Reyes, Economics Department Office: AD II Spring Branch Campus Hours By Appointment See: Professor's My Learning Web Page COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a university-equivalent, college sophomore Principles level course in Macroeconomics. The course curriculum places specific economy-wide emphasis on capitalistic theory, supply and demand analysis, unemployment, inflation, national income accounting, the U.S. banking system, monetary policy, fiscal policy, international trade, competing schools of economic thought and policy alternatives. REQUIRED * COURSE TEXTBOOK PURCHASE: Principles of Economics, Case, Fair & Oster, 10 th edition, Pearson Publishing Co. Includes textbook and required online tutorial pass code. No provisions will be made for the use of any other Economics textbook(s) in this course. The textbook can be used for all ECON 2301 and ECON 2302 courses offered at HCC Northwest College campus locations (Katy Campus; Spring Branch Campus) In an effort to keep student textbook prices to a minimum the Economics Department at the Northwest College and the publishing company, Pearson, arranged for a shrink wrap packet of our text materials. Unfortunately, the textbook publishing company placed a coversheet on the shrinkwrap sold in HCCS Book Stores and the versions it is mailing in online purchases that fails to identify the packet as the 10th edition of Case, Fair, and Oster. The cover sheet identifies itself as a "Customized HCC Version" and/or as a "2012 edition". Pearson Publishing has assured HCC Economics faculty that HCC book store and online purchase packets are, in fact, the 10th edition of Case, Fair, and Oster's Principles of Economics.
3 MyEconLab Online Tutorial - Students enrolled in this course will make use of the online course tutorial, MyEconLab. Your unique and CASE SENSITIVE Course ID number for this course is reyes86385.you must do an initial online registration process using this course ID number in order to use the tutorial throughout the semester. Follow the directions on the next page of this course syllabus. The MyEconLab Registration Process To enroll in a typical course, a student needs to have a: Student access code, a valid credit card, or a PayPal account Students get an access code with a new book purchase or by buying the code separately in a student access kit/card at the campus bookstore. To assist these students, print the instructions and distribute them, along with the course ID for your course. A student who already has a Pearson account performs the steps in Registering and Enrolling in a New Subject below to enroll in a new course. To assist these students, copy the instructions to a document and distribute. You may want to enter your course ID in the space provided in step 2. Note: Students who need to enroll in another course based on the same textbook as a current or previous course should go through their Pearson Account Profile to enroll. FINAL GRADE DETERMINATION: Tests #1 25% of your final grade; Test #2 25% of your final grade; MyEconLab Study Plan 25% of your final grade and Final 25% of your final grade Tests 1, 2, and the final will include multiple-choice questions.
6 MASTERING THE MYECONLAB STUDY PLAN Mastery in the Study Plan will result in a numerical grade of 100. In the absence of a Mastery your FINAL EXAM numerical score will be assigned in this category Late submissions will be assigned grades of 0 and these will be averaged in as part of this component of your final grade. The cumulative average at the end of the semester is electronically recorded in the MyEconLab Gradebook. *The final exam is comprehensive in nature in that it will call on each student to recall and apply economic concepts covered over the course of the semester. However, the 100% multiple-choice question final exam will only include questions on the subject matter covered in the last few weeks of the semester. See the course calendar for chapters covered on each test as well as those included on the final exam. MISSED TESTS/QUIZZES: If or when you miss your first test a long-answer essay question test will be made available to you at the end of the semester. Your must do ALL OF THE FOLLOWING IF YOU MISS A TEST: 1. On the day after a missed test you must deliver a hand-written or typed note to me informing me that you missed a test (verbal notice will not suffice); 2. YOU must call the Spring Branch Campus Testing Center to make an appointment to take your make-up test. The number is: and you must give the Testing Center 24-hour notice before your make-up exam is administered. 3. If you do not show up to take your make-up at the arranged time or if you do not fully comply with ALL of these requirements a score of 0 will be assigned in my grade book and will be averaged in with other scores. The second time you miss a test, a score of 0 will be assigned in my grade book and will be averaged in with other scores. If you take all of the scheduled tests but you miss the final exam you will be assigned a course grade of F unless you contact me by HCCS no later than 24 hours after the scheduled final exam date and time. The final exam make up will be a written long-answer essay exam administered at a time, date, and location determined by the instructor sometime before the electronic submission of final course grades.
7 HCC COURSE ATTENDANCE POLICY: THE LAST DATE TO WITHDRAW IN PERSON FROM THE CLASS IS JULY, 2012 AT 4:30 PM. If you are struggling academically, I d like to hear from you before you decide to withdraw from this course. I might be in a position to offer a number of suggestions in order to improve your chances of successfully completing the course. However, if you are sure you want to withdraw from this course you have until JULY 9, 2012 AT 4:30 PM to do so. Total responsibility lies with you, the student, for withdrawing from the course. Should you decide to simply stop attending class without taking the time to withdraw yourself HCCS policy requires me to assign a final grade of FX at the end of the semester. If you miss four (4) class periods during the semester, you will be assigned a final course grade of FX. Late arrivals (tardiness) for class will be counted as absences and they will be recorded as absences in attendance rolls submitted at the end of the semester. A final grade of FX may very well require that you refund any/all HCCS Financial Aid or Veteran s Assistance funds disbursed to you for this course. Further, if you are a foreign student, a final course grade of FX may adversely your U.S. Immigration foreign student status. Once assigned, I will not change any FX grades. Students are totally responsible for withdrawing themselves from the course. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the appropriate HCC Disability Support Service (DSS) Counselor at the beginning of each semester. Faculty is authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office. After student accommodation letters have been approved by the DSS office and submitted to DE Counseling for processing, students will receive an confirmation informing them of the Instructional Support Specialist assigned to their professor. Students who violate these policies
8 and guidelines will be subject to disciplinary action that could include denial of access to course-related , discussion groups, and chat rooms or being removed from the class. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: The HCCS Student Handbook defines a number of behaviors that constitute violation of the HCCS Academic Dishonesty policy. Disposition of all academic dishonesty incidents will be carried out in a manner as described in the Student Handbook. Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the specific provisions of the HCCS Academic Dishonesty Policy provisions including the following sanctions: 1) Dismissal and or suspension from HCCS; 2) A final grade of F in the course and 3) An appropriate notation on the student s HCCS permanent record. I abhor cheating, lying, and other deceitful behavior whether it exists in the workplace or in the academic or online classroom. I will enforce the HCCS Academic Dishonesty Policy.
