1 For More Information Contact: American Indian Summer Institute in Earth System Science July 10 - July 23 The American Indian Summer Institute in Earth System Science is a free two-week residential summer program for Native high school students, entering grades 9-12 in fall Participants will conduct field research and camp out on the La Jolla Indian Reservation, then travel back to the beautiful UC Irvine campus. 2 AMERICAN INDIAN SUMMER INSTITUTE IN EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE RESIDENT ASSISTANT APPLICATION Thank you for your interest the 2016 UCI American Indian Summer Institute. We believe in developing holistic, self-determined students and feel there is a major need for sensitive and culturally appropriate programming. This philosophy aspires to develop self-reliance, self-esteem, and self-determination within students so that they become more critical and build leadership within their respective communities. The American Indian Summer Institute in Earth System Science (AISIESS) is a two-week summer residential program where students will work with professors, college students, and invited American Indian community members to understand technical and traditional approaches to solving tribal environmental issues. The first week will be spent camping on the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians Reservation, learning about Earth System Science with UCI professors. The second week will be spent in the UCI campus dormitories, learning about the university environment, study skills, and academic preparation. The students will also design a presentation utilizing skills learned throughout the program. In the afternoons, they will engage in cultural workshops, social activities, and field trips. The program will end with a symposium where students will present their work as well as an accompanying awards ceremony. After the program, all participants will receive follow-up mentorship by UCI staff and students throughout their remaining years of high school, which will include guidance in choosing their coursework, financial aid, and applying to universities.
