4 2017 RBEF HS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Location: Redondo Union High School One Sea Hawk Way, Redondo Beach, CA High School Program Design and Registration High school classes are offered for enrichment (designed for students wishing to accelerate their schedule), credit recovery (designed for students who fail required classes and must make up credits needed for graduation), and grade improvement (for students who received a grade lower than a "C" in a particular class and would like to improve their grade point average). Most classes meet UC "A-G" requirements (see notations) for college entrance, and unless otherwise stated, are offered as two semester or "yearlong" classes. Upon successful completion of class offered for credit, students enrolled in two semester or "yearlong" classes receive 10 credits toward graduation and students enrolled in one semester long classes will receive 5 credits toward graduation. Students taking courses for acceleration must enroll in both semesters of that class. It is the intention of the RBEF to present a comprehensive list of classes to meet the academic needs of all students. UC/CSU Approved The RBEF is offering many classes that meet UC/CSU "A-G" admission requirements. Classes designated as meeting UC requirements are so noted under the course description section of each course. Students taking a class for "credit" can check with their school counselors to be sure that the class meets their graduation requirements. Grade improvement Classes RBEF's summer program is an accelerated program, yet students may also use it for improving a grade. Any student receiving a "D" or "F" during the school year may take that same course offered by RBEF, for a grade improvement. Any student receiving a "C" or higher in any high school class may NOT retake a class for grade improvement. Course Fees $275 for 1 semester (5 credits), $550 for 2 semesters (10 credits) Final Exams No early finals will be given for Classroom Only courses. Homework Policy Homework should be purposeful and related to the subject studied. Nightly homework requirements vary among classes and teachers. If an instructor does not provide a specific assignment, it is expected that students read, study, and review for the class each night. Requesting an Official Transcript All students will be mailed an RBEF report card. This report card will serve as an official transcript with most schools. If necessary, students may request an official transcript by contacting Marvin Brown, RBEF Summer Sessions Principal at mbrown@rbusd.org. After requesting a transcript, please allow at least 3 weeks for delivery upon completion of summer school. 4 P age

5 ONLINE CLASSES Students enrolled in online classes will require access to the internet and will need to install a desktop application called Cyber High to access courses. All work except unit exams may be completed at home. Students may also work at school in a monitored lab setting during open lab times. Unit exams require proctoring by summer school staff at RUHS. The last day to complete exams is Friday July 30 th. Students can work at their own pace. It is possible to complete courses early or take up to six weeks to complete a single class. Students are limited to enrollment in two courses at one time, if a student completes a class early, they may enroll (for an additional fee) in another online course. There is no limit to the number of online students allowed to enroll. Students enrolling in online courses will be expected to attend an orientation/training meeting at Redondo Union High School. Note: Students sign up for orientation at when registering for a class. Grade Improvement/Credit Recovery Students enrolling in a class for the purpose of grade improvement or credit recovery must indicate on the registration form the semester(s) they intend to repeat. A student may enroll in a single semester of a yearlong class if that semester is needed for grade improvement or credit recovery. The semester being taken for grade improvement or credit recovery must be clearly indicated on the registration form in the "Special Instructions" section. Out of District Students Students attending RBEF Summer Sessions that attend schools outside of RBUSD are responsible for verifying with their home high school that units acquired through RBEF Summer Sessions are transferable. NCAA Eligibility Classroom courses do meet NCAA eligibility. Online courses do not meet NCAA eligibility. More information on NCAA eligibility can be found at: SUMMER SESSION COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ENGLISH English 12A and/or 12B 1 or 2 Semester Class ON-LINE Grade 12 (post graduating seniors) Online Only Students will read and study core and extended works covering both British and World Literature. A variety of writing is also expected, including a culminating senior project. Prerequisite: English 11 Grade Improvement Only Meets UC/CSU B Requirement for A-G Writing Composition 1 Semester ON-LINE Grades 9-12 Online Only Writing Composition is a course designed to introduce high school students to the key components of effective written communication. The course will focus on various objectives relating to writing composition including a review of grammar and mechanics, writing effective sentences and paragraphs, the Writing Process, development, rhetorical reading and writing and composing several types of essays. Meets UC/CSU G Requirement for A-G Grammar through Literature A and/or B 2 Semester ON-LINE Grades 9-12 Online Only This course has an experimental, literature-rich focus allowing students to develop their writing skills and styles. Students will practice a variety of writing styles and be able to write with fluency and effectiveness while expressing themselves. Meets elective requirement 5 P age

6 FOREIGN LANGUAGES Spanish 2 A and/or B 1 Semester Class Grades 9-12 Classroom Only This course continues to build on the basic principles of the Spanish language. The language used is authentic and current, reflecting the language spoken and read in a Spanish speaking society. Instruction is student centered and communication based. Prerequisite: Spanish 1A or equivalent Grade Improvement, Credit Recovery or Advancement Meets UC/CSU E requirement for A-G Spanish 3 A and/or B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades 9-12 Classroom Only This course offers students who have successfully completed Spanish 2 or the equivalent the opportunity to continue the study of the Spanish language and culture. The student is provided with communicative experiences in the target language necessary to inform, inquire after and give information in more complex situational contexts. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 2 Grade Improvement, Credit Recovery or Advancement Meets UC/CSU E requirement for A-G Note: Not recommended for advancement if student plans to pursue AP Spanish in high school HISTORY (Social Science) Modern World History A and/or B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grade Classroom Only In this class, students examine major turning points in the shaping of the modern world, from the late eighteenth century to the present. The year begins with a focus on study skills, including methodology used at the high school level. It continues with a connecting phase to the rise of democratic ideals and reviews past learning (ancient civilization, Middle Ages, etc.) The major thrust of the course, however, is world history, culture and geography from 1789 to the present (with emphasis on the 20th century). Close attention will be paid to the expansion of the west and the growing interdependence of people and cultures throughout the world. Grade Improvement, Credit Recovery or Advancement Note: Not recommended for advancement if student plans to pursue AP History courses in high school Meets UC/CSU A requirement for A-G U.S. History A and/or B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grade Classroom Only The class begins with a linking phase to review past learning (i.e. American Revolution, Constitution, Civil War, and Reconstruction). The major thrust of the course, however, begins with the Progressive era at the turn of the twentieth century. It will focus on the changing role of the United States in the global community, on the impact the twentieth century had upon American institutions and attitudes as well as the impact of the United State's growth as a super power in the world. The study of the twentieth century includes an integration of history and geography, literature, and cultural diversity. Grade Improvement, Credit Recovery or Advancement Note: Not recommended for advancement if student plans to pursue AP History courses in high school Meets UC/CSU A requirement for A-G Ethnic Studies 1 Semester Class ON-LINE Grade 9-12 Online Only Ethnic Studies is an elective course that provides information that addresses the History/Social Studies Content Area. Ethnic Studies address the specific contributions from cultures over a variety of times periods and geographic locations. Students will also be able to explain their varied economies and systems of government and relate them to present day situations and events. Meets elective requirement Sociology 1 Semester Class ON-LINE Grade 9-12 Online Only This course will help you develop a sociological imagination (i.e. perspective), a unique way of interpreting human behavior and provide you with the fundamental principles, concepts and tools so that you will better understand your own life and the world we live in. You will learn the special perspective which sociologists use to describe and explain why we behave the way we do. Since Sociology is a scientific discipline which depends on facts rather than guesses you will learn how to test ideas experimentally. Meets elective requirement 6 P age

7 MATHEMATICS Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades Classroom Only Yearlong course Pre-calculus emphasizes the study of functions and their graphs, including polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions. Trigonometry pertains to the study of trigonometric functions, their use in the solution of right and oblique triangles, and general theory of trigonometric relations. The TI-83/TI-84 graphing calculator will be used extensively in this course. Session A is a full semester of Pre-Calculus and Session B is a full semester of Trigonometry. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 2 Grade Improvement, Credit recovery or Advancement Meets UC/CSU C requirement for A-G Note: Not recommended for advancement if student plans to pursue AP Math courses in high school. SCIENCE Chemistry A and/or B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades Classroom Only Chemistry, a physical science, is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking by using the scientific method and laboratory activities. The course is designed to prepare the student for an introductory college chemistry course. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Geometry ($40 Lab Fee) Grade Improvement, Credit recovery or Advancement Meets UC/CSU C requirement for A-G Note: Not recommended for advancement if student plans to pursue AP Science courses in high school. Other qualifications apply if taking for advancement. Please see flyer on page 3. Physiology A and/or B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades Classroom Only Physiology is a lab science that deals with the function of the human body. The course content is organized according to levels of increasing complexity, with emphasis on the complimentary nature of body structure and function, homeostatic regulating mechanism, and important metabolic processes. This course involves dissection of lab specimens. Grade improvement, Credit recovery or Advancement Meets UC/CSU D Requirement for A-G Prerequisite: Successful completion of Biology Year long course Health 1 Semester ON-LINE Grades 9-12 Online Only This class is designed to help students understand and develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors that are critical to healthy living. This course includes possible guest speakers for various topics concerning teenage health. Grade Improvement, Credit Recovery or Advancement, High School Graduation Requirement PHYSICAL EDUCATION PE A and/or B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades Classroom Only The Physical Education Program is designed to teach students about all aspects of physical fitness. Through classroom instruction and activity assignments, they learn about the importance of fitness to the body, what makes someone fit and how to achieve fitness through training principles. Other topics include nutrition and weight control, fad diets, goal setting and stress reduction. Students will participate in eight different sport activities designed to teach them lifelong skills to maintain health/fitness levels. Grade improvement, Credit Recovery, or for Advancement VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS Art 1 A and B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades 9-12 Classroom Only This course is an introductory one-year course for beginning art students. It is a sequential program that instills basic fundamentals so that the student may produce and appreciate fine art. Students will have the opportunity to create works in various mediums. 8 Art 2 A and B 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades 9-12 Classroom Only This course is a yearlong continuation of Art 1.The students will be introduced to a more in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of art, working with various media. ($20 Materials Fee) Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1 Meets UC/CSU F requirement for A-G Grade Improvement, Credit Recovery, or Advancement CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION Intro to Broadcasting 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades Classroom Only Introduction to Broadcasting focuses on Video Production and the analysis and practice of newsgathering, production and presentation from a variety of theoretical, philosophical, artistic and historical perspectives. Students will gain a richer understanding of the ideals, limitations, rituals, and routines of the American news media, all while gaining practical experience as television journalists. They will use this form of production to make personal works of art that include the seven principles of design. This course will also focus on the elements of design (color, lines, shapes, tones, textures, and volume). Prerequisite: Teacher Approval Meets UC/CSU G requirement for A-G Grade Improvement, Credit Recovery, or Advancement Media Arts 1 or 2 Semester Class Grades 9-12 Classroom Only The Media Arts program focuses on digital design with an emphasis on graphic design and filmmaking. Lessons in theory, criticism, and practice are emphasized. Students explore their own artistic abilities and gain a comprehensive understanding of design in print, digital imaging, and digital video creation. 9 2017 RBEF Summer Sessions Online Course Information Dear Students and Parents, Thank you for enrolling in an online course through the RBEF Summer Sessions Program!! All online courses will require access to the internet and students will need to install a desktop application called Cyber High to access courses. Instruction on this will be given. Each course through Cyber High is a semester long and requires a fee of $275 due at enrollment time. COURSE INFORMATION Students should work on courses at their own pace. The online courses can be completed anytime during the entire 6-week summer session. The course does not need to be completed during the semester A or B timeframe. It is possible to complete a course in as little as two weeks but may take up to six weeks to complete a single class depending on the pace of the students work. Students are limited to enrollment in two courses at one time. Each course is comprised of a total of 5 units, which include reading material, writing assignments, multiple choice quizzes and a final exam. Each online student will have to take 5 final exams, 1 after each unit. All work except unit final exams may be completed at home. Students may also work at school in a monitored lab setting during open lab times. Open lab times will be provided to students at the online course orientation meeting. Unit exams require proctoring by summer school staff at RUHS. The last day to complete exams is Thursday July 28 th. Once a course is complete, the registrar will ensure that proper credits be applied to a student s transcript at their home school. ONLINE COURSE ORIENTATION Students enrolling in online courses will be expected to attend an orientation/training meeting before they begin their online coursework. At orientation, students will be given a syllabus outlining expectations, computer lab hours, login information and how to complete their coursework and final exams. 10 2017 RBEF Summer Sessions General Information Make-Up Exams If you miss an exam or required coursework during a summer session because of absence, you may make up the exam and assignments within one day of returning to school. Note arrangements to complete make-up work are the responsibility of the student and must be made directly with the teacher. Drop/Withdrawal from class If you wish to drop/withdraw from a class, you must secure a Withdrawal from the Summer Sessions Administrator in the office of the school site. You must meet the drop and/or withdrawal deadline to receive no academic consequences on your transcripts. A failure to follow the proper procedure will result in an F for the course. All tuition and fees are forfeited. Students will be held financially responsible for unreturned textbooks. There will be a $50 handling fee, plus the cost of the replacement for each textbook unreturned. Credit Each semester course is equivalent to (5) high school credits. Successful completion of a yearlong course earns a student (10) high school credits. Most courses count toward students A-G requirements. For specific information about A-G credits, please see the RBEF Summer Session Course Description page. Grade Reports Final grades will automatically be sent to your home school, as designated on your application, for placement on your permanent high school record. Any discrepancies must be reported to your school site administrator immediately. Classes cannot be taken on a Pass/Fail basis. Registration Online registration for all classes will begin on February 8 th. Registration will end on June 27 th for Session A classroom courses and on July 17 th for Session B classroom courses. Registration will end on July 17 th for all online courses. Attendance Students are allowed one absence per session. On the 2 nd absence a student will be dropped from their class and will not receive a refund. No grade will be given if this happens. Financial Aid RBEF does not offer scholarships or financial aid. 10 P age

13 Refund Policy: If you wish to drop or withdraw from a course after registering and want to receive 100% refund, it must be done in writing and ed to Kristen@rbef.org, RBEF Executive Director, by June 16 th, Your request to cancel must be received before then to receive a full refund. No refunds, under any circumstances, will be issued after June 16th, Refunds will be processed within a 4-6 week period after receiving proper notice. In the event that RBEF cancels a course, all tuition and lab fees will be refunded 100%. Dismissal and Code of Conduct: Dismissal from the RBEF Summer Sessions occurs when your student has violated the attendance or disciplinary rules and codes of our district RBUSD.
