3 1 System Requirements The following Web browsers are formally supported and tested for use with SpeechClass: Windows: Internet Explorer version 6 or 7 and Firefox version and above. Mac OS X: Firefox version 1.5 and above. In addition, some SpeechClass resources require Adobe Shockwave Player, Adobe Flash Player, Apple QuickTime (5.0 or above), Java, or Adobe Reader (version 6 or above). The latest versions of these plugins can be downloaded free of charge from Adobe, Sun, or Apple Web sites. To see which plug-ins you have installed and to find installers, click the System Check link from the bottom of the SpeechClass welcome screen or go directly to Note: To view some features of SpeechClass, you may need to turn off your browser s pop-up blocker, and any pop-up blocker(s) in third-party toolbar(s) you may have added to your browser, such as the Google or Yahoo toolbar. For help in doing so, please contact our technical support. Adopting SpeechClass If you don t yet have access to your own SpeechClass course, take the following steps to begin your course activation process: 1. Go to 2. Click ADOPT NOW! and fill in the form that pops up. Be sure to enter all requested information. 3. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the screen. 4. Once you have completed these steps, the course will be created within 48 hours. You will receive all of the necessary information and instructions by .
4 2 Student Access to SpeechClass Your students can register for and access your course once you set it up. To get access to SpeechClass, your students have two options: 1. They can purchase access to SpeechClass directly from our website. 2. If you have ordered SpeechClass access cards, your students can purchase them through the campus bookstore. We can provide you with an electronic handout/syllabus insert and PowerPoint slides to help you explain the registration process to your students. We ve also included directions below for both options. Option One: Purchase Access Directly Via the Site 1. Students can go to click PURCHASE ACCESS TODAY, scroll down to SpeechClass (without e-book) and click Purchase Access. 2. In the new window that appears, students should select their state/province from the drop down menu and then their institution and your course from the additional dropdown menus. 3. Students enter their name and address. Then they create a password and password hint. The password must be at least 4 characters long and should be something memorable. 4. Students can enter payment information including their name as it appears on the credit card; credit card number, expiration date, and billing address, and click NEXT. After confirming their information, they should click on PLACE YOUR ORDER. 5. Once the system has confirmed payment, a thank you screen will display that confirms the student s name, address, username, and password. Students will also receive a confirmation . Note: Students won t be able to change their address once they ve registered, so they must choose an address that will be valid for the duration of the course.
5 3 Option Two: Register with an Activation Code 1. Students can go to click REGISTER YOUR CODE, then scroll down to SpeechClass (without e-book) and click Register Your Code. The registration screen will appear. 2. Students then enter the Activation Code from their access card, their name, and their address. 3. Students create a password and password hint. The password must be at least 4 characters long and should be something memorable. 4. Students register for a specific class by selecting their school location (state/province) from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen. Subsequent drop-down menus allow them to choose their institution and course/instructor. 5. Students then click NEXT at the bottom of the screen, confirm their information on the following screen, and click CREATE ACCOUNT to complete the registration process. Logging in to Your Course Both you and your students should go to to login to the SpeechClass course. Enter your and password in the top-right corner of the page and click LOG IN. Note: If you or your students have trouble with a login id or password, call or contact technical support via at techsupport@bfwpub.com.
6 4 The Home Page Course Title and Description Once you ve logged in, you will arrive at the Home Page. From here, you can access all the information, tools, and resources in SpeechClass. As the instructor, you can access tools to customize this home page to match the needs of your class Home Page Components Customizing SpeechClass As the instructor, you can customize the Home page to address your course needs. Click Customize SpeechClass to access the Customize SpeechClass menu. From here, you can do the following: 1. Click Home page layout to add, remove, or rearrange Home page components. 2. Click Course description to add a course description to your Home page. 3. If you re not in Eastern Standard Time, click Time zone settings to set your time zone. 4. Click Advanced course settings and Set-Up to help you set up your gradebook.
7 5 Viewing the Course as a Student What you see in SpeechClass is often different from what your students see. The current view mode is indicated by either (Student) or (Instructor) after your name in the upperright corner of any screen. 1. To see how your course looks to your students, click view as in the top-left corner of any screen. 2. Click OK to confirm entering Student view. 3. In Student view, you won't be able to modify the course or grade assignments. 4. To return to Instructor view, click view as again, and click OK. Online Help Details on using the many SpeechClass features and tools are available in Online Help. 1. Click the Help button in the lower-left corner of any SpeechClass screen. 2. Explore the information available and close the window when finished. Course Materials Resources such as VideoCentral: Public Speaking, the Video Quizzes, the SpeechClass Upload and Annotation Tool, and the Bedford Speech Outliner are made available to instructors and students. These tools are available directly from the course materials tab. You (but not your students) can also access instructor-specific course materials, such as the instructor s manual and PowerPoint slides. 1. From anywhere in SpeechClass, select the tab for course materials. 2. Select and review several of the listed resources. NEW! The Video Tab Please refer to the "SpeechClass Video Tab Instructor Guide" for information on how to create video assignments simply and easily. NEW! Uploading, Embedding and Annotating Speeches Please refer to the "SpeechClass Video Annotator Instructor Guide" for information on how to post and add comments to speeches. Both guides are in course materials along with other SpeechClass Instructor Resources.
8 6 The Assignment Center SpeechClass offers a wealth of video clips, quizzes, and content you can access to shape your course. You can also create assignments using your own content. Creating and Assigning Quizzes 1. Go to your Assignment Center. Use the Create a new assignment dropdown to select a Quiz and click go. 2. To quickly create a quiz and start adding questions, enter the quiz name (for example, Grammar Quiz) and click Create Instant Quiz. You can come back to the Assignment Center later to set the due date and other settings (for example, you can scramble the questions and/or multiple choice answers in the quiz). (To edit these settings before creating the quiz, you would click Create Quiz & Edit Settings). 3. Now that you have created an instant quiz, you will now be in the question picker. While you could add questions from the hundreds of provided questions in the SpeechClass test bank, try creating a question of your own for now. Under the Create your Own dialog box, use the drop-down to view your options. Select Multiple Choice and click go. 4. In the text field type the question Which of the following is not a form of support for a speech? In the answer fields put examples, stories, testimony, charisma, and statistics, and next to charisma, put 1 point. 5. Click Save. 6. Note that your new question will be listed on the right side of the screen. 7. Now that you have created your own question you may want to see what questions are available to you from the test bank. Under step 2 of From an Existing Question Bank, select chapter 6 and click the go button. 8. You have a lot of question sets to choose from. Click the small blue triangles ( ) to preview the full questions and answers. Use the checkboxes to select some question sets and click the Add Selected Items button. Current questions will be listed on the right side of the screen. Questions can be edited by clicking the pencil icons ( ) and deleted by clicking the ( ) icons. Click the done adding questions link at the top of the screen when you have finished. Back at the Assignment Center, you will see your new quiz added. You can experiment and take the quiz. Click the Remove button associated with the quiz to Unassign it.
9 7 The Gradebook From the SpeechClass Gradebook, you can view and edit your course roster and students grades, as well as create groups of students and set up attendance. For more information, consult the online help. Access your course roster, groups, and attendance manager from these links. Additional functions such as gradebook setup, preferences, import, and export are available from this menu. Students are listed in rows; assignments are listed in columns. Click a column heading to get a menu of options for an assignment or assignment category. Click this button for a printable version of your gradebook. Gradebook Export Use the Gradebook Export option to backup your Gradebook and/or to create a file that can be used to populate a spreadsheet or the gradebook in another course management system. Follow the steps below to export your Gradebook to a CSV (comma separated value) file. 9. From the Gradebook, click the Other Gradebook functions menu at the top of the window and choose Export Grades. 10. Use radio buttons to select Comma Separated format for the export file. Optionally, include Averages, Course ID and select the Percentage or Points output format. 11. Click Export to finish. You will be prompted to save the file with the default file name gradebook.csv.
