Royal Holloway and Bedford New College PROGRAMME SPECIFICATION This document describes the Honours degree programme in Business and Enterprise offered by Pearson College and validated by Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. This specification is valid for new entrants from September The aims of this programme are: To provide the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop careers in a business environment, whether that be commercial or charitable, UK-based or international, and whether within a large blue chip listed company, a small-to-medium-sized enterprise, or as self-employed entrepreneurs; To integrate academic knowledge and understanding with workplace relevance and application; To develop skills appropriate to, but not restricted to, graduate careers in business with the potential for management positions and general employability, including self-employment. The programme is the equivalent of the final year of an undergraduate honours degree and takes four terms to complete (two terms if accelerated). Pearson College runs three start dates per calendar year, with terms typically commencing in January, May and September. Students therefore can commence their programme of study in September and complete their studies by the December of the following year. Students who commence in January would complete their studies by April of the following year. The standard pathway (for working students) The programme is delivered in three stages, over four terms. The taught phase covers the first two terms, during which students will undertake four course units. The contextualisation phase covers the third term and requires students to apply their learning from the first phase in a work context. Students will engage in discussion and analysis of contemporary emerging issues within their chosen sector, and earn credits from relevant experience-based learning. The independent phase (fourth term) requires each student to design and complete, in consultation with their supervisor, an independent and substantial piece of work in the form of an original Major Project. As part of the support extended for this Major Project there will be training in research skills to help students develop their research capabilities. An accelerated pathway (for non-working students) The programme is also available in an accelerated pathway for students who are not working full-time. Students on this model will complete 60 credits per term instead of the 30 credits per term outlined above, and may therefore complete the programme in two terms. This means that in the first term students will study four course units together, attending one seminar (team meeting) and one workshop (to substitute for work experience) in each course unit per week. Non-working students who elect not to accelerate their studies will also be required to attend and participate in the workshops. In the second term, students will contextualise the learning undertaken in the first term through workshops, which will simulate the working environment which forms the basis of the Business in Context course unit. They will also complete the Contemporary Issues in Business course unit and undertake a Major Project. Learning outcomes Teaching, learning and assessment Details of the programme structure(s) Progression and award requirements Student support and guidance Admission requirements Further learning and career opportunities Indicators of quality and standards List of programmes, with details of awards, degree titles, accreditation and teaching arrangements This document provides a summary of the main features of the programme, and of the outcomes which a student might reasonably be expected to achieve if full advantage is taken of the learning opportunities provided. Further information is contained in the Pearson College prospectus, the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College Regulations, and in the Student Handbook issued to students through the Pearson College Virtual Learning Environment ( VLE ) upon enrolment. While Royal Holloway
and Pearson College keep all of their information for prospective applicants and students under review, programmes and the availability of individual courses are necessarily subject to change at any time, and prospective applicants are therefore advised to seek confirmation of any factors which might affect their decision to follow a specific programme. In turn, Royal Holloway and Pearson College will inform applicants and students, as soon as is practicable, of any substantial changes which might affect their studies. Learning outcomes The programme is designed around enhancing the employability of students and their long term career prospects, and has been designed with relevant industry expertise. It aims to provide a solid theoretical and academic foundation with the ability to, and experience of using this in a practical way to resolve problems and capitalise on opportunities within a business context. These two elements of academic understanding and practical application are evenly balanced throughout the programme. Knowledge and understanding Graduates should develop knowledge and understanding of the following areas: The nature of business organisations, the external environment in which they operate, and how they are managed, and how these three elements interconnect; Essential concepts underpinning core business functions of marketing, customers, finance, human resources, operations, communication and information systems; Strategic management, entrepreneurship, innovation, and the international business environment; A range of pervasive and ethical issues such as sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and diversity; Contemporary issues within the UK, European and international business environment; Key theoretical concepts underpinning all of the above; How all of the above can be applied in a practical way to the contemporary workplace either to resolve problems, improve processes or to capitalise on opportunities. Skills and other attributes Graduates should develop the following skills and attributes, all of which are transferable to a wide range of positions and industries: Cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis; Effective problem solving and decision making skills, using appropriate quantitative and qualitative frameworks; The ability to identify and analyse business problems and opportunities, articulate same, and develop proposals to resolve problems or capitalise on opportunities; Effective communication skills, oral and written, live ( synchronous ) and non-live ( asynchronous ), using a range of media which are widely used in business; Numeracy and quantitative skills including data analysis, interpretation and extrapolation; Effective self-management in terms of time management, planning and motivation; Effective team working, including: leadership, teambuilding, influencing and project management skills, and being able to manage successfully upwards and downwards within a management hierarchy; Interpersonal skills of listening, negotiating, persuasion, collaboration, confidence and presentation and a sensitivity to diversity in terms of people, cultures, business and management issues; The ability to conduct research into business and management issues, both individually and as part of a team, including the ability to: identify appropriate and useful research problems; evaluate a range of business data; identify suitable sources of information and methodologies; carry out research and analysis; present results in a suitable format, and develop recommendations; An ability to take responsibility for one s own learning, and to become an independent, reflective and adaptable life-long learner. Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy The teaching, learning and assessment strategy has been designed to facilitate the acquisition by students of the knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes which learners should develop during their time on the programme. The way in which the programme aims to achieve this overall objective is to replicate, so far as possible, the modern business working environment. This extends to both the form and content of the programme. In particular, collaborating and networking with other students and lecturers, using technology to assist in communication and teamwork as happens daily in the workplace, applying academic learning and theory to practical problems, and linking the classroom and assessment to industry and employment are key elements in the design of the degree.
Programme structure The programme consists of three stages offered over two terms (14 weeks each) (accelerated pathway) or over four terms (14 weeks each) (standard pathway). Students on the accelerated pathway are expected to complete 60 credits per term, while those on the standard pathway are expected to 30 credits per term. Pearson College offers three terms per year typically commencing in September, January and May. Please note that not all course units run each term. A full list of course units to be offered in the forthcoming term is available on the Pearson College VLE. 3 Stages The programme moves through three stages of increasingly independent learning: Stage One Taught phase (60 credits) Students must take the following four course units: Strategic Management 12.5% (15 credits) Entrepreneurship in Business 12.5% (15 credits) Operations Leadership and Management 12.5% (15 credits) International Business 12.5% (15 credits) Students on the standard pathway will take Stage One over two terms (30 credits in each term), while those on the accelerated pathway will take the courses in this Stage in one term. Stage Two Contextualisation phase (30 credits) Students must take the following course units: Contemporary Issues in Business 12.5% (15 credits) Business in Context 12.5% (15 credits) Stage Three Independent phase (30 credits) Students must take the following course unit: Major Project 25% (30 credits) Students on the standard pathway will take Stages Two and Three over two terms (30 credits in each term), while those on the accelerated pathway will take the courses in these Stages in one term. Progression and award requirements Students must complete and pass courses equivalent to 120 credits. In order to gain the award of BSc in Business and Enterprise (Honours) students must pass all the course units (120 credits). Students are considered for the award and classified on the basis of a weighted average for the level 6 course units studied and passed as part of this programme. Marks obtained from learning prior to level 6 are not relevant for the purposes of classification of the award. In order to qualify for a degree award, students must gain a weighted average of at least 40%. Student support and materials All BSc students will be allocated a Personal Supervisor, who will effectively act as their personal tutor throughout the programme. Students will meet formally with with their Personal Supervisor at least once every term, and will be able to arrange meetings with them on an ad hoc basis throughout their studies; In each course unit, students will be allocated a supervisor whom they can approach for advice and guidance on their academic progress in that particular course unit at any point of the relevant term. Supervisors will be available in person at contact sessions and online during office hours; If a student experiences issues or problems which their Personal Supervisor or Course unit Supervisors are unable to resolve, the student may contact the national Course unit Leaders or Programme
Manager. They will be available in person at designated points of the term at the relevant teaching centre; at the national workshops and residential; and online during office hours; Students may access a detailed Student Handbook and Course Unit Specifications on the VLE; Students may access our online Careers Service at any point during their studies or following programme completion; During their studies, students will have access to comprehensive learning materials for each programme and Pearson College s Online Library through our VLE, enabling them to access journals, texts and other learning resources at any time. Students will be trained during Induction on how to make full use of these resources by the library team, who will be available online throughout their studies to provide ongoing guidance and support; Pearson s Learning Support Officer will be available to provide advice and guidance to all students with special needs throughout their studies; Students will be able to raise issues of concern regarding the programme through the Staff-Student Committee; termly feedback surveys; the online feedback channel; and post-programme completion, the alumni feedback meeting. Admission requirements The admission requirements for the programme are: Higher National Diploma in Business; Or Foundation Degree in Business (subject to a transcript audit to ensure appropriate course units have been completed); Or Pearson College Diagnostic Test and Interview. Students whose first language is not English will have to demonstrate their linguistic capacity to successfully complete the programme. We welcome applications from students with a range of backgrounds and experiences and students with work experience who may not have formal entry qualifications. In considering applications, we will be looking for a cohort of students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, each of which have the ability to succeed on the programme, to make an active contribution to the student cohort and to the wider society on programme completion. Further learning and career opportunities We would expect graduates to either progress within their existing field of employment or to gain employment in relevant areas of business, and in either case to thrive in their selected profession and reach their full potential. We would expect them to quickly gain a strong understanding of the needs of their employer, and to be able to contribute to the development of their employers business from day one. We would hope to see many of them rise to leadership positions within an appropriate period of time post graduation, and for some to go on to senior managerial and directorial posts. We would also expect a reasonable number to become entrepreneurs, and to establish and grow their own businesses. The skills and knowledge gained during the programme will be applicable across a wide range of sectors and organisational entities. Students will be given the opportunity to specialise in a sector of their choice within a number of the course units. The programme is being designed in such a way as to maximise the future career prospects of its graduates. At the outset, students will design a Career Development Plan in close consultation with their Personal Supervisor, who will provide guidance on how to build a compelling portfolio. This will include advice on such things as: the choice and structure of their Major Project; future learning pathways such as professional accreditation; the undertaking of extracurricular activities and volunteer work; and obtaining relevant work placements. It is expected that this plan will evolve as students progress through the programme under the supervision of their Personal Supervisor. Where appropriate, students will be directed to the careers service for specific guidance on particular areas. The programme has many features that are specifically designed to enhance the employability and what may be termed the promotability of its graduates, and to help them perform well in applications for jobs and promotions. For example, the Contemporary Issues in Business course unit is designed to ensure students have a strong grasp of contemporary issues and current affairs relating to their sector of choice, and are able to show to employers that they have considered such issues intelligently and analytically. The Major Project will be unique to each student and designed to demonstrate the student s grasp of theory and knowledge, as well as their capacity to apply such knowledge to practical problems
within the context of a substantial and original piece of work. The teaching and learning model is designed to ensure that students have regular experience of communication and presentation techniques, and are confident in working with a wide range of people in both face-to-face and online environments. Students will have experience of working as part of a team, as well as acting as team leaders. The blend of academic study and practical application embodied in the programme will also equip students to progress to postgraduate study on Masters programmes, postgraduate diplomas or professionally accredited programmes. The Careers Service will be available to students throughout their studies and post completion, in order to advise them of their options and how best to maximise their potential. Indicators of quality and standards Pearson is a very well respected and successful education company. It is a UK company, first incorporated in 1844 and now a blue chip company listed on the FTSE 100. Pearson is the largest academic publisher in the world and also owns Penguin Publishing and the Financial Times. It is the world leader in publishing textbooks in business and management, and is therefore able to provide first class resources to its students. Its wide network of educational and commercial activities means that it can work with excellent academics, often leaders in their fields, and leading companies and employers, to provide a high quality course design and student experience. The programme, including courses, assessments, syllabus, learning outcomes and the teaching and learning model was designed by a Pearson Programme Design Team, which includes an Academic Lead, an Industry Lead and a Student Experience Lead, all of whom provided input into the design. This ensures that we balance the academic requirements for a rigorous undergraduate honours degree with the needs of employers and the aspirations of students. Pearson is responsible for the day-to-day management of the programme, including the teaching and learning, course design and learning resources, assessments, student experience, and student services. Students will be enrolled as Pearson students for the duration of their studies. Royal Holloway and Bedford New College s position as one of the UK s leading research-intensive institutions was confirmed by the results of the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE). The new scoring system for the RAE 2008 measures research quality in four categories, with the top score of 4* indicating quality that is world-leading and of the highest standards in terms of originality, significance and rigour. 60% of the College s research profile is rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, outperforming the national average of 50%. The College is ranked 16th in the UK for research of 4* standard and 18th for 3* and 4* research. Royal Holloway is responsible for the quality of the degree, its academic standards and its validation, and therefore works closely with Pearson College to ensure that the syllabus, assessments and student experience are appropriate and meet relevant requirements of the QAA s Academic Infrastructure (replaced by the UK Quality Code for Higher Education). List of programmes The programme is taught by staff of Pearson College and leads to an award of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. The programme is not subject to accreditation by a professional body. The QAA subject benchmark statement in General Business and Management describes the general features one might expect from Honours degrees in the subject and can therefore be used as a point of reference when reading this document (see The UCAS code is given in parentheses ( Single Honours Degree programmes in Business and Enterprise BSc Hons Business and Enterprise (N100/N190)
