Course Contact: (faculty or school): (03) Bachelor of Tourism (Honours) - G4E ( BTourism(Hons) ) The Bachelor of Tourism is an on-campus course offered by the Faculty of Business through the School of on the Hobart and Launceston campuses. The course may be studied over a minimum of one year full-time or up to a maximum of two years part-time. Applicants for the BTourism(Hons) must have qualified for admission to an appropriate undergraduate degree, including a major in Tourism with a minimum GPA of 6.5. Objectives The BTourism(Hons) aims to: train graduates in advanced tourism theory and practice; promote disciplinary depth and theoretical knowledge in tourism studies; and provide opportunities for vocationally-related experience. Graduates of the BTourism(Hons) degree will be strong applicants for jobs in a wide range of fields, for example: tourism and the travel industries; heritage tourism, museums and historic sites; wilderness, antarctic and nature tourism; tourism research; tourism marketing; tourism administration; tourism journalism and the media; other service industries and sectors. Students enrol in either BMA411 and BMA412 (full-time 50%) or BMA413 and BMA414 (part-time 25%) and complete two 25% coursework units plus a thesis (50%). Course Contact: (faculty or school): Graduate Certificate in Business - C5D ( GradCertBus ) The Faculty of Commerce may accept as a candidate for the Graduate Certificate in Business any of the following: i) A person who has completed an undergraduate degree of an Australian higher education institution or the equivalent standard in any other institution, or ii) A person who has five (5) years' relevant work experience. For entry into all courses, international students must provide: * Evidence of proficiency in the English language. An overall score of 6 in the IELTS test (with no band less than 6) or a TOEFL score of 575 or more with a written English score of at least 5 is the normal method of demonstrating English language proficiency. Students who have satisfactorily completed the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Business may proceed to the Master of Business, to the Master of Business (Specialisation), or to the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (an existing program that articulates with the existing MBA). Students who have satisfactorily completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Business may also be eligible for credit standing in other postgraduate programs offered by the Faculty. Professional Recognition There is no single, relevant, professional body, although it is anticipated that this course will assist students in gaining membership in bodies University of Tasmania, Course Guide

2 such as the Australian Human Resources Institute and the Australian Marketing Institute, depending upon the sequence of units chosen. The GradCertBus will consist of four postgraduate units from amongst those offered by the the Faculty of Commerce, as approved by the Course Coordinator from the current Faculty list of postgraduate units. It will comprise of a sequence of units in a particular area of business, for example, financial reporting and analysis, marketing management, law for managers, or human resource management. Appropriate postgraduate units available from other Faculties may also be included, for example a postgraduate psychology unit within a human resource management sequence. Course Contact: (faculty or school): Graduate Certificate in General Studies - C5C ( GradCertGenSt ) The Graduate Certificate in General Studies is designed for students who have previously graduated with an undergraduate degree or equivalent, and wish to pursue further academic studies. This course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to assist them in the development of their career, professional or personal educational interests by providing them with the opportunity to study at postgraduate level. The specific knowledge and skills developed will depend upon the approved sequence of units undertaken. The faculties may accept as a candidate for the Graduate Certificate any of the following: i) A person who has completed an undergraduate degree of an Australian higher education institution or the equivalent standard in any other institution, or ii) A person who has five (5) years' relevant work or community experience. For entry into all postgraduatecourses, international students must provide: Evidence of proficiency in the English language. An overall score of 6+ in the IELTS test, with no band less than 6, or a TOEFL score of 575 or more with a written English score of 5+ is the normal method of demonstrating English language proficiency. Articulation To Course Students who have satisfactorily completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate may proceed to other courses for which they have the necessary qualifications and prerequisites including, for example, the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. The GradCertGenSt will consist of four units of 12.5% weighting as approved by the Course Coordinator from the current list of units offered by the University, and described in the University Handbook. Normally, these will be chosen from amongst available postgraduate units, but up to two undergraduate units may be permitted, provided that they are not in the same area as the candidate's undergraduate degree. A maximum of one first year undergraduate unit will be permitted. Graduate Certificate in Information Systems - C5S ( GradCertIS ) Campus(es) Offered: Hobart: Launceston: Course Duration: Minimum 1yr, Maximum 2 yrs. Course Contact: (faculty or school): (03) or (Offered subject to Council approval) This on-campus one semester full-time or four semesters part-time course is offered by the Faculty of Commerce at the Hobart and Launceston campuses. Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Information Systems program will be required to (a) have a 3 year degree from an accredited university institution; or (b) have demonstrated IT competencies and relevant professional experience of seven years' standing that indicate a level of knowledge and skill comparable to those of graduates in similar circumstances. 3 In addition, a candidate must have a basic knowledge of information systems and information modelling. This knowledge may be gained from self-study and professional experience, or by attending both of the units BSA101 Business Information Systems and BSA102 Information Modelling & Infrastructures. Subject to demand, The School of Information Systems offers a three week long summer school during January--February each year to allow students to gain the prerequisite knowledge contained in BSA102 Information Modelling & Infrastructures. Objectives The course aims to provide short professional development studies that may be tailored to the needs of individual professional associations, corporate bodies or government agencies. This course is designed to enhance skills within an existing career path and to broaden knowledge in the areas of electronic commerce, database design and management, IS/IT project management, information management and decision support systems. Articulation To Course Graduate Diploma of Information Systems Professional Recognition Graduates of this certificate alone will not be eligible for professional membership of the Australian Computer Society but may use this certificate in conjunction with other qualifications to seek membership of the Society, The Graduate Certificate is madeup of four units. Course Contact: (faculty or school): Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting - C5B ( GCPA ) This is a 6 month full-time or 1 year part-time course of study offered by the Faculty of Business, School of Accounting and Corporate Governance. The course involves the completion of 4 units of study. The course is the first part of a suite of courses that culminate in eligibility for professional accounting body membership. Completion of this course alone does not lead to professional accounting body membership (see Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) and Master of Professional Accounting - Specialisation (MPAS)). This is a fee paying course. All units are subject to formal assessment including the completion of continuous assessment such as assignments, and a final examination. Candidates for the Graduate Certificate shall be qualified for entry if they have: 1. The equivalent of an undergraduate or masters degree in a non-accounting degree. International applications are subject to assessment for equivalency OR 2. Approved relevant work experience or other special circumstances (eg post secondary qualifications) as approved by the Dean or delegated authority. International students will normally be expected to have reached an IELTS test score of 6+ with no band below 6 or a TOEFL test score of 550+ with a written English score of 5+. At the discretion of the Faculty admission may also include an interview. The units in this course form part of the MPA and/or MPAS and once the MPA or MPAS is completed and depending on the qualifications of the applicant on entry, it is the first part of a pathway for students to qualify for membership of the professional accounting bodies and then to pursue professional year studies with these bodies. Course Contact: (faculty or school): Graduate Certificate of - C5T ( GradCertMgt ) Part-time: A 1-year part-time, on-campus course is offered at the Hobart and Launceston campuses. Students will now have the option of completing the course in less than three years by taking summer school units. The course is conducted over 7 weekend sessions per semester. For each unit seven 3.25-hour (Saturday) sessions are held alternatively between Hobart and Launceston (ie 4/7 at Hobart and 3/7 at Launceston). Full-time; A one semester, or equivalent course is offered at the Hobart campus only and is conducted with a combination of traditional timetabling, weekend mode and intensive mode and/or flexible delivery as appropriate. Both full-time and part-time units consist of 39 hours made up of 22 hours class contact and the balance made up of structured learning through a range of flexible education initiatives. The course is full fee paying. Fees cover tuition, all study materials (with the exception of text books) and costs associated with the study sessions. All units are subject to formal assessment including assignments and examinations. The Faculty of Commerce may accept as a candidate for the Graduate Certificate of any of the following: i. ii. A person who: (a) has completed an undergraduate degree of an Australian higher education institution or the equivalent standard in any other institution, and (b) has had at least six months work experience; A person who is not a graduate but whose demonstrated managerial competencies and relevant experience of seven years' standing indicating a level of knowledge and skill equivalent to those of graduates in similar situations. Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Information could expect to find employment as librarians, teacher librarians and information managers. Completion of the course allows graduates to seek membership of ALIA. Professional Recognition Recognised by ALIA Course units in the Graduate Diploma in Information are of 12.5% weighting. The course has three distinct streams depending on the professional outcome sought by the candidate. Each stream consists of 6-7 core units and 1-2 elective units. Four units are common to all three streams: BSA623 Business Information Systems and BSA633 Strategic Planning & for IS, IST4104 Information Resources and Services and IST4106 Information Organisation. The latter two units are available via distance education from Edith Cowan University. For students enrolled in the Teacher Librarian or General Librarian stream, library exemplars will be included in the assessment process and in projects to satisfy ALIA's requirements. Professional placement is managed within IST4104 Information and Resources. Edith Cowan University will be responsible for the process of practicum placement, supervision and assessment through this unit. Objectives The course aims to -- * enable graduates to fulfil key roles in the it and related industries, and to liaise between IT personnel and other professional and industrial personnel * provide graduates with a strong systems focus, in their ability to conceive of new designs, address business needs and solve problems; * give graduates a good understanding of the roles of IT in society, in organisations and for individuals, and an awareness that IT is a powerful factor for change in modern society * provide knowledge, skills and understanding of - the relationships of information and information technology to organisational needs; - current management practice in the development of information systems, their use and associated policy formulation and analysis; - the value of research, critical thinking and effective communication in the management of information systems; and to * develop professional skills in such areas as interpersonal communication, working in teams, and technical report writing. Associate membership of the Australian Computer Society. Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems could expect to find employment as a business analyst, database analyst, systems analyst, IT project manager, IT manager, information manager, database administrator, IT administrator or manager, telecommunications manager, IT consultant, electronic commerce or electronic business consultant, web developer, webmaster. Articulation To Course Master of Information Systems Course units in the Graduate Diploma in Information Systems are of 12.5% weighting. There are 6 specified core units and two elective units in Information Systems as outlined in the Schedule. 13 There is no single, relevant, professional body, as the units in this degree will be specifically chosen to meet the educational needs of individual students. However, depending upon the choice of units, students may gain membership of bodies such as the Australian Human Resources Institute and the Australian Marketing Institute. Course Contact: (faculty or school): Master of Business Administration - C7H ( MBA ) Part-time: A 3-year part-time, on-campus course is offered at the Hobart and Launceston campuses. Students will now have the option of completing the course in less than three years by taking summer school units. The course is conducted over 7 weekend sessions per semester. For each unit seven 3.25-hour (Saturday) sessions are held alternatively between Hobart and Launceston (ie 4/7 at Hobart and 3/7 at Launceston). A 3 semester equivalent (minimum 1 year) course is offered at the Hobart campus only and is conducted with a combination of traditional timetabling, weekend mode and intensive mode and/or flexible delivery as appropriate. Both full-time and part-time units consist of 39 hours made up of 22 hours class contact and the balance made up of structured learning through a range of flexible education initiatives. The course is full fee paying. Fees cover tuition, all study materials (with the exception of text books) and costs associated with the study sessions. All units are subject to formal assessment normally including assignments and a final examination. 16 The aim of the course is to provide a master degree for candidates who wish to undertake initial training at postgraduate level in research in accounting or accounting combined with another subject area. The course requirement consists of six units of coursework including a compulsory unit Research Methods followed by the dissertation. The course requirements can be completed in a minimum of three semesters of full-time (or part-time equivalent) study. The course is offered in Hobart through the School of Accounting and Corporate Governance. The Faculty of Business may accept as a candidate for the Master of Commerce [by coursework] any of the following: * a person who has completed the degree of Bachelor of Commerce with Honours at the University of Tasmania or a qualification of equivalent standard in another tertiary institution; * a person who has completed the degree of Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Economics at the University of Tasmania (or a qualification of equivalent standard in another tertiary institution), provided that the applicant's standard of achievement in that degree course is acceptable to the Faculty [a]; * a person who has completed four units of the Bachelor of Commerce with Honours at the University of Tasmania provided that the applicant has achieved a grade of second class upper division in each unit; * a person who possesses such other qualification and experience deemed by the Faculty to provide a preparation for study equivalent to that provided for by the prescriptions given in the first two categories above. * Candidates in this category shall be required to have achieved a standard of Distinction or higher in at least 50% of the final year degree units or in equivalent postgraduate coursework/experience. The degree will be of interest to those students requiring a specialised electronic business degree rather than the more general (and research oriented) Master of Information Systems. Candidates for the Master of Electronic Business will be required to satisfy one of the following: * A minimum of a three-year degree, or combination of degrees and diplomas, from an accredited university, which includes major or sub-major studies in a relevant discipline, or * A three-year degree from an accredited university, and at least three years of relevant professional experience for those without a major or sub-major in a relevant discipline.
