1 BAE 435/535 Course Syllabus BAE 435/535 Precision Agriculture Technology Section All SPRING Credit Hours Course Description Overview of technology available for implementation of a comprehensive precision agriculture program. Topics include computers, GPS, sensors, mechanized soil sampling, variable rate control system, yield monitors, and postharvest processing controls. Applications of precision agriculture in crop planning, tillage, planting, chemical applications, harvesting and postharvest processing. Credit may not be received for BAE 435 and BAE 535 Learning Outcomes Students completing this course will be able to: recognize types and sources of data and information necessary for a comprehensive precision agriculture program evaluate GPS systems and their applications explain basic operating principles of sensors used in precision agriculture evaluate control system performance of site-specific management and postharvest assess yield monitor performance and limitations Students completing BAE 535 will, in addition to the 5 objectives above: formulate a comprehensive precision agricultuer technology management plan for a selected production enterprise Course Structure Campus Section Contact hours for the campus section of the course consist of 2 lecture periods (50 minutes each) and a lab session (165 minutes) each week. Lecture is used to present and discuss new topics, explore the technology, and take exams. The laboratory period will be used for hands on activity to support the lecture topics. Distance Section Distance students will follow the lecture topics via streaming media recordings. These will be posted on the course website weekly. Lab activity will be accomplished through a combination of software applications, video recordings, and computer based simulations. These resouces will be posted on the course web site as well.

Distance students are not required to attend the lectures or labs, content for distance students will be handled onlilne. Distance students may attend the lab sessions if they wish to participate in the activities in a hands-on environment. Some lab activity will take place at Lake Wheeler Field Laboratory. Requisites and Restrictions Prerequisites Junior, senior or graduate standing. Transportation Transportation will be provided by: University owned vehicles will be provided when campus students are scheduled to participate in lab activity at Lake Wheeler Field Laboratory. Students may provide their own transportation to the field lab if preferred.. Non-scheduled class time for field trips or out-of-class activities is NOT required for this class. Safety & Risk Assumptions Some lab activity at Lake Wheeler Field Lab will require use of tractors and farm equipment. All safety rules and guidelines must be followed at all times. Grading Grade Components Component Weight Details Participation 10% Students in the campus section are expected to attend all class meetings and laboratories. Participation will be recorded at random times at the instructor's discretion using the TurningPoint Response system. It is the student's responsibility to insure they are properly recorded. Students in the distance section are expected to access lecture media files and lab files on a timely and regular basis. Participation will be assessed through on-line response.

4 Component Weight Details Homework 20% Homework assignments will be assigned to cover topics outlined in the lecture and laboratory. Homework assignments and their due date will be posted on the course web site. Homework assignments will not be accepted late unless an extension is approved by the instructor. Extensions will only be granted in the case of documented illness or events beyond the students control. Extensions will not be granted if the student forgets to complete the assignment on time. Laboratory Excercises and Reports 30% Labortory reports must be completed as indicated in the laboratory assignment list. Labs must be submitted on the due date indicated. Labs will be graded on technical content, thoroughness and neatness. Credit will not be given for sloppy or incomplete work. Lab reports will not be accepted more than one week late. Mid Term Exam 15% Final Exam 15 Discussion 10 The mid term exam will cover the first half of the course as indicated in the syllabus. The final exam will cover topics from the second half of the course as indicated in the syllabus. Make up of a missed exam will be allowed only in the case of a documented excused absence. Arrangments must be made immediately with the instructor. Open ended discussion prompts will be posted on the course web site on a regular basis. Students are expected to respond to the prompt within the time alloted. Letter Grades This Course uses Standard NCSU Letter Grading: 97 A A < A- < B+ < B < B- < C+ < C < C- < D+ < D < D- < 63 0 F < 60

5 Requirements for Credit-Only (S/U) Grading In order to receive a grade of S, students are required to take all exams and quizzes, complete all assignments, and earn a grade of C- or better. Conversion from letter grading to credit only (S/U) grading is subject to university deadlines. Refer to the Registration and Records calendar for deadlines related to grading. For more details refer to Requirements for Auditors (AU) Information about and requirements for auditing a course can be found at Auditors are expected to complete all homework assignments and discussion prompts. Auditors are encouraged to participate in lab activity but are not required to submit lab reports. Auditors are not required to take exams. Policies on Incomplete Grades If an extended deadline is not authorized by the instructor or department, an unfinished incomplete grade will automatically change to an F after either (a) the end of the next regular semester in which the student is enrolled (not including summer sessions), or (b) the end of 12 months if the student is not enrolled, whichever is shorter. Incompletes that change to F will count as an attempted course on transcripts. The burden of fulfilling an incomplete grade is the responsibility of the student. The university policy on incomplete grades is located at Late Assignments Late assignments will be accepted only in the case of documented and/or excused hardship or illness. Such late assignments will be accepted without penalty. An excused absence allows the student to submit an assignment late. It does not forgive the student of the responsibility to submit the assignment. Distance students are expected to review all posted lecture and lab media files posted on the website. Absences Policy This course will follow the guidelines for excused vs. unexcused absences as explained in the university attendance regulation: Makeup Work Policy Request for make up of work missed due to an excused absence must be made with the instructor immediately upon return. Examples include online discussions of class topics, and posting of student coursework. All students are expected to respect the privacy of each other by not sharing or using such information outside the course. Electronically-hosted Components: Student discussion posts are viewable by all students in the class. No other individual student assignments will be viewable by any student other than the author.
