Responsibility also extends to public preschool programs, the state School for the Deaf, regional programs for children with disabilities, and education programs in Oregon youth correctional facilities. There is currently one academic-year, Intermittent Dormitory Counselor 1 Substitute position available with the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD) in Salem, Oregon. This academic-year position works September through June, and generally works a swing-shift. This position is classified and represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The Oregon School for the Deaf is a community that fosters lifelong learning, encouraging individuals to become self-fulfilled, productive citizens. OSD currently has approximately 100 deaf and hard of hearing students, many of whom live on campus during the week, and shares a campus with two charter schools in Salem, Oregon.
2 Page 2 of 7 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary purpose of this position is to: The purpose of this position is to provide the residential students with: a safe, nurturing, and attractive environment; education to students focusing, specifically related to, Deaf culture and values; living skills instruction, while promoting responsible independence; appropriate role models; social and recreational opportunities; tools and means to optimize appropriate student behavior; support and assistance in achieving academic goals; and knowledge of resources, both within and outside of OSD. Through these actions, the development of a graduate capable of successful independent and productive living is accomplished. Complete general custodial tasks in order to keep the unit clean, orderly and safe. Duties include: Perform random bed checks in order to verify the presence and proper location of all students in Peterson Hall or Lindstrom during the overnight hours. These checks must be completed and documented at various intervals of time but may never exceed 30 minutes between any two. Follow established program guidelines whenever a student is not in the assigned location or is engaged in some form of misbehavior. Provide consistent carryover of the students programs and protocols as developed by the Individualized Education Program team in the areas of Behavior, Personal Care, Independent Living. Accomplishes specific tasks, duties, and responsibilities assigned by the Dorm Supervisor or Dean of Students. Provides guidance and assistance for student on their preparation for school; personal hygiene, room care, appropriate clothing and other living skills, and assure they are satisfactorily completed. Provides supervision at breakfast. Monitors student behavior and respond to misbehavior with established procedures. Complete cleaning of areas assigned by supervisor when not involved in bed check rounds or student special needs. Most items required are basic household maintenance tasks to keep the environment clean, orderly and safe. Works with and helps train student employees or practicum students. Prepare dirty laundry for pick up by cleaning service. Return clean laundry to appropriate storage area. Complete any related inventory papers. Do laundry because of special need or supervisor s request. Assess for safety hazards and repair needs, then report them to your supervisor. Complete any reports assigned or resulting from special occurrences. Attend to the needs of any student experiencing special needs like nightmares, illness, homesick, sleepwalking. Wake up students who are on an established schedule for toilet use at night. WORKING CONDITIONS Exposure to adverse weather conditions at times. Must occasionally deal with aggressive student or upset parent. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. Occasional need to initiate behavior management techniques at various stages of student escalation. This position has a flexible work schedule. Ability to perform light housekeeping tasks and lift/move furnishings, laundry and cleaning equipment of up to 50 pounds. May be required to obtain a red cross card and pass OSD driving license to provide student transportation in state vehicles. Applicants will be subject to a fingerprint-based background investigation including driving record. The successful candidate will need to be fingerprinted before beginning work and will be

QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED & REQUESTED SKILLS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED; AND six (6) months of experience working with children or adults in a group home, foster care setting, or skilled care center. NOTE: Some positions are restricted to same sex as the student. Some positions may require the ability to obtain certification in basic first aid and pass the examination to drive the school's class 10 pupil transportation vehicle. At the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD), staff having significant contact with students must possess effective American Sign Language (ASL) skills. All staff at OSD must possess some level of ASL skill in order to make OSD a communication-accessible environment. Staff are expected to sign at all times when deaf students or staff are present or in the vicinity, regardless of whether they are directly involved in the conversation. This includes the campus grounds as well as inside buildings. The expected American Sign Language (ASL) level for a Dormitory Counselor 1 is 3. The minimum at hire is 2 with the requirement that you reach the expected level within 1 year of hire. Definitions of ASL Levels: Level 1 - Able to engage in routine conversation, emergency transactions and minimum courtesy requirements. Level 2 - Able to satisfy routine social demands, travel needs and everyday conversational work requirements. Level 3 - Able to sign ASL with sufficient structural accuracy and vocabulary to participate effectively in most formal and informal conversations on practical, social and professional topics; able to conduct work in ASL. DESIRED ATTRIBUTES Experience communicating on a one-to-one basis or in groups to provide or exchange information Experience composing written communications Experience completing housekeeping tasks Preference may be given to those who are at the expected ASL level.
