7 Course Outline for Part-time Cantonese Training Modules Applicable mainly to Programme B: Foundation Certificate Programme in Integrated Chinese Communication for Workplace Partly applicable to Programme A: Foundation Certificate Programme in Chinese as a Foreign / Second Language (Cantonese) (Please refer to programme brochure for programme requirement) At beginner level, the modules focus on oral skills and listening comprehension, with proficiencyoriented activities based on useful vocabulary items, daily expressions and a wide variety of patterns. Upon intermediate and advanced level, more topics and activities will be linked to the needs shared by students of the similar profession or background. For reference only, students are usually expected to spend no less than 4 hours a week on revision to make progress. A B CP2101 Elementary Cantonese I CP2102 Elementary Cantonese II Introduction to Cantonese sounds and tones. Topics: Greetings, at school, time and date, a shopping day. Topics: Talk about hobbies, telling location, meet my family, tour around HK, in the office. CP210 Intermediate Cantonese I Topics: dining out, describing people, having fun, shopping around, going to doctor. CP2104 Intermediate Cantonese II Topics: talking about media, working life, going abroad, moving into a new house, when I was young. CP2105 Upper Intermediate Cantonese I Topics: hiring a helper, a day in the office, entertainment and sports, dinner at teacher s home, at a wedding party. CP2106 Upper Intermediate Cantonese II Topics: at the airport, an evening get-together, seeing a film together, discussing travel plans, talking about hobbies. CP2107 Advanced Cantonese I Topics: looking for a job, buying a computer and connecting to the web, renting a flat in HK, moving to a new home, going to the doctor. CP2108 Advanced Cantonese II Topics: picked pocket, Hong Kong news media, Hong Kong transportation, Hong Kong fashion, Hong Kong dining. 7

8 Course Outline for Part-time Integrated Chinese Reading Modules Applicable mainly to Programme C: Foundation Certificate Programme in Chinese Reading Programme B: Foundation Certificate Programme in Integrated Chinese Communication for Workplace (Please refer to programme brochure for programme requirement) The new integrated CLC Chinese reading modules provide comprehensive training on Chinese reading and writing of traditional Chinese characters based on real life situations. They are solid training courses taught in simple Cantonese with supplementary English explanation on reading and character recognition; from daily living context to professional setting and from sentence level to discourse level. For reference only, students are usually expected to spend no less than 4 hours a week on revision to make progress. B C CLCC220B Integrated Chinese Reading I An elementary course which provides comprehensive training on reading of traditional Chinese characters based on real life situations. The course is taught in simple Cantonese with supplementary English explanation. It helps students to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings. Such training would be based on various sources including basic readings like menus, maps, signages, as well as speaking and listening input such as situational videos, announcements and instructions, etc. It will focus on recognition of Chinese characters and readings at sentence level. CLCC0 Chinese Reading II This intermediate course helps students to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings. Such training would be based on various sources including reading materials like notices, s, as well as speaking and listening input such as situational videos, discussions, etc. It will focus on recognition of Chinese characters and readings at paragraph level. CLCC4B Chinese Reading III An advanced course to introduce the use of Chinese characters with real life examples and contextualized exercises in a wide variety of settings. It will focus on recognition of Chinese characters and readings at discourse level. CLCC450B Advanced Chinese Reading An advanced course to introduce the use of Chinese characters with authentic materials and contextualized exercises in professional settings. Readings will be based on materials such as prose, argumentative essays, descriptive essays, drama scripts, etc. CLCC46C/ CLCC46D Newspaper Reading An advanced course designed to improve students language ability through the reading and discussion of selections from newspapers in standard written Chinese. Topics include international relations, political news, crime, economic news, accidents, etc. The Centre reserves the right to start or cancel a course due to operational concern. 9 Course Outline for Full-time/ Mixed mode Elementary to Intermediate Cantonese and Chinese Reading Modules Applicable mainly to Programme D: Certificate Programme in Chinese as a Foreign/ Second Language (Cantonese) Partly applicable to Programme C: Foundation Certificate Programme in Chinese Reading Programme B: Foundation Certificate Programme in Integrated Chinese Communication for Workplace (Please refer to programme brochure for programme requirement) Level 1 It is designed for beginning students of Cantonese. These courses will focus on oral skills and listening comprehension. Proficiency-oriented activities will be based on approximately 0 vocabulary items and a wide variety of patterns and expressions. CLCC111 Application of Vocabulary & Grammar I An elementary course designed to familiarize students with the use of basic vocabulary and grammar points. Vocabulary introduced based on everyday conversations and daily usage. Focus will be on appropriateness in application. CLCC112 Oral Skills Practice I An elementary course focused on students fluency in communication with basic vocabulary and grammar points through various kinds of speaking practice. Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc. CLCC11 Communication in Context I An elementary course designed to familiarize students with basic vocabulary and grammar points through language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises. Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc. CLCC114 Listening Comprehension Skills I This elementary course focuses on building up students listening ability in real life context. Everyday settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc. CLCC115 Basic Presentation Skills & Daily Situations This elementary course helps students to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings. Tasks like picture description, speaking topics and simple presentation will be adopted to train students in presentation with various everyday settings. B C D 9

10 Level 2 It is designed for students who have completed Elementary Cantonese or with equivalent competence in Cantonese, emphasizing oral skills and listening comprehension, with more exposure to grammar points. Students will be exposed to more terms and expressions in Cantonese based on approximately 0 additional vocabulary items and related patterns and expressions. Students will be trained to have language proficiency at sentence level. CLCC221 Application of Vocabulary & Grammar II An intermediate course designed to familiarize students with the use of more vocabulary and grammar points. Vocabulary introduced based on everyday conversations and daily usage. Focus will be on appropriateness in application. CLCC222 Oral Skills Practice II An intermediate course focused on students fluency in speaking practice in real life settings, such as going to the airport, attending a wedding party, going to see movies, discussing travel plans, talking about hobbies etc. CLCC22 Communication in Context II An intermediate course designed to familiarize students with newly acquired vocabulary and grammar points through language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises in real life settings. CLCC224 Listening Comprehension Skills II An intermediate course focused on building up students listening ability. Real life settings are introduced such as going to the airport, attending a wedding party, going to see movies, discussing travel plans, talking about hobbies etc. CLCC225 Basic Presentation Skills & Daily Situations II This intermediate course helps students to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings. Real life settings are introduced such as buying a computer, going to the doctor, renting a flat, moving to a new home etc. CLCC5 Basic Presentation Skills & Daily Situations III This upper intermediate course helps students to build up abilities in presenting basic ideas in real life communication settings. Such training would be based on various sources including reading materials such as notice, , as well as speaking and listening input such as situational videos, discussions, etc. (This course is to be first offered in Fall 2016). CLCC4 Chinese Reading III An advanced course to introduce the use of Chinese characters with real life examples and contextualized exercises in a wide variety of settings. It will focus on recognition of Chinese characters and readings at discourse level. CLCC441 Communication in Professional Settings An advanced course designed to help students communicate with extended vocabulary in advanced settings through real life language tasks/activities and contextualized exercises. Topics include social issues in Hong Kong, environmental issues, Chinese custom and religion etc. CLCC444 Advanced Listening Comprehension Skills An advanced course focused on building up students listening ability in advanced context and presenting students with multi-media authentic materials. Topics for discussion include social issues in Hong Kong, environmental issues, Chinese custom and religion etc. CLCC450 Advanced Chinese Reading An advanced course to introduce the use of Chinese characters with authentic materials and contextualized exercises in professional settings. Readings will be based on materials such as prose, argumentative essays, descriptive essays, drama scripts, etc. B C 11

12 CLCC451 Topical Communication (HK Issues) An advanced course designed to build up the students confidence in using a variety of vocabulary in formal settings through specific topics and contextualized exercises. Topics include various local & international news and issues related to our society, such as education system, economy and immigration. CLCC454 Listening Comprehension Skills in Professional Settings An advanced course focused on building up students listening ability in professional context and presenting students with multi-media authentic materials. Topics for discussion include various local & international news and issues related to our society, such as education system, economy and immigration. CLCC460 China Issues An advanced course designed to familiarize students with some Chinese literature and writing. Students will be exposed to selected classical Chinese stories. It will focus on reading ability and exposure to Chinese culture. CLCC461 Cantonese Colloquialism An advanced course designed to introduce Cantonese colloquialism used in various settings in Hong Kong. In less formal settings, lot of colloquial expressions can be found in discourse. This course helps students to understand and be able to use common colloquial expressions in real life. B C CLCC46 Newspaper Reading An advanced course designed to improve students' language ability through the reading and discussion of selections from newspapers in standard written Chinese. Topics include international relations, political news, crime, economic news, accidents, etc. CLCC491 Communication in Context Cantonese PRINCH (Advanced Level), Fall term only This is a compulsory course offered in Fall Term for Advanced Diploma students and an elective course to students targeting other level award. PRINCH allows intermediate and advanced Cantonese learners to practice what they have learned in class through a variety of activities in the target culture, an approach that has been recognized by professionals and highly recommended as a most effective means to cultivate pragmatic competence of language learners. Students will be assigned to small groups led by trained teaching assistants to explore different themes in Hong Kong by visit on alternate weeks. Themes may include arts and culture, history and traditions, government & policies, contemporary and folk culture etc. Students are expected to prepare and give oral presentation related to the visit on the weeks following the visit which will then be assessed by the teaching assistants and/ or the lecturer. An activity fee will be charged together with the tuition fee in this programme to provide for small group counseling and visit activities.
