Goreswar, Dist. Baksa (BTAD), Assam 1.2 Year of Establishment: 29 th August Current Academic Activities at the Institution(Numbers): Faculties/Schools: Arts and Commerce faculties Departments/Centres: 10 Departments Programmes/Courses offered: B.A. and B.Com Permanent Faculty Members: 20 Permanent Support Staff: 9 Students: Three major features in the institutional The college is situated in rural area. 2 Section II: CRITERION WISE ANALYSIS Observations(Strengths and/or Weaknesses) on Key-Aspects (Please limit to three major ones for each and use telegraphic language(it is not necessary to indicate all the three bullets each time; write only the relevant ones) 2.1 Curricular Aspects: Curricular Planning and Implementation: Curriculum is prescribed by the Gauhati University. A few teachers as members of the Board of Studies of the University contribute to the development of curriculum. The Academic Committee of the college takes stock of the proper implementation of curriculum Academic Flexibility: Academic calendar in conformity with one supplied by affiliating university. The College follows Semester system and CBCS. Offers four skill development programs. Self finance program of B.Com Curriculum Enrichment: Organizes different supplementary programs for enrichment of university curriculum. College organizes Seminars, Workshops & Guest Lectures Use of ICT is in infancy Feedback System: Formal feedback taken from students and stakeholders on academic matters. Students feedback about teachers need be obtained, analysed and follow up action taken periodically. More need based skill development programmes be introduced. 2.2 Teaching-Learning & Evaluation: Student Enrolment and Profile: College website & campus notification provide details about admission to various courses and regularly updated. Admission process is transparent. Reservation policy is followed Catering to Student Diversity: Special care for students belonging to economically weaker sections. Arrangements of financial support to SC/ST students. Remedial classes/tutorial classes needs to be strengthened Teaching-Learning Process: Academic calendar prepared annually College conducts seminars, workshops & training programmes for promoting pedagogical skills for teachers. More teaching positions be sanctioned on regular basis Teacher Quality: Nine doctorates and 8 M. Phils. Teachers are committed to their job and motivate students. Number of permanent teachers is less than part timers. 2
3 2.2.5 Evaluation Process and Reforms: College follows rules and regulations of the affiliating university regarding evaluation. Internal assessment is in vogue. The academic cell of the college collects and analyses data on students learning outcomes Student Performance and Learning Outcomes: Students performance is monitored by the teachers by holding timely discussions. Counselling offered to the students. Stress on providing quality education to students. 2.3 Research, Consultancy & Extension: Promotion of Research: Four teachers completed minor research projects. College encourages faculty to apply for minor research projects to enhance research culture. No recognised research centre Resource Mobilization for Research: Research grants have been mobilised to a very limited extent. No budget provision for research. Efforts to be made for mobilising more funds from UGC and other funding agencies Research Facilities: Moderate research facilities are available. Library needs more Books & Journals as well as Reference Books No collaborative research facilities developed Research Publications and Awards: Some teachers have published articles and books. Two volumes of multidisciplinary research Journal (IMPRESSION) published. College needs to focus on research output by the faculty Consultancy: No consultancy, No collaboration. Consultancy and collaboration need to be developed Extension Activities and Institutional NSS and student union in place and organise events. Social Responsibility: Extension education cell, women study cell and student welfare cell organise community development programmes. College has adopted one village for its overall development Collaboration Few scholars from outside invited. College yet to establish collaboration with research laboratories and industry. 2.4 Infrastructure and Learning Resources: Physical Facilities: Optimum utilisation of limited physical space. Girls hostel construction completed and be opened immediately. More class rooms are needed Library as a Learning Resources: Library has a good collection of books and it added 7373 books during the last five years. INFLIBNET needs to be introduced. Reading room facilities need augmentation. 3
4 2.4.3 IT Infrastructure Budget provision for computer maintenance. Minicomputer labs with 15 computers but needs up gradation. Limited internet facility available Maintenance of Campus Facilities: Two generators. Provision for constant water supply. Sanitation, particularly girls toilets need to be upgraded. 2.5 Student Support and Progression: Student Mentoring and Support: More than 70% of the students receive financial assistance from State Govt. Students grievance redressal cell in place. Remedial classes need to be arranged at regular intervals Student Progression: A few students go to PG classes while others try for jobs. College has career counselling cell. Dropout rate needs to be reduced Student Participation and Activities: College has facilities for sports like football, basketball, volleyball, indoor games and Gym. Student council-goreswar College Student s union in place. Registered Alumni Association. College needs full time sports instructor. 2.6 Governance, Leadership and Management: Institutional Vision and Leadership: The vision of the college is to create human resources of high calibre leading to national development. Elevating college to PG level institute. Cohesive Governing Body members nominated by state government and affiliating university Strategy Development and Deployment: All the academic decisions are taken with the support of the committees/cells. Implementation of suggestions from various stakeholders. IQAC in place but has to be more proactive Faculty Empowerment Strategies: Faculty members are provided special academic leave to attend training programmes/seminars. Teachers be encouraged for upgradation of educational qualifications. The performance appraisal system needs to be improved Financial Management and Resource State Govt./UGC Funding. Mobilization: Salary & allowances paid to staff as per government/ugc norms. Accounts audited regularly. 4
5 2.6.5 Internal Quality Assurance System: IQAC is constituted and functioning and enjoys full cooperation of various stakeholders. Many decisions of the IQAC are approved by the Governing body and implemented. Functional committees and cells need to be activated further. 2.7 Innovations and Best Practices: Environment Consciousness: A garden of different kinds of flora and fauna including herbal plants developed. Practical measures need to be initiated to make the college more environment friendly. Efforts be made to make the campus green and clean Innovations: Biometric punching machine for attendance. Maintenance of teacher class diary. Linkages with local NGO s for community development Best Practices: Teachers self appraisal reports. Student seminar, field studies. Efforts to promote carbon neutrality. Covered Car parking for staff. Section III: OVERALL ANALYSIS Observations (Please limit to five major ones for each and use telegraphic languages) (It is not necessary to denote all the five bullets for each) 3.1 Institutional Strengths: The practices are in tune with Mission and Vision. Semester system with CBCS. Committed and dedicated teachers. Strongly motivated and disciplined students- many are first generation learners. 3.2 Institutional Weakness: Inadequate faculty strength. Dependence on government grant. Inadequate research infrastructure. Insufficient placement activity. Lack of hostel facilities. Lack of College transport facility. 3.3 Institutional Opportunities: Introduction of science stream and PG programmes. Keeping pace with modern day development in teaching and research. Mobilization of financial resources for college development from UGC and other funding agencies. Establishing collaborations with other reputed institutions of higher learning. Establishment of effective Career guidance and Placement Cell 5
6 3.4 Institutional Challenges: To arrest the dropout rate of students. Nurturing prospective rank holders in the university examinations and budding sports persons. The college can focus on network building. Mentoring and motivating the students for higher studies. Section IV: Recommendations for Quality Enhancement of the Institution (Please limit to ten major ones and use telegraphic languages) (It is not necessary to indicate all the ten bullets) Introduction of science stream and PG programmes. Augmentation of infrastructure facilities like hostels, well equipped auditorium and computer lab. Appointment of adequate number of permanent teachers. Facilitating more teachers to participate in national and international seminars and conferences as well as organising more conferences in the college. Wi-Fi facility may be provided with support from national agencies CCTV cameras to be set up at strategic points, especially the gates Titles in library are to be enhanced. More peer reviewed Indian and Foreign Journals be subscribed. Books and journals, as well as e-resources, in the library be strengthened with extended working hours. IQAC needs to be strengthened further for proactive functioning. Sports talent be nurtured to create champions. Perspective plan be prepared for short and long term. Coaching classes to the students to prepare them for competitive examinations. I agree with the Observations of the Peer Team as mentioned in this report.
