The diploma combines practical information with current business and management knowledge which is then placed in the context of a hospitality environment. Hospitality reaches across several sectors. These may include: hotels, cafes, restaurants, resorts pubs, clubs, and other types of venues. Offering a work placement, this course will teach you to establish business relationships and to use industry-specific information to build a successful career. You ll learn how to effectively manage quality customer service, monitor budgets and how to produce professional business documents. There is also a choice of electives in food and beverage, front of house and hospitality small business management, meaning that you can specifically choose the areas of focus for your course, giving you best access to the most relevant information you need. By studying a Diploma of Hospitality, you ll demonstrate to potential employers that you have the skills, knowledge and ambition to work in a role where you manage a business, have extra responsibilities or manage others. This course would suit you whether you are a new entrant to the job sector or a career changer who is looking to diversify your skill portfolio and resume. 4 SIT50313 Diploma of Hospitality What you need to know about this course COURSE NUMBER E1023 How is the course delivered? This is an online course with a work placement. This means that you will complete your knowledge and basic skills development through online learning. You will also undertake a work placement. This will allow you to practice and master practical skills and gain invaluable workplace experience and contacts. Students must complete Unit of Competency assessments as well as Workplace assessments to be deemed competent for Workplace Units. Work placement is mandatory and must be completed progessively through the course. Grades for these Units may only be issued upon completion of the course. What is online learning? OpenSpace is Open Colleges online campus. Through OpenSpace you will: > access your learning materials and assessments > undertake and upload assessments > engage and interact with your trainer > participate in student forums and find a study buddy > access your assessment grades and feedback > access student support services. What learning materials are included with this course? The following resources are provided to you via OpenSpace: > learner workbooks > video resources and additional readings > weblinks to relevant articles and activities > course forums. guidance of a workplace superviser and Open Colleges Workplace Assessor. To be assessed in the workplace you will complete a logbook of workplace tasks, complete a workplace portfolio and undergo interviews with your Workplace Assessor. A work placement can be a highly stimulating and rewarding part of the course. It will enable you to participate in a real workplace and put into practice the new skills and knowledge that you are learning in the course. The work placement also provides Open Colleges with an opportunity to assess the skills and knowledge you have developed through the course in the workplace. This is called workplace assessment. Open Colleges provides you with a detailed Workplace Assessment Guide. This details the specific requirements of the workplace and workplace supervisor to meet the needs of the course. You are required to identify a suitable organization for your work placement. However, Open Colleges can provide advice and direction through our Work Placement Support Team. Please note that you may need to undertake the work placement at more than one workplace in order to meet the requirements of the course, depending on the nature and scope of activities conducted at the workplace. More information can be found in the Workplace Assessment Guide. What is work placement? Work placement is a structured learning program undertaken in a workplace. It involves undertaking set tasks and activities over time under the

5 SIT50313 Diploma of Hospitality Specific workplace requirements > Duration: Up to 144 hours. The number of work placement hours might vary depending on the elective units chosen. > Workplace: Commercial hospitality operation, such as a café, restaurant or hotel, where you can be involved in the operations, implementation and evaluation of hospitality management. The workplace supervisor will need to be currently employed within the hospitality industry with a Diploma of Hospitality qualification (or higher), and at least three years of experience in this position. See the Workplace Assessment Guide for more information. > Recommendation: Open Colleges recommends that you consider the work placement options in your local area prior to enrolling in this course. > Requirements: The workplace will need to provide you with access to commercial hospitality equipment and resources. These will vary depending on the elective stream chosen, but should include kitchen and bar equipment, hospitality software programs and workplace policies and procedure. > Insurance: Open Colleges provides insurance cover for the mandatory work placement you undertake as part of your course. This insurance coverage includes Public and Products Liability Insurance as well as Student Personal Accident Insurance. > Questions? Contact our Enrolment Consultants to discuss any questions you might have regarding the work placement requirements of the course. How is the course assessed? During the course, you will undertake the following assessments: > Multiple Choice questions > Short answer questions > Project > Written report > Case studies > Workplace assessment - Portfolio - Interview questions - Logbook. What about Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)? We understand that you may already have many skills and areas of expertise that you have obtained in different ways and these are recognised through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Open Colleges has developed an RPL Application Kit for this course. The Student Handbook, available on the Open Colleges website, provides more information about our RPL process. Alternatively, you can contact an Enrolment Consultant to discuss your RPL options. What is the duration of the course? The maximum duration for the course is 24 months. You could complete this course in as little as 12 months if you studied around 14 hours per week. This is a guide only the time taken to complete your course will depend on your level of skill and knowledge. Do I need to get my Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA)? If you select the elective stream Food and Beverage Management in Licensed Premises you will need to provide a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate from an approved provider at your own cost to demonstrate competency for SITHFAB201 Provide responsible service of alcohol. This Certificate will need to be completed before beginning this study period, as this is a prerequisite for the subsequent units.

6 SIT50313 Diploma of Hospitality What are the entry requirements for the course? Education Requirements There are no formal education requirements for this course, however you ll need access to a hospitality workplace to complete the practical components of the assessments. Given the nature and delivery model of this course, we require you to have completed: > Year 12 or equivalent OR > A nationally recognised qualification at the Certificate III level or higher OR > At least two years of relevant work experience. Minimum Age Requirements You will need to be at least 18 years old. English Language Requirements This course requires you to read comprehensive learner workbooks, undertake a range of written assessments and engage in online discussion forums. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written communication. > Microsoft Office 2013 or equivalent > Broadband internet connection > 2GB of RAM > CD-ROM or DVD drive > Adobe Reader XI or equivalent > File compression software > Access to a printer and scanner. Specific requirements for Mac OS users: > Mac OS X v 10.5 or higher (Mac OS X v 10.6 or higher is recommended) > 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster Intel processor (2GHz or faster recommended). > Adobe Flash Player 11 or higher Specific requirements for Windows users: > Microsoft Windows 8 or higher is recommended (Windows 7 or higher is recommended) > 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor (2GHz or faster recommended). > Adobe Flash Player 11 or higher You ll also need access to Adobe Flash player, as well as access to Skype and enough internet bandwidth to view online videos, like those available on YouTube. As such, entry to the course requires one of the following: > English proficiency to Year 12 level OR > a nationally recognised qualification at the Certificate III level OR > 2 years of work experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication) OR > Satisfactory completion of the Open College Language, Literacy and Numeracy diagnostic tool for Diploma courses OR > Completion of an approved English language test (see website for details). Computing Requirements You will need access to a computer and the internet and you must have intermediate computing skills. Minimum specifications for your computer are: Audio-visual requirements You will need access to a digital video recording device and/or a digital camera and associated software to save and upload video and image files to OpenSpace. Many mobile phones and smartphones include this technology. Students will need access to software to view online videos and images. Software such as Adobe Reader, Windows Media Player, Windows Photo Viewer etc are available as a download from the internet. Workplace requirements To complete the assessments in this course, you need to have access to a workplace or commercial hospitality premises where you can be involved in various stages of hospitality management, operations, implementation and evaluation.

7 SIT50313 Diploma of Hospitality What support services are available? During your studies with Open Colleges, you will have access to a comprehensive range of support services. These include: Academic support Your experienced trainers are available in OpenSpace to answer any questions you may have regarding the learning materials or assessments. Your course coordinator can also provide you with advice and support regarding the overall course. Student support The student support team is your one-stop service centre for all student administrative issues including enrolment, change of contact details, OpenSpace support, assessment results and certification. You can access the student support team in OpenSpace or by or phone. Learning support The learning support team is a dedicated team of specialists that provide you with a comprehensive induction to studying with Open Colleges as well as specific support if you encounter learning difficulties during your studies. Learning support resources, such as writing guides, are available in OpenSpace. You can access the learning support team via your trainer or the student support team. More information? We recommend that you read the Student Handbook prior to enrolling with us. What qualification will I receive? Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a nationally recognised SIT50313 Diploma of Hospitality from North Coast TAFE (provider number 90010). SIT50313 Diploma of Hospitality has been superseded by SIT50416 Diploma of Hospitality Management on the 2 March Open Colleges will transition to the new qualification in the near future. What funding support options exist? Austudy/Abstudy This course is Austudy/Abstudy approved, but you will need to apply directly to Centrelink for information on eligibility. Work Placement Support The work placement support team can provide you with support, advice and resources if you encounter difficulties in securing a workplace for your work placement. You can access the learning support team via your trainer and assessor or the student support team. Peer support As a student of Open Colleges you can also access our study buddy system. This enables you to connect with other Open Colleges students studying your course that live near you. Students find this is a great way to keep motivated and build lasting friendships and networks.
