs organisation, choices have to be made. Read more Blackboard and Maple TA are the main supporting assessment systems. Etude will remain available until September Questionmark Perception is currently only available for pilots. Before we can make a definitive decision on this, we need more experience of the various possibilities offered by this package. COZ is used by several faculties, but it is not one of the centrally supported systems. Etude users will be supported in the transition to Blackboard or Maple TZ. Lecturers who have not yet been in touch with ICT should contact the 'digital assessment project leader, Meta Keijzer-de Ruijter Initial studies have shown that the required support in digital assessment is minimal. Lecturers often have to find everything out for themselves. This costs a great deal of time and energy. The required support can be divided as follows: Educational: Lecturers can ask for advice through ELS (E-learning Support) or SOC (Snel Onderwijs Consult [Quick & Easy Teaching Consultations]) on how best to assess and with what software/systems. How do you formulate good assessment questions and compilation of tests and exams. Assessment analysis. Organisational: The lecturer can submit an application at one central point for the use of a particular system. Facilitating the exchange of item banks. Setting up user groups and workshops for Blackboard and Maple TA. Supervising digital exam sessions. Technical: Software is incorporated in ICT s management organisation. Technical support in exam sessions (ICT on standby for emergencies). A workshop on Assessment with Maple TA is being organised on Monday 24 August in the context of Digital Assessment. Those who are interested should send an to the project leader, Meta Keijzer-de Ruijter. Mobile Learning Spring School: The Mobile Learning Spring School took place at the Open University in Heerlen from 13 to 15 May. This Spring School was organised by SURF and involved an extensive programme. Meta Keijzer, Educational Advisor of the SSC-ICT (3xO department Education, Research & Organisation) took part in this Spring School on mobile learning on behalf of TU Delft and has written a short report on it in this newsletter. Read more The Spring School focused on teaching methods and the added value of mobile learning and there were demonstrations and case studies on topics such as: Voting with the aid of PDAs. What was unusual in this case was that the presentation of the questions also included hotspot questions. This meant that it was possible to present X-ray images to medical students. A step in the right direction towards authentic learning. Voting by SMS was presented by SendSteps. The advantage of SMS is that the lecturer no longer needs to give out voting devices (and get them back again afterwards). A major point of discussion among those present was, however, whether students would be willing to vote by SMS, given that text messages cost money. The supplier was sure that, with the current SMS bundles, this should not present any problem. In any event, SendSteps now has a contract with SURF so that educational institutions can use the system at a highly favourable price. Link between the physical and the virtual world: The packages MScapeand Gamesatelierwere discussed in this respect, but the link can also be made by means of barcodes (QR code). One afternoon we were given the opportunity to use Gamesatelier to organise a treasure hunt on the campus. You define points on a Google Map and link it to tasks (films, photos or text). Because you use GPRS with Gamesatelier, you can send the hunters their answers directly. MScape works somewhat more intuitively but has fewer possibilities (at least as long as you don t want to do any programming). The main difference, however, lies in the software and licences: Gamesatelier is licensed software and runs on Symbian. MScape is freeware and runs on Windows Mobile. The Open University itself was busy experimenting with barcodes. The result of this presentation is that the laptop project posters will soon feature a QR code with which you can access the website directly. To be able to scan the barcode, however, you have to install a code reader on your mobile. You can find that at The E-readers were also featured during this Spring School. The Leiden University Medical Center did a pilot which looked at whether lecture notes in PDF format on an E-reader were of help when revising for an exam. The students were very taken with the handy format of the lecture notes, which did benefit the 'mobile learning' (learning in a place other than the library or study). A disadvantage, however, turned out to be that leafing through the lecture notes, which students frequently did during their revision, was too time-consuming. The presentation by Peter de Jong can be found on Slideshare. is terug te vinden op Slideshare. For a full report of the Spring School, I would refer you to Linda Tambuysers blog. You can read a more personal report on my own blog: OC Focus teaching seminars and masterclasses:

5 of :16 In May 2009, OC Focus began a series of new workshops about ICT in Education. On offer were teaching seminars and masterclasses. A teaching seminar is a 2-hour interactive presentation, during which educational theory is alternated with practical examples. Teaching seminars are intended to provide lecturers with an insight into the didactic possibilities offered by ICT in education and to encourage lecturers to delve more deeply into a particular ICTO subject, for example by taking a masterclass. Read more Masterclasses are in-depth workshops lasting 3.5 hours which aim to provide lecturers with sufficient information on how to use a particular ICT resource in their own teaching practice. Hands-on work with ICT tools is thus an important part of the masterclass. The first round of the three teaching seminars has already been completed successfully: Activating students in lectures with ICT (16 participants) Digital assessment and examination (9 participants) Designing online education (12 participants) The first masterclass on the use of digital classroom boards in education will take place on Thursday 25 June from to If you would like more information or are interested in taking a teaching seminar or masterclass, please contact Sofia Dopper: s.m.dopper@tudelft.nl; Tel OpenCourseWare in the news In the past period, a lot of new courses have been published on At this moment there are 31 courses online.
