Students who attend classes and who are not properly registered and cleared will not be reinstated into the class and will not receive credit. COURSE DESCRIPTION ACF 93 is a basic algebra course. It is worth 1.0 course units. The purpose of this course is to review basic algebra and prepare you for the other math courses you will need in your college education. At the end of the course, you will receive a grade of Pass or Repeat. If you need to repeat this course, you will take ACF 93 again. You may repeat this course once without permission from the Academic Standards Committee. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS Note: All materials must be brought to every class. Textbook: Developmental Mathematics: Basic Mathematics and Algebra Lial, Hornsby, McGinnis, Salzman, Hestwood, Pearson, 2008 MyMathLab access code (included with textbook.) Calculator: Texas Instrument Graphing Calculator (TI-83) Notebook and writing implements COURSE OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate mastery of the following topics (USING A CALCULATOR): Equations, Inequalities, and Applications: Solving linear equations Graphs of Linear Equations and Inequalities in Two Variables: Reading and drawing graphs; finding the slope of a line; writing the equation of a line; graphing inequalities in two variables. Factoring: Factoring trinomials and solving quadratic equations by factoring; solving applications of quadratic equations. 1

Please visit for more information. ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance to class is mandatory for all sessions, as per BC policy. You are only allowed to accumulate three (3) absences before being withdrawn from the course. Arriving to class late or leaving class early is not acceptable, and students will accumulate ½ an absence when they are not in class for the full period. Note: It is school regulation that students wait at least 20 minutes for the teacher to arrive. Working on MyMathLab assignments is mandatory. A student who doesn t log in on a weekly basis will accumulate ½ absences for each week that he/she fails to log in. (For this course use xxxx) Instructions to register if you do not have an access code from another semester: Go to Click the Register button and choose the student option. Once again, click the Register button under student. Click on get access to a new course. Carefully type the information that is asked such as your username, password, address, etc. Instructions to register if you already have an access code from a prior semester: Go to and click the Log In button. Enter your login name and password and click Log In. Click the Enroll in Another Course button. Enter the new Course ID from your instructor and follow the on-screen instructions to complete enrollment. Instructions to use MyMathLab once you are registered: Go to Go to Login Choose the student s option Once again, Login under Returning Users You will be directed to your MyPearson page. Click on the course link (found under MyCourseCompass Courses heading on the left side of page). The Drill Exercises will be found under Homework. Use the tutorial help links that are found at the right hand side of each problem. Note: If you use the Ask My Instructor feature, you must type in your course instructor s address which is found on this syllabus. Use the other features that are available on MyMathLab such as the study plan, practice tests & quizzes, and tools for success. 4

5 ADDENDUM: STUDENT PROFESSIONAL CODE OF CONDUCT The guidelines below will ensure the right academic atmosphere conducive to learning. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a mature, professional manner. We expect students to demonstrate respect for all others in the room, including instructors, other students and visitors. Lack of respect towards the teacher and/or students will not be permitted. The disruptive student will be reprimanded according to the severity and frequency of his/her actions. Violations of the Code will be addressed in accordance with College Policies listed in the catalog. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students are expected to maintain high standards of academic integrity. Cheating on a test, quiz, or homework assignment is not accepted. Students who are found to have cheated will receive a 0 for the test, quiz, or homework. Furthermore, a report of the incident will be forwarded to the Dean of Faculty. A second incident may result in failure in the course and will be brought before the Judiciary Board. COLLEGE-WIDE CELL PHONE POLICY Cell phones must be put away (in a purse, book bag) or clipped onto clothing. All cellular phones must be placed on Off mode when attending class and during on-campus work hours. If an incoming call interrupts the class, the student will be asked to immediately turn his/her cellular phone to the Off mode. Except in the case of an extreme emergency (notify the instructor if this will be the case) students should not disturb the class by leaving the room (see disruption or obstruction of college activities in Bloomfield College catalog) to receive an incoming call or to make a phone call. Under no circumstance should students make a phone call or send a text message during class lectures/discussions or major campus ceremonies and events. The College is aware that cell phones are used for emergency notification. Therefore, each faculty member during the first week of class will select at least three students who are registered for the E2Campus emergency text messaging service. These selected students will have their cell phones turned on vibrate mode to receive possible emergency alerts. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE It is inappropriate to attend to personal business such as checking or entering a social network site when assigned class work at a computer lab; have Ipod plugs in your ears; leave the class while the instructor is giving a lecture to take care of personal business; show inappropriate displays such as yawning, continuous sighing, etc.; lay you head on the desk or fall asleep; eat during class; leave the class during lecture to get something to drink or eat; talk during the lecture; do assignments not related to the course; groom yourself during class; use slang and/or obscene and abusive language. PARTICIPATION Students are expected to bring all materials to every class textbooks, notebooks, writing implements, calculators, rulers (if necessary) and other items as requested by the instructor; attend class having completed homework assignments; be active learners by taking notes, asking questions and doing the class work assigned by the instructor. 5
