1 Graduate School of Admission Requirements for International Students Categories of International Students International students at Doshisha University are divided into two categories, regular and special students. [Regular Students] Regular students are those who expect to complete the designated graduated curricula of the university. Regular students are accepted in April in principle. [Special Students] Special students are those who either enroll to fulfill requirements for particular courses in master s programs, or seek a professor for directed research in a doctoral program. The following points must be kept in consideration: (1)Special students are accepted in April in principle. (2)The length of enrollment for special students is one year in principle. (3)As a general rule, special students can register for courses up to 20 credits in one academic year. The university will designate a faculty advisor for each student so that they may be directed toward their desired goals. (4)The credits of completed courses as special students may be accepted for the regular course. (5)Upon completing required examinations, special students may be issued certificates of completion for courses taken. Note: Special considerations may be made for those who wish to apply for a status of special students with the selection process not complying with this Admissions Guide. Please refer to Others for details. Qualifications for Applicants, Time for Application, Application Procedure and Initial Registration Procedures are, unless otherwise specified, applied to special students as well as to regular students. Admission to special student will be decided solely on the basis of the application documents. The American Cluster and the Society Cluster enable students to obtain a degree by taking classes taught in English

2 Graduate School of Ⅰ.Qualifications for Applicants 1. Master s Degree Program: Those who are not Japanese citizens and who satisfy one of the following qualifications are eligible: (1) Those who have a transcript attesting to the equivalent of 16 years of education outside Japan or expect to have one before the end of March, (2) Those who have graduated from a college in Japan as a foreign student or who expect to graduate before the end of March, (3) Those who have a transcript attesting to the equivalent of 15 years of education outside Japan and are recognized by the Graduate School of as achieving a high level of academic excellence. (4) In addition to the categories described above, students who are recognized by the Graduate School of as possessing the required qualification will be considered for admission. 2. Doctoral Degree Program: Those who are not Japanese citizens and who satisfy one of the following qualifications are eligible: (1) Those who have certification for a master s degree from an institution outside Japan or expect to receive it before the end of March, (2) Those who have certification for a master s degree from an institution in Japan as a foreign student or expect to receive it before the end of March, (3) In addition to the categories described above, students who are recognized by the Graduate School of as possessing the required qualification will be considered for admission. Note 1 : An appropriate level of knowledge in Japanese, written and spoken, is expected, as some of the lectures at the Graduate School of are conducted in Japanese. 2 : Prior to application, those who qualify to apply under sections 1. (3)(4) and 2. (3)[see above] should consult the Graduate School of (Karasuma Campus) before the deadline below for the certificate of qualifications. Those who are already residing in Japan and wish to take the entrance examination on September 22, 2013 should consult the Graduate School of by Friday, July 26, Those who are already residing in Japan and wish to take the entrance examination on February 23, 2014 should consult the Graduate School of by Wednesday, January 8, Those who are residing abroad should consult the Graduate School of by Friday, July 26, : Applicants should consult the Section for International Admissions, the Office of International Students, the International Center (Imadegawa Campus), prior to application, for any questions concerning the qualifications. 4 : Admission will be denied if the applicant who passes the entrance examination does not meet the application requirements by the end of March Ⅱ.Number of Students Admitted The number of students admitted will be limited in both the Master s and Doctoral Programs

The essay must be typed, double-spaced (if written in English) and should include the four sections described below. Master s Program Section(1) Your academic objectives and research proposal for this program. Section(2) Your academic background and previous academic accomplishments Section(3) Reasons for applying to this program Section(4) Your career plans after completing this program Section(1) should be approximately 2,000 characters long in Japanese, or approximately 500 words in English, and should include [1] the title of the research, [2] an outline of your research project, [3] the method of study and [4] the name of professor with whom you wish to work. Those who write Section (1) in Japanese must submit an English summary of no less than 250 words on one A4-size paper and include the title at the top. Section(2) should be either in Japanese or English. There is no limit on the number of words. Section(3) and Section (4) should each be approximately 200 characters long in Japanese, or approximately 50 words each in English. 6 Plan for Study at Doshisha University Doctoral Program Section(1) Your academic objectives and research proposal for this program. Section(2) Your academic background and previous academic accomplishments Section(3) Reasons for applying to this program Section(4) Your career plans after completing this program Section(1) should be approximately 5,000 10,000 characters long in Japanese, or approximately 1,250 2,500 words in English, and should include [1] the title of the research, [2] the name of the professor with whom you wish to work, [3] an evaluation of related study in the field, [4] the objective, method, content, and originality of your research project, and [5] brief bibliography. Applicants are strongly recommended to contact in advance a professor they wish to work with. Those who write Section (1) in Japanese must submit an English summary of no less than 250 words on one A4-size paper and include the title at the top. Section(2) should be either in Japanese or English. There is no limit on the number of words. If you do not have any certificate proving your English ability, contact the office of the Graduate School of by August 9, 2013 for fall 2013 application or by January 17, 2014 for spring 2014 application. Those who have the certificate of graduation or graduation letter from a college in a country where English is the official language are exempted from the submission of TOEFL or TOEIC score. 9 Certificate of Registered Items on Resident Register, a Copy of Resident Card (or Alien Registration Card), or a Copy of Passport Applicants residing in Japan Any one of the following 1 to 3: 1 Cer tificate of Items Stated in Resident Register: must include nationality, status of residence, period of stay and date of expiration 2 Resident Card or Alien Registration Card: submit copies of both front and back of the card, in A4 size 3 Passport: submit a copy of the page, in A4 size, which includes your photograph, name, status of residence and period of stay Applicants residing abroad Either of the following 1 or 2: 1 Passport: submit a copy of the page, in A4 size, which includes your photograph and name. 2 If you do not have a passport, a copy of an official government-issued ID must be submitted. 10 Examination admission card (prescribed form) Please fill out the examination admission card. After receipt of the completed documents, an examination admission card with examinee s number printed on it will be sent to you. 11 A photo identification card (prescribed form) Affix photograph in space provided on photo identification card. (Photograph should have been taken within 3 months prior to application and should be 3cm L 2.4cm W, clearly displaying a frontal, hatless view of the upper part of the body. Be sure to write your name and birth date on the back of the photograph.) When your admission is permitted, the photograph will be used for your student ID card, etc. 12 Proof of Payment of Application Fee Remittance from inside Japan The receipt of the remittance of the application fee bearing the authorization of the remittance bank must be pasted onto the prescribed pasteboard for the receipt of the remittance. Remittance from outside Japan In case of remittance at a bank, please submit a copy (A4-size) of the receipt of the remittance bearing the authorization of your remittance bank. In case of a remittance by credit card, please submit a copy (A4-size) of the remittance Result page. 13 Mailing label (prescribed form) Please write your name and mailing address to receive information about examination and your examination result. 14 List of Required Documents (this form) Please confirm that you have all the application forms required, and send your application with the list of Required Documents. * For applicants to the Master s Degree Program already residing in Japan. If you have any of the qualifications listed in page 209 and wish to be exempted from English examination, submit the certificate with the application

7 Ⅳ.Selection Process 1. Applicants to regular students already residing in Japan (1) The selection is made based on a comprehensive consideration of the application forms and the results of written and oral examinations. (2) After the university receives their application forms, applicants will be notified of the place and time of the written and oral examinations. (3) Numbered exam admission cards will be shipped around September 13, 2013 for fall 2013 application or February 14, 2014 for spring 2014 application after confirmation that the applicant is qualified to apply. If you do not receive an admission card by September 17, 2013 for fall 2013 application or by February 18, 2014 for spring 2014 application, contact the office of the Graduate School of. (4) The examination will be conducted at the Karasuma Campus of Doshisha University. The essay examination question will be in English and you may write your answer in either Japanese or English. (2)Oral examinations will be conducted in Japanese or in English. You may bring a paper dictionary, but an electronic dictionary will not be permitted. Chinese : Essay question will be in Chinese, and you may write in Japanese or in English. Korean : Essay question will be in Korean, and you may write either in Japanese or in English. Japanese : Essay question will be either in Japanese or in English, and you may write either in Japanese or in English. Southeast Asian : Essay question will be in English, and you may write either in Japanese or in English

Note for all applicants 1 : Applicants must be present and seated in the examination room at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the examination. 2 : Those who have arrived more than 15 minutes late for the examination are not permitted to take the examination. 3 : You may bring a paper dictionary for the English test, but an electronic dictionary will not be permitted. 2. Exemption from English examination If applicants for the Master s Degree Program have qualified in any of the categories listed below, they will be exempted from taking the English qualifying test. The original of the score or graduation certificates must be submitted with the application. TOEFL-ITP (Institutional Testing Program) and TOEIC-IP (Institutional Program) will not be considered a qualification to exempt from English examination. American Cluster (a) 88 or higher on the TOEFL (internet-based test) TOEFL PBT scores will be converted to TOEFL ibt scores based on the ETS conversion table. (b) 790 or higher on the TOEIC (c) Special A grade certificate of the United Nations Association s Test of English (d) 1st grade certificate of EIKEN test in Practical English Proficiency (e) Certificate of graduation or expected graduation from a college in a country where English is the official language Contemporary Asian Cluster, Society Cluster (a) 79 or higher on the TOEFL (internet-based test) TOEFL PBT scores will be converted to TOEFL ibt scores based on the ETS conversion table.
