5 6 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (OUTCOME-BASED) 7 CODE STUDY MODE FULL-TIME DURATION 3 YEARS OR 4 YEARS CREDIT 15 CREDITS (for 3 years) FEE HK$42,100 (annual registration fee) 22 CREDITS (for 4 years) TYPE OF FUNDING GOVERNMENT-FUNDED CHAIRMAN OF RESEARCH POSTGRADUATE COMMITTEE PROF. HU HONG AIMS The programme aims to provide rigorous training to students who aspire to become researchers or scholars with the capability to conduct independent and original research, and produce research findings that are relevant and significant to their chosen field of specialisation. CHARACTERISTICS Supervisors who hold an academic position supervise research students on an individual basis. Research students are obliged to complete the core and elective subjects and participate in research seminars that are organised by ITC or the University. STRUCTURE Students are required to complete the coursework/ meet the credit requirements prior to thesis submission. COMPULSORY SUBJECT Ethics: Research, Professional & Personal Perspectives ELECTIVE SUBJECTS Guided study subjects and/or taught subjects for research students. ENTRANCE Candidates shall normally hold a postgraduate degree with a significant research component, such as a dissertation, conferred by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University or a recognised university. ENGLISH LANGUAGE A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the internet-based test (with a writing score of 23 or above) or 550 or above for the paper-based test (with a score of at least 4 out of 6 in the Test of Written English); or An overall Band Score of at least 6.5 (with a score of 6 or above for the writing component) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). APPLICATION METHOD Applications can be submitted online at edu.hk/eadmission/index.jsf. NON-LOCAL APPLICANTS For non-local applicants who are only on a visitor or tourist visa, PolyU can neither register the applicants as a student nor allow the applicants to commence study until a student visa is obtained. Non-local students are not eligible for government grants and loans. They should therefore ensure that they have sufficient funds for tuition fees, accommodations and other expenses, including medical insurance. OTHER INFORMATION ACCOMMODATIONS Full-time students within the normal study period are eligible for one year of residence in the University-managed accommodations (including the Student Halls of Residence and off-campus housing), subject to availability. They can make alternative accommodation arrangements if necessary. PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT Full-time students who are receiving a studentship are not permitted to take up any employment with the University or any other employer, or engage in other activities that prevent them from devoting full-time effort to their programme of study unless special approval is granted.

7 10 MASTER OF ARTS IN FASHION AND TEXTILE DESIGN 11 CODE STUDY MODE FULL-TIME DURATION 1 YEAR CREDIT 30 CREDITS TYPE OF FUNDING SELF-FINANCED FEE HK$3,300 per credit for local students HK$4,000 per credit for non-local students DIRECTOR MS BASIA SZKUTNICKA AIMS We aim to produce creative, forward thinking designers who will develop their personal design identity, bringing a new perspective and offer to fashion through design conceptualization and creative application and informed decision-making skills. The Programme is innovative, contemporary and aims to respond intuitively to the demands of a vibrant global fashion landscape. Close relationships and interaction with industry will provide an insight into the workplace and exciting career development opportunities for graduates. The study is intensive, fast paced, with sustainability firmly embedded at the core, within a design focused environment. The Programme fosters an analytical, critical and futuristic approach to learning, encouraging independent research and artistic expression. This MA will act as a platform to launch unique designers, with a sound understanding of the fashion business environment, into the fashion world. We aim to deliver highly sought after, ambitious design professionals. We aim to teach the future. CHARACTERISTICS Throughout their study, students will be encouraged to develop independent learning skills and exchange ideas through guided experimentation. There will be the opportunity to work in groups on a real life industry project, as well as develop a final major project while engaging in research and design in studio practice. Guest speakers and industry visits will be arranged where appropriate and students will be encouraged to seek industry mentors and sponsors. Students will learn to appreciate the demands placed on designers in this dynamic industry, and explore issues related to design practice, technology and theory. They will continuously receive updated information and improve their knowledge of innovative, relevant technologies in an integrated design context. Students are encouraged to have a sense of self-direction in research and investigation work as well as develop relevant transferable skills.

8 12 13 STRUCTURE Students may select one of 4 specialist subject routes from the following: Fashion Design Textile Design Knitwear Design Bodywear Design Over two semesters, aspects of design thinking, prediction, aesthetics, 3D realization, consumer behavior, visual communication, industry practice, textile experimentation and technological innovation will be examined. Students will also enhance existing knowledge and support individual assignment work through research and practice. Students are required to take all of the following subjects in order to graduate from the Programme: 3-CREDIT SUBJECTS Creative Textiles Design Collection Preparation Design Concept Evolution of Design Trends Fashion Business Fashion Technology Visual Design Communication 9-CREDIT PROJECT The personal Project includes a written research report, individual design portfolio and a collection. ENTRANCE A Bachelor s degree in textiles or fashion design, or equivalent. Applicants who hold Bachelor s degree in other fields of study and have adequate and relevant work experience in the fashion or textile industry may be considered for admission. ENGLISH LANGUAGE Applicants who are not native speakers of English, and whose Bachelor s degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, are expected to fulfil the following minimum English language requirements for admission purpose: A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the internet-based test or 550 or above for the paper-based test; or An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). 9 14 MASTER OF ARTS IN FASHION AND TEXTILES (FASHION MERCHANDISING) 15 CODE STUDY MODE FULL-TIME (BLOCK RELEASE) DURATION 1.5 YEARS CREDIT 33 CREDITS TYPE OF FUNDING SELF-FINANCED FEE RMB 3,000 per credit DIRECTOR DR KINOR JIANG AIMS The programme aims to provide highly motivated and committed students with the opportunity to pursue advanced-level (deepening) postgraduate education in Fashion and Textiles and related knowledge areas, which are not attainable at the first degree level. CHARACTERISTICS This programme is offered in conjunction with the Xi an Polytechnic University in Xi an, China. STRUCTURE All students will start with three subjects in the first semester. For the remaining semesters, students are required to take eight subjects. ALTERNATIVE ENTRANCE Higher diploma holders or degree holders who only hold academic credentials or a degree certificate must have 3 years of work experience in the fashion and textile industry, or a relevant field. These applications will be subject to approval. CHARACTERISTICS There are two specialisms, which have their own distinct aims and learning outcomes. FASHION MERCHANDISING Upon the satisfactory completion of the Fashion Merchandising specialism, students will be able to: GLOBAL FASHION MANAGEMENT Upon satisfactory completion of the Global Fashion Management specialism, students will be able to: demonstrate a thorough understanding of the current globalising fashion business environment, particularly in the areas of design, production, marketing and management; apply analytical, integrative and proactive approaches where which is the building block and defined in terms of student study time and effort. The total effort required of a student on a three-credit subject is about 140 student hours of effort. It is recommended that employed students enrol in two subjects for each semester. However, the pace of study can be an individual decision. All of the subjects are normally offered during the day for full-time students, and in the evening for part-time students. A standard subject is delivered in twelve to

12 20 21 thirteen classes in each semester. Each class is three hours in length. In general, it is recommended that students complete the programme in 1 year (full-time Fashion Merchandising), 1.5 years (full-time Global Fashion Management), or 2 years (part-time). The maximum length of registration for all students is 4 years.
