2 SCIENCE CURRICULUM GEORGIA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR SCIENCE The current science standards are posted in the GeorgiaStandards.org website. There are not Common Core Standards for Science Science Assessments are not changing at this time and will not change until the science standards are changed The Common Core Standards for Literacy in Science should substitute the original reading and writing standard included in the current science performance standards.

3 SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION All students that started high school on the school year are required to have four units of science to graduate 1 unit of Biology I ( ) 1 unit of Physical Science ( ) or Physics ( ) 1 unit of Chemistry ( ) or Earth Systems ( ) or Environmental Science ( ), or an AP/IB course. 1 unit of an additional science from the List of State Funded Courses and K-8 Subjects Rule (IDA3).

4 Fourth Science Options The following courses count towards satisfying the fourth science requirement and a CTAE pathway completion requirement and have been approved by the Board of Regents as a fourth science. 7 Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) TENTATIVE TIMELINE! The National Science Framework was released on July 17, The first Public Draft of the NGSS was released in May The second Public Draft of the NGSS is scheduled to be released in early January Expected completion of the New Generation Science Standards by Achieve is April, Precision review of the Science GPS will be conducted in the Summer-Fall of Tentative date to submit the new Science GPS for adoption by the Georgia Board of Education is in the Fall of Professional Development for teachers on the revised Science GPS will be conducted in the and school years. First year of implementation of the revised Science GPS will be in the school year. Assessments will be aligned accordingly at this time. 12/10/2012 7

8 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching (PAESMT) The PAESMT is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12 th grade science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Why Apply A citation signed by the President of the United States. A paid trip to Washington, DC to attend a series of recognitions events and professional development opportunities A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. Who is Eligible 7 th through 12 th science teachers

9 Mathematics-Science Partnerships (MSP) The MSP program strives to improve teacher quality through partnerships between state education agencies, institutions of higher education, high-need local education agencies, and schools. The MSP program is a formula grant program to the states, with the size of individual state awards based on student population and poverty rates. The main objective of the program is to increase the academic achievement of students in mathematics and science.
