1 Shared-Time Programs at Union County Vocational-Technical High School Lisa Tauscher Jeffrey Lerner Jennifer Calvelli Principal Principal Teaching Supervisor MISSION STATEMENT: The Union County Vocational-Technical High School is dedicated to advancing the learning and well-being of all students. A quality learning experience is provided that fosters democratic value, risk taking, and a love of learning. We are committed to developing student career decision making and confidence; character, a sensitivity to the environment, and diversity are taught and modeled by all. Our faculty guides students to understand the competing demands and responsibilities that are part of the world of work and to embrace a practice of life-long learning. The school s intent is to provide students with educational opportunities to acquire marketable skills necessary to enter into and compete in a constantly changing, technologically advance labor market. ADVISORY BOARD: UCTECH is committed to providing for the occupational training needs of county residents. We seek to meet the needs of students as well as those of business and industry. In order to facilitate a successful transition from school to career, collaborative partnerships are developed and maintained with community, businesses, and industry and post-secondary institutions. STUDENT SELECTION: Students must apply in the spring of the year prior to attendance. Applicants are selected from a diverse population of students in each of the twenty-one school districts of Union County. Out-of-county applicants are considered after all county resident applications have been reviewed. ENROLLMENT: As of September 2015, the Shared-Time Programs at UCTECH have a total enrollment of 566 students in 26 programs, including 13 self-contained classroom programs. STRUCTURED LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Students in their senior year can participate in a job shadowing, internship, or work experience related to their program. Participation requires instructor approval. Criteria for participation includes: good attendance, minimum grade of an 80 and a flawless discipline record. All structured learning experiences are supervised by a certified SLE coordinator. SPECIAL SERVICES: UCVTS is dedicated to providing high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables all students to meet, and exceed, the State s student achievement standards. Appropriate services are provided to students in the district who may have special needs and/or disabilities. SCHOOL DAY SCHEDULE: Shared-Time Programs at UCTECH run in both an AM and a PM schedule. The AM session runs from 8:00am to 10:07am; the PM session runs from 12:43pm to 2:50pm. Individual class schedules for Shared-Time students are coordinated with the home school counselor to ensure that each student has all the necessary requirements for high school graduation. TRANSPORTATION: Transportation to and from UCTECH is the responsibility of, and coordinated by, the resident district.
2 ELIGIBILITY SHARED-TIME PROGRAMS ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES Applicants must be enrolled as student in the home high school. Ninth graders may only be considered for a self- contained career cluster or cosmetology program. have an attendance record of less than 15 days absent per year. have an acceptable academic and behavior record in the home school. Preference is given to students that will be able to complete the vocational program, attending two years for most shared-time programs, three years for self-contained cluster programs and Cosmetology. Out of county applicants are considered after all county resident applications have been reviewed. APPLICATION PROCESS Students interested in applying to a Shared-Time Program should submit an online application in the spring prior to the year of attendance and provide their home school counselor with a signed Student Records Release Form. The online application can be found at The home school counselor will complete the high school portion of the Student Records Release Form and submit it with requested documents directly to the UCVTS Shared-Time Admissions Office. Application deadline is April 6, Applicants will be notified of acceptance on or before May 1, FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. What must be included with my application? A. The online application must be completed in full and submitted by the stated deadline. A Student Records Release Form, a copy of your transcript from 9 th grade through the second marking period of your current grade, an attendance record, any NJ standardized test score reports, and a discipline record must also be submitted. The deadline for applications is April 6, Q. How will I know if you have received my supporting materials? A. You will receive an notification when the UCVTS Admissions Office receives and records your documents. Please allow a minimum of 3-4 business days from receipt of all supporting materials for processing. Q. How and when will I be notified of acceptance? A. All applicants who have submitted a completed application with all the required materials by the stated deadline will be notified by mail whether they have been accepted or not. Admissions decisions will be mailed on or before May 1, Q. Are there waiting lists? A. Qualified students who apply by the application deadline will be given priority. Other qualified students may be accepted based upon program vacancies and the individual merits and needs of the applicant. Q. How will I make arrangements for transportation and tuition if I attend UCTECH? A. UCTECH is a public school. If you have been accepted, your resident school district will be notified. Requests for schedule changes are reviewed space permitting. VOCATIONAL CREDIT: UCTECH Shared-Time students receive 10 credits per school year for their vocational program. Grades are delivered form UCTECH to the sending school counselor at the end of each marking period. TECHNICAL ENGLISH: Students in all Shared-Time programs will take Technical English in all years enrolled at UCTECH. This course meets one period a week for a full school year. Students attend the course as part of their vocational program and do not have the ability to opt out of Technical English. Students receive 2.5 credits in Technical English per school year. MATH & FINANCIAL CONCEPTS: In order to assist Shared-Time students to succeed in their UCTECH program and fulfill their high school graduation requirements in math, students in all Shared-Time programs will take Math & Financial Concepts in all years enrolled at UCTECH. This course meets one period a week for the full school year. Students attend the course as part of their vocational program and do not have the ability to opt out of Math & Financial Concepts. Students receive 2.5 credits in Math & Financial Concepts per school year. CLASS SIZE: Shared-Time programs have a typical class size of approximately students per program. RETURNING STUDENT ELIGIBILITY: Students must be in good academic standing, having passed all coursework and been absent no more than 18 times, in order to be eligible to return to UCTECH for a second year. Returning students are asked to make a commitment to attend UCTECH in March of their first year. 4 ALLIED HEALTH In cooperation with the Rutgers University School of Health Related Professions, this program combines in-depth study of the body s systems with basic health care practices. The program gives students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of allied health careers while earning high school and college credits. AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY A nationally recognized National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certified program, students in Auto Technology are exposed to all the major concepts and procedures needed to repair today s automobiles and pass the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Examinations, the most respected certification an auto technician can achieve. CHILD DEVELOPMENT Students enrolled in this program are prepared to become childcare workers in a variety of educational settings. Students complete academic course work as well as hands-on experience in the on-site lab school, Vo-Tykes. COMMERCIAL ART This program offers students the opportunity to link traditional art and design techniques with the new and innovative technology of computer graphics. It offers a solid training foundation for potential commercial artists who primarily create and express a client or employer s needs to a target audience. COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING* This program covers topics related to basic drafting, technical CADD, and architectural design. Utilizing AutoCAD technology and manual drafting techniques, students apply their skills to complete various design tasks. COSMETOLOGY Students enrolled in this program study the art and science of the skin, hair, scalp and nails. Through both lecture and hands-on experiences, students enrolled in the program for three years will have the opportunity to earn the necessary hours of training to sit for the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology Licensing Exam. CRIMINAL JUSTICE Designed to introduce students to the various aspects and occupations associated with law enforcement, corrections, and the criminal justice system, this program uses state-of-the-art equipment and educational learning aids to give students exposure to a wide variety of curriculum components. CULINARY ARTS To meet the needs of the food service industry, this program prepares students to become professional chefs or food preparers. Students are introduced to a variety of preparation techniques from basic principles to gourmet preparations. DIGITAL MULTIMEDIA DESIGN Digital media provides entertainment, information, and multiple opportunities for expression through film, television, the web, mobile devices, photography, and print. Students in this program use the latest multimedia design equipment and software to visually express their ideas through the merging of creativity and technology. ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY Preparing students to enter the industry as an electrical apprentice in a variety of settings. This program teaches residential, commercial, and industrial wiring consistent with the National Electrical Code. GREEN CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY This emerging program is designed to prepare students to enter the construction industry with a variety of marketable skills. An emphasis is placed on eco building that allows for environmentally friendly and energy efficient techniques and applications. INTERACTIVE MEDIA & GAME DESIGN* Students focus on design and development of digital communications media, and video game and App design. Students use computer software and technology to present text, graphics, video, audio, coding and animation in an integrated environment that produces an interactive and engaging media product. *This is a proposed new course for the school year. The availability of the course is not guaranteed. Please keep this in mind when making course selections.
5 Self-Contained Shared-Time Programs at Union County Vocational-Technical High School UCTECH is committed to serving students with special needs. Accordingly, the following programs are dedicated to meeting these needs for students requiring self-contained classroom settings. SCHOOL DAY STRUCTURE: Shared-Time Programs at UCTECH run in both an AM and a PM schedule. The AM session runs from 8:00am to 10:07am; the PM session runs from 12:43pm to 2:50pm. First year students in noncluster programs attend UCTECH in the AM session; returning students in these programs attend in the PM session. Students in cluster programs are eligible to attend in the AM or PM session, regardless of year. Requests for schedule changes are reviewed space permitting. VOCATIONAL CREDIT: UCTECH Shared-Time students receive 10 credits per school year for their vocational program. Grades are delivered form UCTECH to the sending school counselor at the end of each marking period. Students in these programs must have an IEP with selfcontained accommodations for more than 50% of the school day. Programs have a maximum of enrollment of 12 students. CLUSTER PROGRAMS: Clustered programs are designed to give students exposure to related career and vocational paths. Students admitted to self-contained cluster programs will take all courses within that cluster. 6 SELF-CONTAINED PROGRAMS These programs are not offered as part of a cluster. They are two year programs, offered to juniors and seniors only. MEDICAL ASSISTING: For students interested in a health-related career in patient care, this program provides a combination of classroom and clinical instruction where students will learn practical skills necessary for a career in various health care settings, including hospitals, clinics, medical labs, and doctor s offices. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION: This program is designed to prepare students to effectively operate, ensure success, and excel within the global and highly competitive business communities. The curriculum integrates career development with information technology affording students the opportunity of obtaining the skills and confidence for pursuing their chosen occupational aspirations. TRANSPORTATION CLUSTER AUTOMOTIVE COLLISION: This program is designed to teach students the skills needed to gain entry-level employment in the auto repair industry and covers fundamentals including damage repair, preparing a vehicle for painting, metal straightening, panel and glass replacement, and basic welding and detailing. AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY FUNDAMENTALS: Students in this program are prepared for an entry level position in the automotive field. Students learn to diagnose and repair today s automobiles utilizing industry standard preferred systems and equipment. RESTAURANT & FOOD SERVICES CLUSTER BAKING: This program offers the very best in commercial baking training. Students are taught everything from breads to classic desserts to elaborate showpieces and have the opportunity to sell products in the school s own supermarket. CULINARY ARTS: In preparation for a career in the food service industry, this program teaches students the skills necessary for food preparation including basic measurement, cooking techniques, menu planning and customer service. SUPERMARKET TECHNOLOGY: Designed to prepare students for a career in a variety of supermarket occupations, this program utilized academic instruction with hands on training in UCTECH s own fully operational supermarket. In connection with ShopRite, students are trained in the skills necessary to work in the retail food industry CONSTRUCTION CLUSTER BUILDING SERVICES: This program prepares students for an interesting and rewarding career in commercial and industrial maintenance, with an emphasis on general repairs. Students participate in school repair projects to gain hands-on experience. MASONRY: This program introduces students to the concepts of concrete, stone, block, and brick construction. Students are able to gain experience by participating in construction projects in-shop. WELDING TECHNOLOGY: Students in this program are instructed in the concepts of joining metal through a variety of welding techniques. With an emphasis on safety, theory, and practice, this course covers the permanent bond formed when heat is applied to metal pieces to join, melt, and fuse them. COMPUTER & VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS CLUSTER COMMERCIAL ART: This program covers the basic elements and principles of design, advertising techniques, hand-drawing techniques, and desktop publishing. In addition to the development of a portfolio, students have the opportunity to showcase their designs in art-related competitions. COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN*: Students cover topics related to basic drafting, technical CAD, and architectural design. The program utilizes AutoCAD technology and manual drafting. GRAPHIC DESIGN: Students in this program utilize Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign to achieve mastery of image creation, manipulation/retouching of photos, and a skilled use of typography. *This is a proposed new course for the school year.
